After a recent visit to Camping Maka, we cannot wait to go back! The facilities were functional and cleaned regularly, the shop and restaurant were run fabulously (the frites were delicious!), but the outstanding feature was the setting.
We were on an electric pitch with only an access road and a picnic table between us and the river Semois. Slowly meandering past our tent it was so peaceful that we had to drag ourselves away from the peace to go on stunning walks through the forest, or visit the beautiful town of Bouillon with the imposing castle and the driver running through it.
Our 7 year old daughter soon made friends on this companionable campsite and we ended up toasting marshmallows round a campfire with 3 different nationality families in the evenings! Log-fetching-duty has never been such fun! With plenty of activities/playground/rope walks/zip wires to keep our daughter occupied, a fantastic time was had by all!
How soon can we return. ?

Great campsite - have just got back from a weekend camping there recommended by a friend who goes regularly. Brilliant setting and very pretty. Shower block very clean and well maintained. The children loved the wood play area and we loved the peacefulness and relaxation of the site. All was well maintained and reception was good. We had a lovely weekend. We had a great day out in Bouillion - lovely castle and just perfect for our kids - imaginations running wild in dungeons and loved the birds of prey show. Husband commented you could just pack the tent/ caravan etc and just rock up - the shop/ restaurant/ setting would supply the rest and you could have a great weekend

You could not wish for a more beautifully located site than Camping Maka.
The spotless facilities, the friendly owners the wealth of sight seeing within an easy drive and birdsong from dawn to dusk.
We enjoyed 8 nights on site at the end of May, the children were never bored for a minute and made the most of the site and all the activities.
We would recommend the Canadian Kayak hire and the 11km of superb scenery as you gently paddle down La Semois River back to the camp site.
In the evenings we enjoyed open fires by the river whilst watching a Beaver gather grass and weeds to take back to its lodge on the opposite bank.
Water, waste disposal and hookups were very conveniently located and it is obvious that the owners take great pride in looking after the site.
The on site bar and restaurant served very reasonably priced tasty meals with local Belgian beer on draught.
We will be visiting again next year!

We booked our 7 night stay after reading other ukcampsite reviews and the website of Camping Maka. We loved this site, you could not find a more beautiful spot.
All facilities are kept lovely and clean and well maintained. The rivers, surrounding country side and towns offer lots of activities and outings.
When we visited there seemed to be mostly Dutch families camping around us which is certainly no problem, as they all spoke good english and even our 6 year old son made friends for the duration of our stay.
The campfires in the evening, the river just outside our pitch and the freedom of the kids to explore the river and surrounding woods safely made this an experience much more in touch with nature and relaxed than we have experienced before.
The owners are very friendly and helpful and seem to work non-stop to make everyone comfortable. The food served in the bar is great, and sitting out on the terrace in the evening, having a meal and a drink turns this camping experience into glamping!
We went canoeing, rail biking, to the Euro Space Centre, the castle in Bouillion and the wildlife park, all short drives away and great fun.

We loved this site. We were in the non-electric part in our tent and this suited us. There is a lovely atmosphere at Maka.
Kids can run about, play in the river, toast sausages and marshmallows over open fires, and people just get on with the business of camping.
We rented a Weber bbq from the office and also partook of their fresh bread and croissants ordering system.
The toilet block was clean and efficient, though you had to remember to take your own toilet roll/towels/soap as this was not provided, but didn't seem to cause any problems.
Bertrix is the nearest town (9km )for shopping (Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi) but Bouillon (10km) was a lovely day out, very pretty if a bit touristy.
The owners kindly gave us free hiking maps which we really appreciated. I would definitely return to this site.

Probably the best chance booking we have ever made. Spent one night there and have just booked for next weekend and the end of July.
It's nothing fancy just pure Heaven.
Staff are friendly, campers are friendly, facilities gleam, calm and the kids just can't wait to go back. This one is going to be regular. Oh, and the Beer and food a great also.
Just think, BBQ going, Beer in the hand and the river meandering by. Brilliant.
It's also very safe for the kids. The river is shallow and our 5&6 year olds had no trouble wading and swimming around. With us watching of course.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Camping Maka as part of an 8 night stay in Belgium in the worst weather we've camped in to date.
The site is superbly situated on the river Samois and in a wooded valley and it is tranquil, picturesque and well appointed. The owners, Juliette and Prosper are extremely friendly and both speak excellent English. The shop is well stocked, including fresh milk and Juliette takes orders for morning goods such as croissants and pains au chocolat. The bar is comfortable and cosy, I recommend the Godfroy white beer and the pizzas!
There are many rules on the site, all of which appear to be designed to make everyone's stay as pleasant as possible (no radios, no noise after 10. 30pm, etc. )and, apart from a German family (two dads, four kids, who arrived the day after us, everyone pretty much took care to be considerate campers.
Yes, the site can get muddy but, hey, it had rained for 8 days solid and it's by a river.
Maka is almost certainly the most picturesque, comfortable and friendly site we've stayed at and we plan to go back in September to watch the trees change colour and enjoy the late season.
Bertrix is certainly convenient, but Bouillon is far prettier and much more cosmopolitan

Visited in august and stayed in out tent on the non electric part of the site.
The owners spoke English well and were helpful but the electric side was very well kept and non electric was left to itself. Please note if you use this side of the site take wellies in case of rain it got very bogged in.
It states on your arrival sheet that there are designated camp fire places but during our stay everyone was having a fire in front of their tents. This could have been dangerous.
The bar did last orders at 10pm but and it seemed those they wanted to serve got their pints after this time. The owners couldn't decide what they were charging for drinks and we were overcharged each time by one.
If you decide to rent the teepe's then be warned they are right next to the park and trampoline and it was also situated next to the shower blocks.
The shower/toilet blocks were well kept but remember to take your own toilet roll and handsoap and towels (no airblowers)as this is not provided.
There is a bridge crossing to get into the site and we cringed upon seeing a few caravans cross and smack their under carriage both front and back!
The site is in a lovely place but it is all hills and bike riding is only for the most experienced.

We spent three days here by the Semois River the site has excellent facilities for children, modern toilet/shower block, very friendly Dutch owners who speak English.
We thoroughly recommend this site which is close to Bertrix a lovely small town with restaurants and shops, also close to Bouillon which has a market on Sundays. We would certainly return in the near future.
