We spent 2 nights at the White Horse and loved it, we are already planning our next trip with friends. The field is a bit uneven and the grass a bit long but as we only paid £10 we were not too bothered.

We had to sample the local brew which we certainly recommend. We did not try the food in the pub, but it is mostly locally sourced and organic, looked reasonable priced. We will give it a try on the next trip.

The shower/toilet block is as previously described but we found them to be clean, with lots of hot water and not overcrowded (although the site was not busy).

The area is very picturesque and ideal for cycling/walking. There are 2 holiday cottages within the site which would be perfect for friends / family who are not too keen to 'rough it' but would still like to be be part of a get together.

We could pitch where we liked and it was all very laid back which we really appreciated.

It was the most relaxing weekend, with fab weather, good drink and beautiful surroundings. We will be returning very soon and as it is only 30 minutes from home will be the site of choice for a quick get away.

The telephone instructions from landlady Amie were simple and irresistible: 'Come into the pub and say hello when you arrive'. The White Horse in Edwardstone comes complete with campsite attached, in a hamlet surrounded by quiet lanes and footpaths perfect for cycling and walking. Shops and stores can be found in Boxford, a mile or so away.

Arriving Sunday lunchtime, we had a brief explanation of the facilities and then pitched our tents where it suited us in the 90x45 meter field. The ground here was barren in places, quite lumpy and peg-bendingly hard but well sheltered on three sides by trees and on the fourth by ecologically friendly cottages,
a toilet & shower block, the pub, and a micro brewery (yes, really!). At the far end of the field spinning merrily and quietly on its tower was the micro brewery’s Proven 6KW wind turbine.
The site’s three or four movable trestle tables make life easier for campers travelling light. Chemical toilet facilities are available, hook up is not. A large pot-wash area that would benefit from a canopy has plenty of hot water. Loos have plenty of paper and are kept clean.

The pub’s fine range of local and guest beers - including a rich-tasting mild from next door’s brewery - are hand pumped or in barrels behind the bar. We didn't know that food is not served on Sunday and Monday evenings but Amie saved us that night when we asked for a meal, giving us local takeaway menus and supplying crockery and cutlery when our meal arrived. Thanks Amie. The Bell Inn at nearby Kersey serves good food and we enjoyed a very reasonably priced dinner there on Monday.

The eco-friendly solar powered shower and toilet block was more of a stumbling block. The two showers are clean, free, hot and planet-saving but there's just one toilet cubicle for women and one cubicle for men, which has no urinals. We were fortunate that few visitors were on site during our stay so we could watch for a vacancy from our pitch, but the toilet facilities must be woefully inadequate at even moderately busy times. Worse still, the ceiling space is shared, as is the floor space - the thin party walls stop 6 inches short making mopping easier - and sound travels effortlessly. Anything happening in one cubicle is heard, pin sharp, throughout the small block. So, unless you take in a ghetto blaster or can get Brian Blessed to sing shouty sea shanties nearby, your endeavours will not go unnoticed by others enjoying the intimacy of the facilities.

The shortage of loos coupled with their lack of simple privacy would make me think twice about a return visit and that’s a shame because otherwise the White Horse Camp Site has a lot to offer.

The White Horse Inn Campsite is a Camping & Caravanning Club CS, but seems to be open to all.

First the campsite: it is basically a field behind the White Horse Inn. If you like small, secluded, rural, well equipped yet informal sites, this is a hidden gem!

There is a very modern, small w.C. / shower (free, with proper taps, not the press button types!) & washing up facility conveniently located in one corner. Maybe we were unlucky, but it could have done with more frequent cleaning as the weekend progressed. Providing a mop & bucket, so we could have given it a quick once over ourselves would have helped.

The building work mentioned in VPClarke's review is now complete and everything is tidy.

Now The White Horse Inn: This is a fabulous rural pub. Excellent & very reasonably priced home made food; wide range real ales from its own microbrewery; real ciders (you must try the Apple Pie Cider.); a wonderful beer garden and free music evenings. There are even two holiday cottages for those who do not want to camp. (See their website for full details, which you will find is totally representative.)

