We booked this site because we only had one night to get away so wanted somewhere local and quiet. We were situated between two birthday parties of kids (approx 8 kids in each party). On arrival it was like entering an overcrowded housing estate, with loads of kids running riot around the place. We hooked up between their tents on the pitch allocated to us (pitches are very close together) They proceeded to run around our van, on our pitch firing high powered water pistols, playing Frisbee and screaming. The Frisbee kept hitting our van. We asked them to move up to the field at the top where there were no vans or tents. The mother of one group moaned and said we didn't like people enjoying themselves! It clearly hadn't occurred to her that we had actually come away to enjoy ourselves too and that didn't involve a group of 16 kids driving us mad for 24 hours. They kept us awake with their noise until 1am and were awake again at 7 am.
Although I understand that the site cannot always accommodate 'requests' of quiet spots due to the site being full. When I booked there were still 3 caravan spots available so why was I put between two kids parties? in fact there was a quieter spot available for the whole time we were there! When I complained to the managers I was told that they didn't allocate pitches until people arrived. I asked what the point was of the 'special requests' box then. The manager replied 'to fulfill requests such as yours when we are not busy'. The manager has advised me to check how busy they are before booking again!
On a positive note, the desserts in the restaurant were amazing as were the shower facilities. The washing up area had hot water.
The bins next to the washing up area were overflowing when we arrived and were still like it when we left the next day.

Spent 6 nights at Westmill farm. Found it very easy to book online. Was texted details of pitch and gate numbers in advance.
Arrived on a glorious BH Sunday and first impressions were of a lovely site. A little odd to get to via a garden centre but then down the hill and to a field with wonderful unspoilt views of the countryside.
Unfortunately our designated pitch was already taken due to someone overstaying but a quick phone call and all was sorted very speedily.
Lovely large pitch with water close by.
There are two toilets and washing up facilities right next to the field but the main block was up the hill. Not a problem though and the showers were lovely. Free hair dryers. Lots of space all around for the kids to play and we all had a long game of football with our neighbours on BH Monday after a BBQ.
Didn't use the restaurant as it looked a bit pricey. There's also a high ropes and adventure area, again pricey, but looked good if that's what you're in to. Kids and hubby went golf one afternoon and said it was a nice course. Brilliant views from all around the site. Lovely walks around the lakes. Lots of places for the kids to cycle.
All in all we loved the site. The only problem we had was noisy neighbours the following weekend - there was no control on the noise levels late into the night. I am not one for breaking up the fun but I drew the line at 2am! Perhaps a set of rules for groups would be a good idea?!?
Being local to my husband's work this is a site we will definitely be returning to.

Great little site used as the dry run for us as only 10 miles from home. Staff were all very helpful. Lovely restaurant over looking the lakes facilities kept very clean although the shower block is about 200m from thE camping field there is a closer toilet and washing area right next to the campsite field. Great for walking or cycling from. Site is located amongst cottage industry stile units with a good soft play area for young children. Main down side was when pitching tent at the side of our van we should have used rock pegs. Our site was serviced with electric/water and tv Ariel point will definitely be returning

