First trip away in 2015.
Very large, open site. Appears to be lots of people living in their caravans here and a large storage area. There is a children's play area and pool which looks a bit tired out of season.
The weather was wet and windy and around our hardstanding it was quite muddy, as the site is open the wind felt quite strong around our awning.
There is an excellent shop which is reasonably priced.

Very friendly reception with a well stocked shop including booze. Had a nice fully serviced pitch on block standing for £20/night which was very peaceful and heard no road noise. A dog friendly site but some of the owners let their dogs yap a bit too much in the morning. A large site surrounded by trees with access to the forest which was good for cycling/walking though some of the tracks were quite muddy. The forest holds a lot of wildlife with birds such as Dartford warbler, Woodlark amongst others. Not much to do otherwise, the pub Quiet Woman is a 20 min walk down the busy road which has no pavement but worth a visit for its good food, friendly service and Badger real ales, the pub can be reached using the forest trail also but takes longer. I walked to Wareham one day through the forest which took over an hour and caught a taxi back(£9). Someone mentioned a cold shower, I found the showers to be hot enough bur the water to the sinks were only warm otherwise great site.

This was our 1st Xmas in the caravan (after 8yrs of caravanning!). We have stayed at Birchwood before but this would have probably been in 2006 and I selected this site as the location was good (about 2 hours travelling/towing) and it's dog friendly.
We arrived on the Sunday before Xmas and the weather was awful due to the storm, wind and constant rain. Thankfully, we had booked a fully serviced pitch - block paved hardstanding, gravelled area to pitch our awning, individual hook up point, water tap and drainage. The car also fitted on our hardstanding too which meant we kept wet muddy feet and paws being walked in to the caravan to a minimum!
Although there were quite a few caravans on site/pitched on the hardstandings, many appeared to be seasonal and did not have anyone staying in them and we didn't see many people whilst we were there.
This site is perfect for exercising dogs as it has direct access to Wareham Forest. It is also close to beaches and tourist attractions. We drove to Studland beach on Boxing Day which took us approx 25 mins.
The shop was fairly well stocked and the wardens/staff very helpful and friendly. We discovered our waste pipe wouldn't reach the drain when setting up so my husband went to the shop to get some that would - they said don't worry about paying and we could settle up on the Tuesday when someone would be back in and know how much it cost. We also had a late stay on our departure day at no extra cost as it was quiet and no-one was coming onto our pitch - something that we were very grateful for as it meant we did not have to rush. The day we left was also the best day of the week weather wise so we were able to enjoy it, albeit whilst packing up!
My only niggle was that on the one occasion that I decided to use the washblock for a shower the water was cold and did not run hot or warm from the moment I switched the shower on! I did try another cubicle thinking the shower had a fault but that too was cold. I know that perhaps I should have mentioned it at the time but I didn't as we then used the shower in our 'van.
We had a lovely relaxing stay over the Xmas period and would certainly return, but probably out of peak (summer season) as I would imagine it could get very busy!

This was my first time caravanning on my own (2nd time I've taken my van out).
I only stayed for 2 nights midweek, there were enough people there but it wasn't busy.
There wasn't that much noise from the road considering it's pretty straight and can be quite fast, I never found it an issue getting in/out of the site from the road.
There are plenty of 'stations' which contain Fresh Water, waste water disposal and recycling/waste bins, you would never have to walk very far at all.
From what I saw there were 2 toilet/shower blocks which looked a decent size, I didn't require these services so didn't take much notice but they were a short enough walk for everywhere on site.
My pitch was a semi serviced non hard standing which included Fresh Water, Electric and TV connection. I used the TV connection hooked up to my Laptops Freeview USB stick which had a very good signal.
Access to the site just after the reception building is via an ANPR gate entry/exit system, very good indeed, saves messing around with a card to gain access.
The staff were friendly and helpful, I went back to the shop to get a few things, one time they just closed but opened back up for me so I could get a TV lead.
Not much else to say really, overall it was a good site and I recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic campsite.
The playground was perfect for our 2 children, the showers/toilets were spotless. The owners and staff were very pleasant and helpful.
The site was very busy, but the tents and caravans were very well spaced out.
We would recommend this site to anyone, you will need to take some strong pegs, the ground is very stony.

