We booked two nights here and stayed for one. Didn't really like it all. We don't feel like we got an open arms welcome at all. I went to put something in the the bin and couldn't get close enough because of the smell that was coming from them and litter was strewn all over the place. If you have a dog please be careful because there is barbed wire in amongst the bushy hedge with is not apparent without looking extremely close up.
The camping was cheap though so would be good if you can enjoy yourselves there. Also we think that one tap serves the whole campsite for water so if its busy you may be queuing and we couldn't find anywhere to empty our chemical toilet

Jim is sitting on a gold mine but doesn't know it. He has a 5 acre 'L' shaped field, level and low cut grass. Very few electric points, a box of 4 by the pub car park and 6 at the top of the widest field next to the water taps. I don't think he takes the touring side seriously. There is so much going for this plot someone needs to convince him. Great place for children liking outdoor pursuits, no play area though. Dog owners should love this site great for their dogs to roam safely. I enjoyed the stay but thought the amenities were next to basic. We were expected to pay a pound for the use of the shower which required the key from the pub, located next to the pub in an outhouse also used for storage.
Nevertheless the stay was enhanced by the laidback attitude of the landlord, trusting and friendly, a dutiful landlord, also enjoyed the pubs' dog Meg who greets you when you setting up and makes herself at home by your feet. Pub meals were good value and enjoyable and good ales. The pub does not always offer food every day it depends on how busy it is, it is mainly bar meals as there isn't a restaurant as such. The site price, I think is overpriced for the amenities it has.
The plus side is the proximity to Maldon, a lovely little river town, with quays to visit and pubs overlooking the Blackwater inlet well worth visiting the site is half an hour from Southend.

We choose The Huntsman and Hounds for our very first camping trip!
A great hideaway for real camping. We went right to the end of the field so was all on our own which suited us. The kids really enjoyed playing on the hill.
The people in the pub were really friendly and it was a really nice pub with a lovely well kept garden.
If some proper showers and a washing up area was created I would return again and again. But it was just a line of four showers (only one working) in a dirty storage room.
That room could be cleared out of it's junk and two separate areas created easily enough - shame.

Just come back from 5 nights here!
It was a perfect base to visit Southend and Maldon. And we were very lucky with the weather!
The site is literally a 'huge' field, our children were children for a week it was fantastic to see.Football and rounders, and in the pub garden there is a huge trampoline which kept them bouncing for hours.
Not many other campers but it made them play together for a change (4 of them)
The children used the toilets and said they were clean and tiday, my husband and I did not!
We did not go into the pub other than to pay but heard it did nice food and was very friendly. We had a good week, but this site is only for people who really do want to camp and make the most of it.

We stayed for 1 night just a quick break to the Essex coast. Really good flat field and the pub is very nice, 2 good real ales on tap though unfortunately the chef was away when we stayed so had to go somewhere else for grub.
The landlord described the showers as “very basic” and they are, but they are hot and do the job.
Will be heading back in better weather this summer :)

Stayed for 2 nights in March, lovely area and lovely large field, as in a prev review check ground when pitching a tent as earth can get churned up in places. Pub was really nice and friendly and served lovely food. Very cheap rate for 2 nights. Our only gripe was the showers, we have facilities for washing etc so didn't use them, but building definitely looked like it needed modernising and wasn't too keen on having to get dressed properly before washing, to go into the pub in morn for key. If they had a lock on the inside but were accessible in daylight hours that would be easier. All in all though a very very good site.

Visited site for first time. We were doing a charity walk for comic relief, and after walking nearly 22 miles we phoned the site for a pitch and was told to come along
When arrived we was welcomed by Jim with open arms as they say
Lovely flat site
Superb Food
Great electric showers
24hr toilet block
All staff welcoming
The whole experience was reasonably priced as well

We arrived at this site on Friday 26th sept 08.
The site was very large and flat. Very quiet considering part of the field is next to a road.
Facilities are ok there are some electric hook ups which are £3 a night.
Charges were £7.95 per night plus £1 per person a night.
Toilets were clean, they are part of the pub.
There are showers but we did not use them.
Jim, the owner, is very friendly and runs the pub very well.Very good staff.
The pub sells good food and drink.
We had a great time, will be going back there next year no problems.

We got back yesterday after great first time camping trip - though only one night, we would have loved to have stayed longer.
Owners and his bar staff made us all feel straight at home and were welcoming to both us and our dog. Pub served lovely food and was full of cheerful friendly people.
Toilets were regularly cleaned and open 24/7. Showers available though we didn't bother for just the one night.
We found a great corner plot and found the ground nice and flat - pegs went in easy (and no bent ones!)
Electric hook up available for those who want it.
There are a few shops locally for provisions and a Chinese and Indian take-away a few fields away. Lots of places to visit nearby- beaches, leisure parks etc all within a short drive.
We will definitely come back here as it's a place that makes you relax. Bring some games for the kids as there is plenty of room for them to play and loads of surrounding fields too.
There were quite a few tents/caravans on the field but there was no overcrowding - lots of space for everyone. The dog loved it too.
Fabulous - we'll be back soon!

Sssssh! A gem in Essex! Simplicity at its best. If you have friends that live in Colchester or Chelmsford and you don't want a visit to Babylon. Make them meet you here!
The other reviews pretty much cover the facilities of the site but its simplicity is its beauty. Kids need to be reminded of the pleasures of swingball and rounders occasionally. Leave the playstations at home!