Visited this site again, on the spur of the moment, on the way home from another location, just fancied an extra night. Pulled up and went into the restaurant to book in - the staff member was friendly and helpful. You get allocated a pitch, but the one I was given was occupied - even though there were only three other units on site - so I just went elsewhere, which suited me as I chose a nice spot which caught the setting sun, and was also lovely and sunny in the morning. I will mention they charge per pitch and the cost covers two people - it was £18 so a little expensive perhaps when you are by yourself. They charge £2 per kid, so it would be £22 for a family of four, about average. It was a Sunday night, and I arrived at about 6pm - only afterwards did I notice that the restaurant shuts at 7pm on a Sunday, so worth bearing in mind.
I used to visit this site regularly before the big refurb in 2011, before then it was just a basic field, no facilities, but lovely views of the lakes from the pitches. When they refurbed it they moved the camping / caravanning into a different field - this one has no views - and the first time I went back I was quite disappointed at this. However, on this second return trip I've decided the site is growing on me again. Okay you don't have the view anymore, but the lakes are still there just a couple of minutes away, for lovely walks and beautiful scenery.
The site has marked out pitches which are a good size. They have planted bushes between most of them, and once mature this will give privacy and screening from other campers, at present it's a bit open. There are some hardstandings, which are a bit rough and ready at present, and a mixture of flat and sloping pitches. If you are in a caravan or motorhome, bring levellers, you will probably need them. For tenters there are some flat pitches, it will be worth asking to make sure you get one. Most of the pitches have EHU points, and the hardstandings all had water too. There is good lighting around the site.
The new shower block is lovely, underfloor heating, large cubicles for showering and toileting and was very clean. The water was warm and powerful, although they are the dreaded push button showers, so you can't adjust the temperature, or change the direction of the flow. The shower I used in fact had two showerpoints in it! It's a bit of a trek up the hill to the new block, but they have now completed the small block adjacent to the camping field - this one has a toilet for each sex, and an undercover washing up place. This is handy if you need the loo, you don't have to stagger up the hill. The washing up area was clean, and the water nice and hot.
The new block will also house the reception eventually but that's not open yet ( at time of writing Sept 2011) It's been mentioned that the access road to get to the camping field is a bit rough, and this is the case, but it's not terrible and easily usable, I've seen a lot lot worse.
I stayed with my dog - dogs must be kept on leads on the camping field, but can be let off on the other parts of the site. The farm covers a huge area, with lots of different fields, and several lakes, and the dog and I thoroughly enjoyed some good long walks. You just need to make sure you don't upset the fisherman on the lakes by letting your dog disturb them, mine is very good, but bear this in mind if your dog tends to go up to people when out. The lakes are very popular with fishermen, and they are huge, with masses of pegs, so if you are into that you'll be in heaven.
I noticed they have now allocated a large area next to the camping field for kids ballgames etc, and have erected some goalposts and a badminton net here. There is no playground, but plenty of space for kids to play. At the other side of the farm they've done loads of development, and there is now a high ropes aerial park which looked fantastic, and zorb rolling if your kids are into that sort of thing. It's a 10 - 15 minute walk away around the lakes to get there, so you'll probably need to go with them though for this. There is also a huge radio controlled car race track and a nine hole golf course. All these things are run I think by outside companies, so you will need to check for availability and pricing etc.
I didn't visit the restaurant although I had fancied a cider after my long drive, as it was shut on the Sunday evening, as I mentioned before. It seems to be open the rest of the week though, so if you fancy something to eat or drink it's a nice option. The restaurant and beer garden have lovely views over the lakes. You can take your dog into the garden, but not the bar / restaurant itself of course. They also open for breakfast and lunch by the way.
All in all a nice stay, albeit for one night only, on a Sunday when hardly anyone was there. I will be back.

Sometimes, just sometimes, you stumble across a hidden gem of a campsite, Westmill Farm fits into this category. Easily accessible from the A10, the route to the campsite leads you through a number of retail [cottage type] units, past the Lakeside Restaurant. At this point you start your decent into the little known Rib Valley and you get your first glimpse of the 'three lakes' down in the valley shimmering spectacularly in the late summer sun.
On the campsite you have a choice of hard standing, mainly level serviced pitches or take your pick of the not so level non-serviced, grassy pitches.
Dish washing, chemical disposal facilities and ancillary toilets are situated at the bottom of the site with the main shower block a short walk away at the top of the field; the standard of these facilities is first class and could maybe be equalled but probably not bettered. Maybe just one small critisism, we thought that the hardstanding pitches were in need of a little TLC, remove the weeds and tidy the gravel although it should be remembered that this was towards the end of the season.
Other facilities provided at Westmill Farm include fishing, golf and an adventure playground, all 'extras' but reasonably priced.
Needless to say we will be returning, the lure of the big rainbow trout in the Millenium Lake being truly irresistible.

We are relatively new to Caravanning but so far we have stayed at a few very nice caravan sites. Unfortunately this was not one of them. The site seems to be an after thought, being on a field located down a badly upkept track.
There had been a lot of rain on arrival (not the fault of the owners obviously!) and as the site is on a fairly steep slope it was very difficult to make it to our pitch. We actually had to receive assistance from the other campers who helped to push our car and caravan up to the pitch while I continued to wheel spin my way up the hill. Needless to say, the car and caravan were absolutely filthy. This was all after I had spent 10 minutes finding out how to book in at the site (you have to speak to the girls behind the bar at the restaurant apparently - not the building marked reception!).
Our pitch was a hardstanding, although I would argue this was not really the case. The pitch was a small square of uneven gravel with grass and weeds growing through. Once in position we didn't have enough room for our small porch awning and I wasn't able to move the caravan again due to all the mud.
The site was noisy and everyone was crammed together despite there being plenty of available space. Come 11pm I had to go and ask a group of youths to quieten down so we could get some shut eye (I'm not a kill joy, but I was tired!). There was a light right outside our caravan so people were using the small piece of 'hardstanding' outside our caravan door to walk across to access the facilities.
The site is under the flightpath for Luton Airport and there are noisy roads within earshot as well. All in all, a very unenjoyable experience.
One positive - the fishing lakes at the site are very pretty and make for a nice little walk. Oh, and the facilities are clean and modern - just be prepared for a long walk up a steep muddy field to access them.

