Having arrived on the site and took a look around it, we decided not to stay, despite the fact it was early evening and a busy time of year, we decided to take a chance and try to find somewhere else (we did luckily - Woodland View which was lovely). What put us off the most was the pitches - so crowded and scruffy, it would have been like pitching up in a town centre car park. The one we were offered was at the back of the owner's house, up against their wall! The toilets/showers were grotty to say the least. The area itself is beautiful and this site has access to the river if you are into canoeing. We were told the fairground was no longer there when I made the booking but it clearly was. The public access this as they do the canoeing facilities so I imagine this means lots of people coming and going on the site. If you don't mind any of this and just want a base in the area, you'd be ok but if you want a pretty and relaxing place, my advice is don't bother!

Beautiful area to visit but other than the pitches being on the flat, not much else going for this particular site.
A very run-down site in need of a desperate update and a bit of TLC.
On arrival and after pitching the tent we went for a walk around the site. We were surprised to see lots of things boarded up and closed. It was all rather spooky! We looked through one window to see what would have probably been a bustling function / entertainments room just abandoned and derelict. There was also a shop with no stock that was also derelict and that had a broken window!
Only two toilets and two showers for the ladies for the whole site with the block being less that desirable. On entering the small block for the first time I was greeted by a revolting old bath towel on the floor that was mopping up excess water. I braved a shower but was not impressed or did I feel refreshed after the experience. Paying in pound coins for the privilege of a sprinkle of water that frequently went from boiling hot to freezing cold. The shower cubicles were tiny and there was nowhere dry to get dry/dressed!
Also worth noting, the toilet/shower block was also a good walk away from the tenting areas - I did see a portacabin toilet block at the edge of one field but alas, this had had it's day and was not in use! (It had some very pretty swans painted on it though!)
Washing up facilities were present and satisfactory
The fairground mentioned on their website was nothing other than an empty hardstand area littered with rubbish with one rusty rollacoaster rotting in one corner and a few broken down lorries in another.
The amusement centre seemed in good running order - somewhere for the kids to spend their pocket money while you have a game of pool.
Apparently there was a cafe and bar on site but I did not check these out I'm afraid. Instead we sampled the food at the nearby hotel/pub that was very good!
There was a canoe centre that operates from the site so if you fancy going down the river then no distance to go at all to hire a canoe. There was also a riverboat cruise along the river Wye that went from the site so again very convenient. And very relaxing! (Both canoeing and the river cruise were very reasonably priced)
Also very close by is a butterfly farm and hedge maze so a few good things very nearby to do! Beautiful bike riding routes to go on too with some very quaint little pubs along the riverbank.
The cost was £7. 50 per night per adult (their website stated it was £7!)

I stayed on this site on the weekend of the 3rd to the 5th of June 2011, we had read the reviews prior to staying but we thought we would give it a try as we had spoken to others who had stayed there and they had said the reviews the site had were really unfair.
On the weekend we stayed they were hosting a ford cortina festival and to say the site was full was an understatement, however we felt the site was very well managed by the staff, noise bonds were taken from groups, which we found very impressive as by 11:15 pm the site was silent!
The toilets must have been cleaned at least 10 times during the day. Granted from other reviews the toilets are dated, but they were exceptionally clean. The showers weren't amazing for the £1 charge but they were clean and not freezing the bins were emptied frequently. The site had a very friendly buzz about it, this was from the staff, and their family and friends.
The fairground area is slowly disappearing to make way for more camping facilities. Which will be great when completed. The new pitches by the river are spacious and the views are amazing.
The on site bar is not great, however the hotel/bar which is 50 metres from the main entrance is really good, reasonably priced and we had some amazing food.
Next door to site was a great maze, a super butterfly centre and the canoe hire facilities on site are great value for money.
Would we visit again? Yes! If you want the Hilton, then stay in the Hilton. For camping it was great. The owner keeps it all together and everyone was friendly.
2 Adults 1 Child for 2 nights with electric was £42 which was easily accepted. They do a loyalty bonus too, the family in front of us on check in already had 3 stamps and they love the site.
Overall very happy and it's obvious the owner is on the case of modernisation, which is great as it is the heart of the Wye Valley.

