A small but excellent site that I have visited 3 times. The field slopes in places but getting a level pitch is easy. The showers and toilets are acceptable, plus there are more toilets in the pub.
The site is located in the centre of Princetown immediately behind the pub which is very friendly and serves great food - try the Jail Ale and the steak and ale pie. The village has other pubs, a Dartmoor visitors centre and a convenience store. The Old Police Station cafe serves a good breakfast.
Beware Dartmoor weather. In September, for example, you can be lucky and have glorious sunshine, but you will more likely to have gale force winds, driving rain or thick mist.

Came here at the start of June for a week. The rest of our group (around 30 people came towards the end of the week to stay for the weekend). This campsite seemed perfect for our requirements. Being at the back of a pub which allows dogs meant that if the weather was bad we would have somewhere to go and shelter. However we needn’t have worried as the weather was glorious for the whole week! The campsite itself is a fair size field. It is on quite a slope, but you can find a level spot if you look for it! Unfortunately you cannot park your car next to your tent and you have to leave the car in the car park at the bottom of the field. The busier the campsite is the less easy it is to park your car in the immediate car park. On the Saturday night when the campsite was in full swing we had trouble squeezing our car in. The facilities are very good. There is a children’s play area (which all the mini campers enjoyed playing in). The only downside is that the playground is next to the pub rather than the campsite and is situated next to the car park and the entrance in and out of the pub. The toilets and showers have a key system on them so only campers can use them (however when the pub is open you can also use their toilet facilities as well). The toilets and showers are in good condition. However there is no soap or hand drying facilities (you have to bring your own) and the actual toilets are stainless steel. So that meant that when the showers were being used and the bathroom was full of the steam, the toilets were wet with condensation. The washing up area is located next to the toilets and bunkhouse and had two large sinks and draining boards under cover which was perfectly adequate for the whole campsite. The site owners and the bar staff couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly. The food on offer looked great, I couldn’t comment on the actual costs as we didn’t buy anything from there. However the pub always seemed to have a steady stream of tourists and locals enjoying their fare! There is only a local shop near to the campsite (which didn’t sell very much), so you would have to drive about 20 minutes away to hit one of the larger towns. We found Tavistock to be perfect – as it had many big name shops to allow us to stock up. The campsite is set in a very picturesque part of the country and was an ideal base for enjoying Dartmoor. The campsite seems to be a popular base for kids doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award and also Army Cadets. On one of the evenings the campsite seemed to be over run by Cadets who made a lot of noise late into the night / early morning – until one of the other campers told them to be quiet – which worked! When we return to this area we will definitely come back to this campsite!
