If like us you want to get away from civilization and get back to basics then Tyllwyd is certainly for you. The site is situated on a working farm so if you expect top quality facilities and a supermarket round the corner then you may want to give this site a miss. It's proper camping with a capital 'C' and how very wonderful it is!
The location is quite remote and the scenery quite breathtaking. Despite the heavy rain (we do not go for the sun anyway) we were just blown away by the staggering beauty of this area. Apparently the AA voted the Mountain Road to the Coast one of the top ten scenic routes in the world!. You can see why.
Visit Devils Bridge (about 6 mls away), the Bridges walk is super if a little dangerous in parts! (wear boots). The Hafod Hotel does a half decent Sunday carvery and a very nice 'Golden' pint. There is also a tiny village shop/PO and Off Licence where you can buy supplies.
There are plenty of Forest walks nearby too, We walked lots but never saw another sole! We enjoyed and would recommend the Arch Woodland Trail and Hafod Forest, with two small children in tow. Aberystwyth (approx 17 mls away) is pleasant enough for a day out and is regarded as a major town and as such has all the shops you would want.
On site facilities are very basic but that didn't bother us in the slightest. In fact that was the attraction. We take every thing and the kitchen sink anyway!
Midges could be a problem on the river bank but the rain kept them at bay while we were there.
We shall and will return to this little gem of a site in the future and see the Red Kites feed at Bwlch Nant yr Arian.

Idyllic spot in the midst of fantastic scenery. Very remote and therefore one of the most wonderful sites I have been to.
You need to stock up on food for a few days, because it is quite drive to the nearest shop. Even more important, take plenty of midge repellent and insect bite cream.
Have somewhere you can retreat to at the worst times for the midges which was morning and early evening (we found)- your car, caravan or motorhome, or a tent with a large sitting area which you can still see out of, because you need to be able to enjoy the views! I recommend burning mosquito coils, as they seem to help keep the midges out.
There is only one shower and one washing up sink, so you may have to queue for these, but we never had to wait for the toilet even though there was just two.
We all loved this site. The location is just so gorgeous, and all you can hear at night is the sheep and the babbling stream. Red Kites fly over head, and children can play safely in the play area or the stream. There is a large field at the far end of the site where campers can be even more peaceful and away from everyone else, if they don't mind the extra walk to the toilet.
We will be back as there seems to be so much to do round here, that we didn't have time for.
We cycled along the Elan Valley Trail, walked around Devil's Bridge waterfalls, and took the steam train to Aberystwyth, but there are plenty of walks around the area, and some other family friendly attractions.

All I can say about this site is fantastic great for the real nitty gritty camper, travelled over the old mountain road, like being on top of the world, camp owners very friendly and welcoming.
They do have hook ups if you want them buti was travelling on my motor bike just basic essentials, so quiet, pitched by the river lovely.
Only problem midges in the evening. Places of interest was devils bridge or rhayader in the other direction,
Superb views, toilets ok, with one shower room and washing up room, small site on working farm well worth visit for the real camper

Great Camp site, we stayed for 2 nights me my wife and two children aged 6 and 2 also our dog. Very clean and tidy facilities,
we went there for my daughters 2nd birthday we were going to only stay for night as it was her first time camping but she was fine so we stayed another night.
A safe and friendly site for children my kids loved it. We are going back in few days for father’s day just booked it.
Clean toilets and wet room bit of a walk from site but not a problem, BBQ and benches next to stream, we kept our cool box and my beer cool in the Stream.
So overall we were very happy with the site and looking forward to going back in a few days time.

Basic site but made up for by its idyllic location alongside the river with mountains both sides and sheep and cattle grazing.
Nice to feed crumbs to the friendly pair of chaffinches who visited me every morning. Very little traffic along the mountain road. Didn't have any problem with midges in June.
James and Clare lovely people, always willing to help. Will freeze ice packs for free.
Long walk to shower, toilets etc which were kept fairly clean, free hot water, loo roll, soap and hand dryers. Only one shower which was inadequate at a quiet time so expect a queue in school hols.
No phone signal for miles (Orange), generally not a problem but I was unfortunate enough to have car problems and had to keep trotting to the farmhouse to use their phone.
Lovely walks from the camp site. As other reviewers have said, stock up on essentials as there's nothing for miles. Heaven!

A very nice and well kept, quiet little site.
Very pleasant spot being next to a river, the toiled facilities are a bit of a stroll from the far end of the site, but this shouldn't put anyone off, as they are kept very clean!
A number of pre built fire/barbecue areas and picnic tables available, all in all very relaxed and fab views.
Regularly camps small groups here with no complaints, Clare and James are very friendly and helpful and put a lot of time into keeping the place tidy.
Midge repellent would be a very good idea in July. The Google car passed on an April visit.
Well recommended, especially if you are cycling or enjoy walking.

We stayed at this beautiful campsite for the end of May bank holiday, we stayed for just over a week.
It's just up from the beautiful Elan Valley on a spectacular mountain road. The roads are very quiet and lovely for cycling on.
The owners are very friendly and helpful, the campsite and farm are very well kept and maintained. There's a nice play area for the children and the shallow river also provided a lot of entertainment. Fires are allowed as long as they are in the BBQ or a fire pit.
We took mosquito coils and spray which seemed to work. They weren't there for very long, only just as it was getting dark then they disappeared again.
They give a discount if you stay for a week or more.
I was a bit concerned at first by the two toilets and one shower but this turned out not to be a problem. The site is a lot smaller than a lot of campsites. Over bank holiday there would be sometimes one person waiting in front of me for the toilet, in the mornings there was a queue of about 4 for the shower but no-one in the evening. After bank holiday you didn't often meet anyone at the toilet block! (There were only 8 caravans/tents).
It is now one of our favourite campsites, a proper get away from it all, very restful and peaceful.
We are planning our next return!

This campsite is set in beautiful surroundings-valleys and a stream running through it.It is quite isolated but that is a good feature! Next to the Elan Valley and the resevoirs-which are good to visit.
Facilities are 1 male/1 female toilet, 1 shower room(free) and a small room with a sink for washing up. Also there is a small playground and many benches and barbeques.
Main problem for us was the midges- the one night was very bad and we had to wear scarves over our faces as even breathing and talking was difficult. Also got bitten to death! I imagine the site is perfect when there are no midges though!

Lovely site.
Very quiet: very well run and maintained, miles from anywhere (roads are great fun to drive around though!) and great walks up the surrounding hills. The owners are always ready for a chat or help, and the site has a very laid-back feeling.
The river is a great hit with the young (and not so young) and the Elan Valley is close enough for a good days walk.
Our favourite campsite we've been to yet.

This quiet little site is about 10-15 minutes drive(along a narrow road) from the nearest shop, so make sure you're well stocked! The location is lovely, surrounded by hills and with a wide stream running through the site. Red Kites can be seen overhead. Very quiet. There is just one toilet for the men, one toilet for the women and a single shared shower. The facilities are kept clean. Recommended for a few days away from it all.
