If informal camping with no ordered pitches is your thing, this is just the best site ever! The ground is uneven with a few rocky outcrops to avoid. Being on a mountainside means those levelling chocks for the campervan were essential!
The views across Ullswater to the Steamer quay and Helvellyn beyond are just stunning. Be sure to bring all you need as there is no camp shop. (There is an ice cream kiosk at the farm in high season though) The shower block is, as you would expect for adventurous hiking and climbing folks, fairly spartan but water is hot and the facilities were cleaned regularly.
This site has the added bonus of access to the lake, suitable for launching a canoe or small dinghy. Alternatively, a 20 minute walk round the end of the lake brings you into Glenridding, from where you can catch the steamer for a journey along Ullswater. We disembarked at Howtown and enjoyed a good afternoon's hike back to the campsite along the lakeside. Even our youngest, who was six at the time, managed the trek without grizzling as it was more of an adventure than a walk. (The promise of an ice-cream at the end helped!)

This campsite has fantastic views over Ullswater. Lots of walkers were camping when we visited. The showers and toilets are basic and kept clean. The nearby pub is great. This is a really beautiful spot.
Unfortunately you cannot book for this campsite. We arrived on Monday and there were few spaces to choose from. Pitches are not numbered so you are free to choose your own spot. If you move your car be prepared to find a tent in its space when you return! There are not many pitches on level ground so expect to be on a hill. Despite being very busy it was calm and quiet.
The track to the campsite is not easy especially in wet conditions. Lots of cars were wheel spinning on site and a transit van got stuck on the grass because of the muddy ground.
Personally I like a campsite where you are shown to a plot and can park your car next to your tent. I also disliked to overcrowding and steeply sloping hill so I will not return here again.

Stay away if you like all the comforts of home. This is very nearly 'proper' camping but it does have hot & cold running water, showers (very hot) and dishwashing area.
The track starts off bumpy and gets worse and is not for the feint hearted.
We visted at the weekend (not in school holidays) and it was packed with everyone trying to grab the flater land (yes it slopes from fell to lake!) and when you are out someone sticks a tent where your car was! The 'no groups' rule is not applied, the van rentals were a give away but no harm done. I am convinced the odd hiker just pitched up without booking as the farm is some distance away (down that track!)
Whilst a quiet spot, with clear rules we did experience cars moving on & off site late at night and early morning.
Despite the downsides this is still a great place to be and the simple pleasures of a BBQ within yards of the lake makes up for everything.

We stayed on a Sunday to Tuesday in June, so reasonably quiet, but the owners mentioned that they'd been featured in some newspaper articles and had been very busy, so not sure what it would be like at the weekend.
The site is on the Coast-to-Coast walk, so there were quite a few walkers without cars staying there.
There is a hill to the east, so the sun didn't get on the tent early - quite nice in June, but maybe not so when trying to dry the tent earlier / later in the year. The track to the site is not great, but our Fiesta managed it OK in dry weather.
The site is in a stunningly beautiful location with great views of Ullswater and the surrounding hills. There is a tea room by the camp office, but I'm not sure of the opening hours, but it was busy with walkers on the Sunday afternoon when we arrived.
The shower block is adequate and newish, with plenty of hot water, but an extra hook or two would help.
Patterdale is a short walk away, nice pub there and a shop/post office with essentials (most things reasonable but meths expensive).
The next village, Glenridding, is slightly bigger and has boat trips on Ullswater - you can get trips down the lake and walk back along the lakeside (it’s a lovely walk).
Would definitely go again, but might avoid weekends.

Site was briliant for what we wanted. Clean toilet and shower block and running water! there was a nice pub within walking distance which served lovely food. We were close to the activity centre we were visiting. The views surrounding the campsite are brilliant however there are very few flat pitches! so be prepared to slide in the middle of the night!

Pluses - lovely location, good (but not cheap) pubs with decent food, not too busy.
Minuses - not signposted, hard to find in the dark, not many level pitches.
It rained solidly with stiff winds all weekend when I visited but that's hardly the sites fault. Will come back next year when the weathers better.

The site itself is down a very bumpy and rocky track, not the place to be taking your coupes or sports cars put it that way! The field is away from the farm house itself and promotes a "we'll leave you to it" attitude. The shower and toilet facilities are adequate and the hot water seemed never ending. The field doesn't have very many flat areas, and we had to pitch on a slope that meant we were sliding down the tent of a night, however it wasn't enough to spoil the trip. The views from the camp site more than make up for it, coupled with the walks available from all sides of the camp. This was an excellent location if you are not looking for lots of amenities on site and prefer to "go it alone". Glenridding is a 10-15 minute walk away with shops and pubs.

A great site during the week (if you can find a flay pitch !) fantastic view over Ullswater. Facilities are acceptable. The track in was "interesting" but ok for most cars. (I have a4x4, so no issues) the slope in the campsite caused cars problems in the wet weather. At the weekend the site changes, with too many tents squeezed into a small site, it was noisy, the toilets were a mess. Large groups were let in and it was not a pleasant place to be ! There seemed to be no control on who used the site, at one stage a convoy of eight cars completely blocked the track into the site whilst their owners stopped at the tea shop. We WILL use the site again but only during the week and outside of the main holiday season. A great site ruined by overcrowding

A brilliant site for tents and small campervans. It's right on the edge of the lake on a hillside, just under Place Fell and offers great views of Helvellyn range. It's quite rugged: there is a long dirt track to the camping field (one couple lost their exhaust!) and there are no designated spaces, so you can pitch where you want. It was easy enough getting a flat pitch. Shower block was basic but clean and the queues were fine, even though I was there on the bank holiday weekend.
Great pubs available: Patterdale Hotel is a five minute walk and has a huge beer garden. Glenridding is about a 10-15 minute walk and has a range of good pubs, shops and places to eat.
A range of routes to Helvellyn summit can be reached by walking directly from the site. A nice tourist track steadily climbs to the top from behind the Patterdale Hotel, passing Grisedale Tarn on the way. Nice and easy for all abilities. Similarly, you can get onto the Striding Edge/Swirral Edge routes by taking the short walk into Glenridding.
Great site, will return when next camping in a tent.
