Nice small farm based site with separate tent and caravan areas. The toilets are very basic and only 1 shower (1 in the men's and 1 in the ladies) which operates on 20p's for 3min.
Hot water in the sinks is the same, but washing up and washing yourself share the same sinks. Otherwise they were kept clean. Despite being close to the main road the caravan area was undisturbed by traffic noise, however the camping area is much nearer.
Bewarned, there is little or no mobile phone signal on any UK network, anywhere on the site. We enjoyed our 3 day stay in March 2011.
Our caravan was sited next to the stream, and waking up to the sound of running water was lovely.
Dogs are allowed, and electric hook up is available at additional charge. Camp fires are also allowed. The site is basic, but clean and value for money.

We stayed for three nights in August. Should have been four but the weather on night three (torrential rain and gales) defeated us! We stayed in the main camping field. It was just about empty so we were able to find a pitch on one of the flat bits of the field - it is quite sloping in places.
The main problem we experienced was that the access track into the camping field only goes about a quarter of the way into the field. In dry weather driving on the field is fine but a bit of rain does reduce it to soggy quagmire quite quickly! We followed the advice of a previous reviewer and parked our car on the side of the track with two wheels on the tarmac thus ensuring we were able to get out.
The farmer seemed a friendly bloke who would tow you out if you did get stuck though! The caravan part of the site had a much better lay out with a decent track along its length and in some respects its a shame the owners don't look after their camping clients as well as they do their caravaners.
The washing facilities were a bit on the basic side. One block divided into two (male & female) with a single shower in each. Good job the site wasn't busy! Showers cost 40p for six minutes - the ladies shower didn't work though - and even hot water to wash your hands cost 20p! There were no washing up facilities either.
The location was fantastic though and very handy for Cader Idris. It was rather remote though with the nearest shops on Machylleth 6-8 miles away so not a place to run out of milk!
To sum up, I'd say the site is fine for a short stay if you're touring but I wouldn't want to base myself there for any period of time due to the basic facilities and remoteness.

The owners were extremely friendly, helpful & pleasant. The elderly man sits in his little car at site entrance & escorts you to the field on arrival. Stunning location with cader idris as a magnificent backdrop.
We went for lots of great walks and collected wood for our evening fire. Beautiful walks. Not far from tal-y-llyn lake which is breathtaking (we nicknamed it the mirror lake).
Make sure you have lots of supplies as there are no shops around. Garage is about 10 min drive away. Dolgelleau centre about 15-20mins.
Basic facilities, but farmer is constantly popping to toilet block cleaning & making sure they are stocked with toilet roll etc
Working farm so expect the noises & smells that go with it (which I love). They herded the sheep through our field on the last morningch the dogs herding them of our stay, was great to watch the dogs rounding them up.
Would definitely recommend this site

Stayed 3 nights at Cwmrhwyddfor in our motorhome. The site was fabulous - tucked right under Cadair Idris and by a crystal clear mountain stream (the sound was wonderfully relaxing and we slept like a dream).
Some children had caught a brown trout and it had expired before they put it back in the stream, so we had it for breakfast! We were met by Mr Nutting (Snr) who showed us to our hook-up and was extremely friendly - he even came to shake our hands and say goodbye.
Mr Nutting (Jnr), who was the farmer, came each day (at least three times) and attended to the toilet block.
Facilities were limited, one shower and 2 toilets in the ladies. But, the whole essence of this particular site was its location (walk directly up Cadair without driving to start point), the stupendous scenery and the very friendly and informative hosts.
We would definitely go again. Ps. The dogs did bark but not consistently and not at night. We also found out that one of the farmer's sons was an experienced sheepdog trainer - how marvellous to find young people carrying on such amazing skills!

Beautiful location.Shame about the facilities.
There were cob webs everywhere with bugs caught up in them. No soap or toilet roll supplied. Hot water was available at a cost of 20p which is not too bad but when you consider the one and only sink in the ladies toilet was for washing dishes, other campers used this sink for cleaning their boots!
There was a shower at a cost of 20p for 3 mins but I didn't use it due to the mouldy shower mat which when moved had wood lice underneath.
I think this could be improved with a simple paint and tidy up and another suggestion which other sites use is to leave a mop and brush so people can clean up after themselves. Not much to ask for? However this was a very cheap site at only £10 per tent per night. I wouldn't have paid any more.
No local shops nearest is Dollgelau however there is a very nice pub just 10 mins walk.