Edwardstone is an unspoilt, classic Suffolk / Essex village. Set in a rural agricultural location within a network of virtually traffic free lanes and footpaths. There is a pleasant circular woodland walk behind The Millennium Green opposite the White Horse. The bright lights of Colchester are only approximately 10 miles / 30 mins away. Colchester Zoo is excellent.

No local shops. Get your basics in Boxford and everything else in Hadleigh or Sudbury. Hadleigh is worth a visit in its own right as it is not over run with the ubiquitous national chains, but retains individual / independent shops. There is also a nice riverside walk.

A quintessentially wonderful experience! Don’t worry about it being attached to a pub; it is a very family oriented place where everybody behaves maturely and intelligently.

Come rain or shine, you are certain to enjoy your stay. 10 /10!.

We’ve just had an excellent couple of days at this campsite, and I can’t sing its praises enough.

We chose this campsite because we’d just purchased a new awning, and wanted somewhere that we thought would be quiet- so we could take our time practising how to put it up with ample space. So we booked a couple of nights over August Bank holiday thinking we’d avoided the busy campsites. How wrong we were- as we approached the pub, it soon became apparent that a music and beer festival was in full swing! The campsite was near full and a lorry in the car park was the stage to ‘Eddyfest’- a small beer and music festival hosted by the pub that stretches 4 days over the holiday period. Now into its 3rd year, the festival boasts over 50 real ales and ciders, with local bands performing over the entire weekend.

Back to the campsite- despite the festival being on, we were shown a pitch that allowed us enough room for our campervan and awning. The site is basically a field attached to a pub- The White Horse.

The pub is a wonderful old Inn, and prides itself on its real ale- it even brews its own beer, and a micro brewery is under construction behind the pub. The whole complex is under going a bit of a redevelopment- with everything being Eco-friendly. In fact the pub claims to be the UK’s first Eco-pub. There is wind turbine at the back of the campsite providing power, but noise was not a problem. The campsite’s shower and toilet block is brand new, and is solar powered. The facilities are good- although there is only one toilet for each gender, so perhaps a bit small.

Because of the redevelopments going on, it’s not the tidiest of campsites. The field is fairly unkempt, and may not be smart enough for those who like immaculately manicured lawns. But Those who like ‘real’ camping shouldn’t be bothered by this. The field is flat and good for tents I don’t believe there was hook-up available, but that may be something that will come.

The site is located in rural Suffolk, so there isn’t any shops close-by, but Sudbury is only 10 minutes away. On the other side of the lane to the pub is a lovely ‘green’ or park, somewhere for kids and ballgames, and also some beautiful woods- ideal for dog owners and walkers. This is also an excellent location for visiting the likes of Lavenham and Bury St Edmunds.

I give this site a big thumbs up- if you like going to campsites with good pubs you will not be disappointed. The White Horse is an excellent example of how pubs should be adapting to life in the 21st century. The campsite may not be to everyone’s liking- if you like big sites with family amusements’, then this will not be the place for you! But we will certainly be back at some point- and maybe even return to Eddyfest 2008!

We camped at this site with a group of (well behaved!) students doing their Duke of Edinburgh expedition, on a Saturday evening. The weather was absolutely lovely!

This site is very easy to find in Edwardstone, just look for the pub! It appears to be undergoing development, there is a basic toilet block (2 toilets, showers, sinks, hot & cold water) but it appears to be half finished (plasterboard walls, only partially decked outside) and a standpipe for cold water exists outside but it was very muddy! It is, however, functional, and I expect that when finished will be well presented.

The surrounding buildings are all eco-friendly, so it wouldn't suprise me if the toilet block will also be so.

The site itself is a large field at the back of the pub, just over the road is a large open 'common' / field, perfect for ball games!

While we were staying, there was a house about 100yds up the road who had fresh local strawberries for £1.50 a punnet on a stall outside, definitely not to be missed!

The field was relatively even, with good quality ground for pitching tents. The owners were very friendly and helpful. This would be ideal as a getaway for exploring the Suffolk Countryside.
