We were so looking forward to our stay at Gilestone Farm after the positive reviews that I read, but were disappointed with what we received.

On arrival, the PIN debit card machine was not working. As I don't carry a cheque book these days, I had to walk to Talybont to get cash-back. Gilestone proclaim that a trip to the village is 5 minutes but its more like 20.

I paid £21 for a premium pitch but could not get the Aeriel to work. I made a comment about this in the shop but the person behind the counter wasn't interested or offer me a solution. The pitch was hard-standing, but to get to the gravel you have to drive over grass. Whats that all about?

The field where our pitch was had long access roads that resembled race tracks. So watch your children!

The toilet block is still in portacabins and look there to stay. I'm not sure what the ladies was like, but there were no locks on the men's toilet doors. The men's showers weren't even connected.

I did complain but made to feel I was in the wrong. I was promised a refund but it never arrived. So I cant even rant about the great customer service others have witnessed.

Gilestone was clearly not ready for the season has to be the worst site I have ever visited. I hope others have better experiences as the backdrop is actually quite stunning.

During a visit in August we were very impressed with the beautiful location of this site and the friendly welcome by all the Thomas family from the oldest to the youngest.

The temporary shower block was better by far that some sites and although we had to queue with tenters occasionaly, the good humour of all made it easy.

The local village's pubs tend to get full at weekends and it's advisable to book early to ensure a table.

We parked in the big playing field where our kids had complete freedom to run around in perfect safety.

What really put the icing on this cake was the discovery that we could leave the van on site. This meant that we no longer had to haul it over the Brecons at weekends, saving a lot of diesel, but also freed up our driveway at home. We made full use of this every weekend since and are grateful to Kris and Gereint for providing static facilities. If only other camp site owners in the locale were as accommodating!

Have stayed at site twice now and personally find it the best site around. Toilet block basic but only temporary, We are hoping that Geraint and Chris will be opening their site for xmas and new year.
A fantastic setting in the most picturesque areas of Wales.
This is a new experience for Geraint and Chris and we wish them all the best and looking forward to visiting again soon. So for all you campers out there who love walking, canoeing boating and visits to wonderful pubs, surrounded in mountains, then we recommend a visit.

We visited this site throughout the year and I would say this is the friendliest site you would ever visit. The owners Geraint and Chris are excellent hosts and will do anything to help.
The toilets and showers are temporary but are cleaned every hour. Next year the owners are hoping the planning authorities will pass the new amenities block which looks superb on the plans. The water pressure was a real problem early in the season but the owners invested in new equipment and this now seems fine.
The site is situated by Talybont on Usk and has some of the most stunning views I've ever seen from a camp site and is certainly the best in the Brecon area. Next to the camping field is the canal which is beautiful . If you go left you can walk into Talybont village about 5 mins, which has a wonderful swing bridge over the canal, then you come to three pubs the 1st is the Star inn which is renowned for it's real ales and serves excellent meals, the second is the White hart which has excellent meals at very reasonable prices and the 3rd is the Travellers rest which did not appear very friendly and the meals are quite expensive.
If you turn right when you leave the site on the canal path you can walk or cycle to Brecon, (6 miles) the views are superb and you cross an aquaduct where the canal passes over the river usk.
There are also waterfalls nearby and some great walking all around the site with the famous Peny fan mountain not far away
Back on the site There is coarse fishing on the canal and trout fishing on the river usk. Next year the carp fishing lake will be open.
The wild life on the site is amazing. Red kites and Buzzards regularly fly over you can see Great spotted woodpeckers, Kingfishers, Swans, Herons and many other birds. In the woods which are being developed with picnic areas and woodland walks there is a badger set which the owners are hoping to provide a hide in the future, so the badgers may be observed. There are also foxes in the wood.
It is unfortunate that the amenities block has not been built for evening get togethers but the owners have erected a temporary marquee and everyone gathers there in the evenings bringing their own drinks. On Friday and Saturday there is a superb BBQ all the meat is locally produced which includes amazing steaks and lamb steaks. These are all wonderfully cooked by Haydn who is a really great guy.
Families are normally given a pitch in the bottom field near to the playfield leaving the main field to adults so everyone is happy. By next year the owners say the childrens play area will be much improved.
All in all this is a great site that will get better as it develops