Great basic facilities camping, on a very slight incline with a few level areas -regularly cleaned toilets & metered shower (2 x 20p for 6 mins), owners always available. The farm dogs only bark as visitors arrive & are very well trained, and as people are allowed to bring their own dogs, previous reviewers may've been complaining about others. There is a plentiful supply of free firewood -the owner will tell you kindly that you may use it 'at your own risk'.
You'll be pitched a narrow field away from the main road, but I didn't find it noisy.
Because of where it is, bring everything else that you need (unless you're happy to drive the short distance to Machynlleth) & you'll enjoy your stay.

Superb location, the caravan part of the site has nice flat pitches, with hard standings and electric hook ups, with the pitches being next to the river. We weren't camping, however the tent field looked to be quite sloping. Five minute walk down the road to the local pub / hotel, and the Cadair Idris car park.
Please note that the site is just off the A487 just north of Minnford, not off the B road south of Minnford - web site is a mile out!
Toilet & shower facilities are basic, but clean and adequate. No children's facilities. Friendly owner came around regularly to make sure that everyone was OK.
Massive downside however - barking dogs! It would have been a lovely peaceful site, other than the incessant barking dogs from the farm house from 5.30 am til late at night. They really were barking most of the time!
This could be a fabulous site, other than the barking dogs at the farm, which wrecked it for us, god help the people in tents! We won't bother going back to this site, unless the dogs have been got rid of!

Just got the van and this is only the second site we've visited so can't do any comparisons. We know the area well- great for walks. The popular walk up to Cader Idris is really close to the site. If you want to walk on the flat try the precipice walk - it's not as bad as it sounds and views are great over Barmouth estuary and across to Cader. Good fishing in the lake there. The campsite facilities we found basic but clean. Access easy and pitches flat. The owners were friendly and helpful. £14 per night for van and two adults with hook up. We had a lot of rain and a gale but the pitch didn't get too muddy and our awning stayed put. We were told it was a sheltered spot. There is a stream running by the caravan/camper pitches which was very full while we were there and I found the sound of rushing water irritating when trying to sleep. Also farm dogs barked quite a lot but not at night. All things considered it was more than OK and we would stay again if it ever stops raining.

A friendly, somewhat casual site with plenty of level pitches with hookups for camper vans & caravans alongside a stream. Located at the head of the picturesque valley just off the main road and several minutes drive from the nearest shop or town.
The tent field was strangely, very boggy for our arrival and a few needed a tractor to tow them out of the mire. I only just managed with a helpful push from a fellow camper. I say strangely as the field is quite sloping, it wasn't raining and others sites appeared to have less mud.
The site is run by 3 generations of the family. Grandfather; parking by the gate and collecting the money (£5pppn for us at least) Father often seen cleaning the rather basic toilet hut and son cheerfully odd jobbing (tractor tows etc).
GOOD POINTS -the relaxed pitch anywhere attitude,
The camp fire wood provided,
Chatty friendly welcome,
Location near to CADIR IDRIS car park
And 1 Pub.
1 shower and 1 hot water shower over sink at 20p a go!
BAD POINTS - The almost continuous noise from the 2 farm dogs yapping for 18-20 hours often setting off the campers' dogs in a cacophony added to by the Lowing of the(Oft)herd!
No hot water tap, soap dispensers or hand dryers in the toilet hut (a recipe for bad hygiene or even food poisoning?)
No Washing up area- an outside sink would do!
The A road directly above the site was busy early until quite late.
We enjoyed the weekend and its relaxed attitude, unfortunately so did some raucous groups alongside so we'll try some others in the region next time!

We stayed here for the August bank holiday so it was about as busy as I can image the site getting. Even so we had plenty of space in the overflow field. The main field looked to be more congested but no worse than any other site on a bank holiday.
The facilities are quite basic – a single coin operated shower in the gents and one in the ladies. The only washing-up sink is in the ladies and someone did take offence at me being in there washing up. Though old and basic the facilities are kept clean by the friendly owner who seemed to be there constantly – replacing toilet paper and chatting to folk. Maybe we were showering at strange times but we never needed to queue.
The best thing about this site is that you are allowed to have campfires, which makes having your dinner and sitting out at night so much nicer.
There is a pub a couple of minutes walk from the site (which we didn’t visit) but there is nothing else in short walking distance. The nearest shop of any kind is a petrol station about a fifteen minute drive away.
The location is excellent – beautiful scenery and very well placed for walking on Cader Idris.
We will definitely be going back. Not just because the site is nice but because Cader Idris was so much quieter than Snowdonia on a bank holiday weekend.