This was the first time I have used this site and only because it was convenient for Stansted drop off and pick up. The cost is higher than many sites but worth it for a weekend stay I my opinion. Other sites were full so the cost may keep campers away, maybe the owners are going for exclusive.
The toilet and shower block are new and although at the top of an incline its not as long a walk as other would make out, around 200 metres and is suitably light for night time visits. I didn't see the new toilet and shower block near the camping field until the last day, so cannot comment on them, but would imagine they are of the same high standard as the main block
The electrical hook up and water bollards with their own light, aerial sockets and drain where conveniently positioned, the pitches spacious and although the field is on a slight incline, it was not something to cause problems.
The lakes are well looked after and peaceful, the restaurant was very nice and popular on the warm Sunday lunchtime, but with sufficient outside seating for good weather. The cream tea's where very good with a great view looking over the par 3 golf course, lakes and aerial adventure area.
The staff were friendly, very helpful and the whole site very well thought out and I fell the only thing missing was a farm shop selling local produce.
Other campers and myself agree that the camping field would have been better with a view of the lakes, but you cannot have everything.
We will definitely be returning again this year and in the future (without dogs so we can use the restaurant, golf course and fishing properly).

First visit and pleasantly surprised by this somewhat quirky site which appears to be a work in progress.
On entering the complex you pass timber clad buildings including a fantastic fishing tackle shop, art shop, furniture shop restaurant, function rooms. You also pass a racetrack for miniature remote control cars, a garden centre and an outdoor activity centre as well as a 9 hole golf course. Follow the camp site signs and you head down hill towards fishing lakes and the camp site is just before them.
The camping field has marked pitches with some cinder/hard-standing pitches, newly planted shrubs and plenty of hook ups. Most of the pitches slope to some degree but we chose a hard-standing that had been levelled. The shower block is back at the top of the hill and a fair walk. From the camping area. However there are two brand new wc cubicles and a single wash up next to the camping area.
The shower block is brand new, very swish and the water was so hot I could barely stand under it. Our children found it too hot with no apparent means of adjusting it cooler. However it's almost worth visiting for the shower block alone.
The setting is very picturesque and there are three lovely fishing lakes. My son paid £5 for a day permit. We will certainly head back for a weekend stay- especially when it is fully opened. We may even try the restaurant - which looks pretty flash. You could certainly hold a very nice wedding in these grounds and have a place for all your guests to stay - in tents!
At the time of our visit the newly built reception was not open and there did not appear to be any supervision as to the comings and goings on the site. I went to the restaurant to pay the day we were leaving. For a pitch and two adults it was £18. We had to pay an additional £2 for each of our three children so quite an expensive stay at £24 in May!

I have been to this site in the past and my previous review still stands as far as the local attractions, activities on site, location etc.
What has changed is that they have spent a load of money developing a new field for camping and stopped using the old one. Fair enough, but the new field is still sloping, however not too much and manageable.
They have put in quite a few electric hookups and each pitch has its own water tap and light on the bollard.
The pitches are a good size, well all except pitch 4, this is by the current entrance and you really would struggle to get anything much bigger than a 4 berth tent on it, let alone your car and chairs etc. Once they stop using this entrance, this pitch will be a good size.
As the site has only just been finished, the ground and shrubs planted are still a long way off looking good, but this will happen over time.
The biggest couple of downfalls for this new field is there is now no view over the lakes, you used to have a stunning view stretching for miles, but this is now blocked by trees and the only spot on the field offering a view is at the top and this is now off a farmhouse and its outbuildings. What a shame as the view really was one major pull for this site.
The have built a fantastic and luxurious new toilet block, but this is located at the top of the hill and is a very long walk up there. There is lighting so doing this at night is ok, but it is a long way. I used the toilets that they provide for the fishing visitors, however these toilets are still very grim, but did the job.
The new block are push button type and non adjustable heat and could do with a curtain. There are plenty of hooks in the showers and they are to a high standard. Toilets and sinks plentiful and all good.
They are currently also building a new small toilet block, near the camping field, making it easier but this was not finished when we visited.
They charged us £18 for one adult and one child, in the campervan. Extra adults and kids costs more making this a pretty pricey site for us if I wanted to go with all four members of the family and dog.
I would go again as this is local for me. For anyone visiting for the first time they will most likely love the views etc. But having seen it before, I was somewhat let down by the new field.