Fabulous break with my hubby and 11 year old daughter. Friendly and helpful staff and clean/tidy site. The shower rooms were also clean and checked regularly (the best I have used on a campsite). We found this campsite by chance and are happy that we did. Our 2 nights turned in to 4 nights. We are also looking at going back next week too! Very central for tourist areas such as Monkey World, Tank Museum, Corfe Castle and the fabulous Steam Engine. The beaches are lovely sandy beaches. Must have a car if you intend on going to beach or other tourist attractions. There is also a shop/off licence on site. Some evenings there is a food van that comes. Fish & chips one night and curry on another night. Lovely campsite.

Just back from a weekend at Birchwood. Went same time last year for the Dubbing in Dorset fest. Good site for families. Lots of space for games. Swings, play equipment, sand pit, paddling pool, tennis court and pitch and putt. Good grass but very stony under the surface. You need rock pegs. Mixture of tents, vans, some seasonal pitches. Mostly on open ground, gently sloping. Toilets and showers clean, checked frequently. Forest and dog walking from site.

Had a great half term week at Birchwood. My party consisted of my friend, her 8 year old daughter and her 86 year old mother, my 7 year old grandson and me.
Check-in was trouble free and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. I was given a site map and shown where my pitch was and advised that a guy would meet me there, which he did and settled us in nicely.
The site has marked good size pitches but not regimented, which gives it a nice relaxed casual feel.
The children had plenty to occupy them on site with the well equipped play area, mini golf and plenty of space to run around.
We had a fully serviced pitch which was great.
Shower/toilet blocks were clean and checked regularly, could do with another hook or 2 for hanging clothes and towels etc, did find you had to go quite early for the showers to be hot, tended to cool off a bit after 10am.
The shop is probably one of the best I've seen, they seemed to have everything, good range of foods, household goods, toys, really nice selection of wines, and an extensive range of camping accessories, from electrics to water and minor repairs.
The campsite is very well situated with lots to see and do within a small radius, Moors valley park and Go Ape, Monkey World, The lovely town of Poole, all worth a visit.
Hope to make a return visit later this year.

We were a party of 7 varied units (touring vans, folding caravan, tents and motor home) and we were sited together along the forest edge by the path, all with electric hook-up. We all enjoyed our stay from the day we arrived until the day we left. We were able to pitch so that we all faced each other, which is not always the case.
The staff were very helpful whenever we spoke to them. The toilets and showers were always clean, however the showers by the children's play park were not always hot, I didn't have any problem with the showers in the other block.
The shop had quite a lot of varied items considering its size. We bought chips from the take-away which were very good.
Our small children enjoyed both the park and the paddling pool and the older ones, the pitch and putt. We had wi-fi access so were able to use the laptop too.
We visited Swanage twice, once using the steam train and went for walks in the woods nearby. Corfe Castle is also close and visible from the train.
I didn't find the site crowded, we were there in the middle of August, so maybe it was busier nearer the bank holiday week.
If I can work out how to do it I will post photos of the site from various angles!
The only thing negative thing was not the fault of the site but inconsiderate dogs owners who allowed their dogs to run free instead of being always on a lead as our dogs were!

Just returned from 6 lovely days at Birchwood. And would definitely go back.
On arrival, the staff were very helpful and friendly and make the whole booking in experience quick and easy. The pitches were a good size considering we have a massive tent, although if we'd pitched front to back against the fence, our kitchen porch would have been on a fair slope.
We only ever used the bottom block of toilets / showers / dishwashing and they were always spotlessly clean. Showers were lovely and hot, we always went for a shower later in the evening when the rush had died off, so never experienced the queues which might have occurred.
The site is very big, and very open. We were lucky enough to be down a little lane which was mostly tents during our stay, towards the last couple of days more caravans turned up and it did start to feel a little closed in.
Overall a really love site - the takeaway was sampled on our first night and was top notch. The shop was always well stocked, we're still nibbling on some of the lovely Dorset lardy cake that we treated ourselves to!
This is our 6th visit to Dorset this year and I'm sure Birchwood will go on the list of sites to visit again.