A group of us - all very experienced campers - camped for one night at this site while backpacking along the River Wye. We did not enjoy the experience.
On the night we stayed, the site was full of groups of noisy youths partying all night. The site claims to have a noise curfew but this was certainly not enforced either during the evening nor late at night during our stay.
Because there were several of us, we were made to pitch on the 'Group Field' which was, in fact, part of an overspill carpark. The pitches were crowded together in straight lines - the young assistant who led us to our pitches admitted the idea was to get as many tents in as possible.
The carpark-cum-pitch was approx two hundred yards from the nearest water tap and the facilities block. As far as we could see, there was only one facilities block for the whole of the large campsite. I don't know about the ladies but the gents loo had just three loo cubicles and two shower cubicles. Inside, everything was very cramped - in the morning, some lads were washing and I could hardly squeeze past to use the loo.
It is a big campsite and though not full there were possibly up to 100 tents as well as loads of caravans. So the facilities were woefully inadequate for so many campers and caravanners as well as being a long walk from parts of the site.
There was a fairground on the site and a large bar. Although we did not visit the bar, we passed it on our way back from the pub and it was doing good business. That meant the site was full of tanked-up youths singing and laughing until the early hours on the 'Group Field'. Not only did that keep us awake, but the 'Family Field' was next door so families with young children also had to put up with the effing and blinding by the partying yobs.
I have stayed on all sorts of campsites and usually find something positive to say - in this case I can't think of a single redeeming feature. Unless you are in your teens or twenties this site isn't for you.

I decided to take a short (2 night) last minute break with my two girls, as unfortunately my partner couldn't make it. When we arrived, I went to book in straight away, but found the owner not at all helpful.
The people camping, I found to be really lovely and my girls made friends with two lovely girls on the pitch next to us. However, there are a number of people residing on site, which I must say ruined the atmosphere.
The toilet / shower blocks were poor. There was only 2 female and 2 male toilets for the whole site. There was a £1 charge for the showers, which were really cold most of the time. It was a complete and utter nightmare trying to take a shower with my two year old, as there was no room to get changed and we ended up getting our clothes wet.
The fair (as advertised on the web site) isn't there any more. The pub / cafe looked tatty and the food we ate from the cafe was disgusting. All these facilities are, however, available to the general public anyway.
On a plus side, the area is absolutely beautiful. There is a lovely maze, crazy golf course and butterfly farm just 5 minutes walk away and we all really enjoyed this. The site is also in a great location and in the right hands, would have great potential. Also, in comparison to other pitches, we did have a lovely pitch. There are also a selection of river-side pitches which would be perfect for people into watersports.
On a whole, I felt that customer service was lacking. What is wrong with saying a quick hello to campers when they walk past? (This didn't happen). The only time the owner actually spoke was when we were leaving, as someone had already turned up for the pitch we were on.
Would I visit again? I would re-visit the area without a shadow of a doubt, but wouldn't be staying on this particular site.

We visited this site in Sept 2010. Reception was not well signed, with the girl behind the desk quite surly and not very helpful.
We were in on the small field, by the road.
The fun fair was in full boom but ended at 6.00 pm which we found quite early ? Found out very expensive we wondered why no one was using it !
Pub on site was nice and friendly - food looked very good. We visited the pub at the top of the steps to the site overlooking the beautiful hills. Again lovely staff and friendly.
Shower/toilet facilities were dreadful. Hell of a long way to go to the toilet. They did open the portacabin but to be honest this was disgusting and we could not use it. Only two showers operated by £1 not enough room to swing a cat and not very warm. Disappointing to be fair - in need of an up date and at £23 per night not cheap either.

The river wye campsite is set in a very nice location with river wye running alongside the campsite, also ross on wye is 10 min drive with a nice town centre
As for the campsite it looks very dated and overpriced at £25 a night for 2 adults, 2 children with electric in may. The toilet block is fairly clean, £1 for a shower
£1 to enter adventure park, the funfair was very old looking with anyone rarely using it
Pitches are uneven and worn grass in many areas, far too many rules for a site that is not particularly run well. There is a cafe and pub on site which I did not use
On a positive note, the boat trip is great with a friendly service

I had doubts on arrival to the site, and they didn't end there. This site is dirty, shabby, dated and overall needs major refurbishment. The toilet blocks were disgusting, the pitches if you needed electric were small. The fairgroud was extremely dated, would not recommend this site to anyone. Having paid over £20 did not expect to have to pay for showers (£1), only to have cold water.

We Visited this site for May bank Holiday and we wont be returning. Reasons being that the toilet block was not very clean at all. Only two toilets and showers in the Ladies and Gents and one disabled.
We arrived on the Thursday afternoon and I don't think they were cleaned then until Saturday morning. Between that time toilet paper had ran out and the toilets were rather disgusting. I don't know how they can be a Caravan and Camping Club CL Site.
The site layout was very basic which was a shame as it could be a lovely site if more effort was made as it is set near a wood which is great for walking. For £15.00 a night I would expect more.

Nice location on the river bank with private access for mooring canoes.
Facilities are poor for the expensive tariff, can get very muddy in poor weather, toilets aint very clean and camping utilities are quite dirty.
Easy access to the leisure park, arcade useful for wet times for the kidz and the clubhouse is friendly and reasonable.
Great area to walk and canoe
