I had never been camping before so I had absolutely zero idea of what it entailed: I thought you could pretty much just pitch up a tent anywhere as long as it wasn't someone's back garden! I later found out that this is 'wild camping' and frowned upon, so I reluctantly searched for campsites.
I was disheartened by the multitude of perfectly manicured campsites which were more akin to a Butlins or something of that nature, with long lists of strict rules: pitch where the warden tells you, no campfires, no young people/groups (I'm 27 but me and my friends look young, so people mistake us for students), no music. I wanted something a bit more, well, outdoorsy and back to nature!
This place was absolutely perfect. There is so much space, lovely views, you can pitch where you want (as far from other people as you want) and there are firepits available for campfires. You can buy wood for £5 a bag from the farmer which will last at least 3 hours or more. It feels as close to wild camping as you'll ever get on a campsite.
The facilities are minimal, but that is exactly what I wanted. There is a compost toilet (which I was a bit apprehensive about, but it was absolutely fine and didn't smell at all. Don't forget your own loo roll though. ) There are taps/hoses that supply drinking water. If you have young children/toddlers, this might not be the place for you as it really is quite basic in terms of facilities and there are occasional nettles and thistles dotted here and there. Older children will probably love it though.
At £5 per person, it was also an absolute bargain. If you like your camping a bit more on the wild side, I would definitely recommend this unpretentious, relaxed place.

Stayed for one night.
Met by 2 dogs, random tufted ducks, geese, chickens and a couple of sheep in one field. The farmer was not about, so spoke to a couple of farm workers. They pointed us to a couple of fields – loads to choose form, 2 quite steep until you get to the top….
It levels out nicely in the top field. Beautiful peaceful site, stunning views from the top of the hill. (not that suited to city slicker lowered vans, but managed to scrape on!)
Fields have random fire pits for you to use and a supply of chopped wood you can buy from the farmer. Water taps are scattered about and there is a composting loo too!
Met the farmer the next morning – a very friendly chap, he suggested a really nice walk for us to do via a couple of watering holes.
Would come again to this lovely campsite!

Our first impressions of this quaint little farm was one of surprise. It really did appeal to the 60's child within. A sort of hippie commune living in a variety of caravans in various stages of age. There was some amazing metal artwork by the sides of the buildings. We were met by Bob - who was courteous and friendly. We were delighted with the goose eggs and lamb sausages we brought for our bbq on Friday and Saturday.
This is definitely a back-to-basics camping experience. No showers, no electricity, just a field with a blue hose (water).
The site was quite busy this weekend - as a 'birthday' marquee was booked for Friday/Saturday. And yes that did mean really loud music till very late.
Still it was really nice to see children of all ages running around in the fresh air and just enjoying themselves.
The farm itself is placed (strategically) in the bottom V of a very steep valley but we did manage to find a relatively flat spot at the top of the hill. The views were amazing. We shared the field with a small flock of sheep, numerous hens and geese but these all seemed quite friendly even when chased by a group of boisterous children.
The walk back up the hill from the composting toilets is definitely not for the faint hearted. The farmer did mention that there were other composting toilets in the fields but we didn't find them.
We did however find a two water pipes at the top where we were camping - so at least we didn't have to lug water up the hill.
The weather was amazing this weekend which was a relief really - as we couldn't imagine trying to get our small car up the hill in the rain.

We visited this site as it is fairly local to us, and would give us the opportunity to try out all our gear for the new season. At £5 per adult and £2. 50 per child per night (dogs free)it wouldn't break the bank either. The campsite is situated on a working organic farm, and has a very eco feel to it - no showers, hot water or EHU, just a tap in a field and two very basic compost toilets. However, we saw this as a positive, as when camping we like to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The site is also close to Carsington Water, which we intended to visit.
Upon arriving, we were advised that we were the only campers that weekend, and so we could pitch where ever we wished in the main field. This field is on a severe slope, so the only place to pitch was at the top. However, the view from here was stunning. We shared the field with sheep, goats, chickens and two horses, which was nice.
The site allows campfires, which is great, and there are fire pits freely available around the site, and wood is available from the owner at £5 per bag. The farm also sells locally produced organic meat, including steaks, burgers and sausages. The chilli and lime sausages were delicious!
I did find the walk to the compost loos quite difficult, as we had a 5 year old with us - either down the hill to the farmyard (thus returning up the VERY steep hill) or accross another field, which although not steep, was very rough from tractor tracks and would prove very difficult in the dark. The compost loo was also slightly too high off the ground for my son to use, which you may wish to bare in mind if you have small children in your party.
Our visit was also marred by a group of approx 10 teenagers who were staying in the 'eco hut' at the bottom of the hill. They played loud music on their car stereo which totally ruined the chilled out atmosphere for us and could still be heard at 3am. We were advised that usually groups are not put in the same field as family campers, but sadly, that didn't help us and has now put us off returning.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon and pitched our tents in the main field near to the Eco-pod (a bit like a gypsy caravan with solar panels, cooking facilities and a shower) which we were told was available to rent for £40 per night.
There were two other fields where you could also camp. There was plenty of space and we didn't feel as though we were on top of other campers. Although it was quite windy, there were several sheltered areas around the edges of the field to pitch our tents.
The kids had a great time, playing on the old tractor, looking at all the rare breeds of chickens, ducks and Dollar the horse. There were even some cute little puppies which the owners of the campsite let the children take for walks.
One of the reasons we chose this site was because campfires were allowed and we borrowed a fire pit and bought a bag of wood for £5 (including newspaper, kindling and bigger logs). In the shop, you could buy organic meat and eggs from the farm and locally sourced sausages. The owners even lent us some freezer packs to chill our beers!
It cost £30 for two adults and three children for two nights and I loved the well-organised, organic yet quirky nature of this campsite and I will definitely go back- even if just to show my other half the Eco toilets! They were an experience (sawdust/no flush) but although they took some getting used to, are completely in line with the Eco-friendly nature of this campsite!
Campers were also invited to go on a guided farm walk of 1 1/2 to 2 hours but we couldn't face it after a day full of walking around this beautiful area.
Last thing to say is that location was great and only 5 mins from Ashbourne and Dovedale.

Arrived on the Saturday to an almost empty campsite. Had a wander down to pay our dues and met the owners who were very friendly and helpful who said the week previous they were packed out (so we were lucky!) On site there are two chemical toilets which could take some getting used to by the ladies. In the first field there are loose chickens and sheep which is fantastic for the children, if that's not your thing then choose another field, there's plenty! The views from the top are quite breathtaking so take some binoculars. We have been several times before and we never get bored the people are always friendly ,highly recommend it. Get gone.