Nicely located large site near Talybont on Usk. Friendly welcome with guidance by a farmhand to our pitch, one of 150. Beautiful scenery with access to river swimming.Village has 4 eating places but were full every evening so we had to go to Brecon, 6 miles away. May have something to do with this big site with so many people, and a Bank Holiday too.

Electrical hook-ups were provided but the water pressure was a bit low.

Live entertainment was laid on but this continued until after midnight so or kids just couldn't get to sleep. Dogs leaving their whoopsies were also a problem on the very large kids' play area.

We had much the same experience with the showers like other reviewers. There's supposed to be a big new building going up next year with hot tubs, shops, a massage parlour and a bowling alley.

The holiday camp atmosphere was clearly enjoyed by many but for rural peace and tranquility we would not put Gilestone at the top of the list.

Fairly similar to other people's experiences. Site was the top slopey field full of stones and very few flat pitches - a hike to the toilets and even further to the showers down at reception but nevertheless they were clean. Owners were friendly but not too discerning about who they let in - we had 2 nights with a group of teenagers partying in to the early hours using excessive bad language . The owners did respond immediately to our complaints but it did not appear to chasten the group. You get the feeling a lot of money has been spent in a very short time in developing this campsite and hence they will take cash off anyone willing to pay. There were a lot of big groups of people i.e. 3-4 families so the noise level was always going to be high so I would not recommend this site unless you were in to entertainment of the "X Factor" type or you are highly competitive on the battle of the stereo's front. On the positive side the views are beautiful and it's a short walk along the canal to the local pubs.

Just returned from a few days at this site, which is in a fantastic setting, where you can rent out a boat for a few hours, and there are 3or 4 very friendly welcoming pubs in the village. The site itself is very large, with one field allocated for touring vehicles, one field for families and another for larger groups, with a more relaxed feel. This field is especially suitable for groups without young children, and is excellent if you would like to stay up a little later without worrying about an early curfew. However, if you do have children or would like an early night, then there are plenty of other quieter areas you may prefer. The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating, although the showering facilities are quite poor at the moment, especially for the campers. Overall, a very relaxed, friendly site in a beautiful location

Had electric hook up with our tent (£3 extra). This meant we camped in the same field as caravans, so closer to the better facilities.
Staff very friendly. Site well located for walks. Canal walks from the site. Walked to Brecon 2.5 hrs and caught the bus back to the site, (runs about every 2 hrs).

Talybont 10 minutes walk, White Hart pub meant to be better, but closed for food whilst we were there. Star OK, but more a locals pub. Travellers rest more expensive (£18 main course).
Washing up facilities a sink, drainer and cold tap in the field, not covered from the weather. Good idea to take a flask to transport hot water.

Rocky ground, recommend heavy duty tent pegs, we managed OK.
BBQ a nice idea on Friday & Saturday nights. Get to meet other campers, get ideas on best places to go etc. Take your own drink, buy food there.

Didn't have a problem with noise, although campsite quiet whilst we were there. May be due the bad weather when we arrived. Would go back as so well located, would hope facilities improve.

We have visited this site twice the first time on our own the second time with our grandchildren and stayed in the tent field. I dont think I would go back the toilet facilities are poor and no shower. All the effort they are putting into this site is aimed at the caravan users which have a lot better facilities. They do have showers and the toilets are frequently cleaned even though you would think this would be more beneficial to campers. Also kept awake by loud teenagers till 2.30 in the morning not good when you have young children. The area is stunning and views fantastic site requires a lot more work and thought before we would go back
