September 2003 What can I say , if you haven't visited the Scilly Isles you have really missed out. Beautiful tranquil islands, gorgeous white granite beaches and crystal clear turquoise seas.. you cant believe you are still in Britain. The gardens on Tresco are breathtaking, tropical plants enjoy the very mild climate (30% better than the mainland) it really is like being somewhere tropical.
Getting to the island is by Ferry or Helicopter. The crossing to the islands can be quite rough as you are against the tides, coming home is MUCH smoother honest ! it is well worth it though.
By Ferry you can take ALL your camping gear. It is loaded in steel containers and will be generally be unloaded and transported to the site for you on the islands. By helicopter you are a little limited to how much you can take. You can buy most stuff on the island so no need to take the kitchen sink! You will arrive on the largest Island St Mary's. The campsite is a 10 minute walk (uphill) from the centre of town. The walk home on a star lit night is to be savoured with gorgeous views. There is a bench halfway up the hill (called Don's bench!) for a much needed breather (especially after a couple of pints :) )
The campsite is nicely set out with high hedgies for wind protection. Toilets and showers are adequate. On my first visit they were spotless but the second visit was whilst a group of school kids were staying there, they obviously were not house trained, some had difficulty even hitting the pan ! You cant really blame the site for such disgusting habits !
There are daily trips to the rest of the islands. Each has its own character, some have outstanding beaches some gorgeous walks. Its a land forgotten in time. Cost of these trips can mount up over a week, but it's up to you how often you use them.
I wouldn't say it was the cheapest place to eat out and not too much choice but there is a good supermarket on St Mary's with everything you need for everday stuff.
Definitely one to visit. I'll be going back again and again ....

This was my second visit here and is as easy as the review by Simonnd says, so cannot really add much more to that very comprehensive and accurate report except that the campsite is so sheltered that my tent withstood a south westerly gale during my first visit in a wild October. To eat out you have to go down hill past the Dungeon Castle hotel (expensive here) to the main town Hugh Town, there are four pubs, all do food and several cafes / restaurants. My particular favourite pub being the Atlantic. For beer connoisseurs the island has its own brewery,The Isle of Scillys brewery, natural Beauty, a bitter, was one of my preferences. As other comment the campsite at St Agnes looked very exposed but the campsite on St Martins looked the opposite which I may try one year. Inter island travel is readily available daily from the main harbour. P.S. The clanking bell was no problem and I slept well every night.

We stayed at The Garrison campsite this year for 6 nights. It was our first experience of Scilly campsites and the process involved , with tent and equipment. Getting there: Easy! Load up your car or camping trailer (less than 72" wide) , book tickets on Scillonian (adult £89 ret) ,arrive 1 hr before departure, helpful team on dock load your bags into 6x6 container , enjoy the voyage, 2:40 , at St Mary's all is collected by Garrison Holidays, (IF LABELLED), walk up hill, collect gear on provided trolleys. No cars on Scillies for visitors , but your camping trailer will be on-loaded and transported. Return , pack up by 11.00, enjoy the day in St Mary's , get the 1630 Scillonian. All your gear transported to dock. Cost about £20 night for 3 of us Pitches. Old Garrison site, clean, flat, sheltered. Toilets very good, Showers you need £1 coin, spacing between tents well controlled, never overcrowded. Small shop open at the right times supplies every basic for camping.(Ice and cold white wine) BBQs ok Helpful staff in shop. Ignore the clanking bell of the buoy at night, it did not trouble us at all. Set next to excellent sports field, tennis cricket nets, soccer pitch, child's play galleon. Spectacular views over St Mary's sound. Can get fully booked . 10mins walk to shops and inter island boats. Great for families. Highly recommended. Other Scilly options we saw: Bryher, sloping , more basic, slightly exposed. St Agnes, The most scenic, great community feel, seaviews, helpful farm, water shortage if busy. In poor weather you would need a strong tent.
