Another visit to one of the best sites in the South West. Well kept site, spotless facilities, friendly wardens and owners, free table tennis, (chargeable but only £2 an hour) outdoor tennis court, reasonably priced shop that will order fresh bread and croissants and your daily paper.

One change to previous visits is that wifi is no longer free. £12 for per device for a week, I think it was £36 for multiple devices for a week. We didn't bother and tried to rely on solely 3G, (Virgin Mobile), which was pretty pitiful on site. (The only negative).

Great pitch, 88. Close to the facilities, fully serviced. Can't fault the pitch.

Totally recommend the pub for food at Denbury, The Union Inn. Unbelievable meal. Costly, but superb, chef deserves a compliment.

The pub at East Ogwell, 'The Jolly Sailor', served a great pint, had friendly locals and had Sky TV - useful for watching the footy and walkable from Dornafield - as is the pub at Denbury.

Locally there is loads to do, Totnes, Dartmouth, Stoke Gabriel is beautiful and a great place to go crabbing. Some great beaches within 30 minutes travelling.

Anybody that likes to run, the lanes around Dornafield can provide some good circular routes, although can be a little scary when you meet traffic. They are very narrow in places.

Yeah, access to the site is what you expect. It's rural and it's Devon. I rate myself as a novice tower, and although slightly concerned I'd meet somebody coming the other way, I did, and there was no problem. Just don't arrive early as meeting a fellow vanner coming the other way may prove difficult.

I rate the site 10 out of 10 overall, but it is expensive, so value for money can't be high, but, in life, you generally get what you pay for and Dornafield is no exception to this rule. I adore this site, it fully deserves all the positive reviews, and I will be back again in the future.

Lovely site, can't really fault it. Pitches are good. They look a bit close as you drive in but when you are on them they don't feel it and have some screening hedges. Own water supply and hook up and even had own bin shared with one other pitch. Lovely area.

The facilities are five star. More spa like than shower block. Need twenty pences for hairdryer though and pounds and twenty pences for the washing/tumble drying so make sure you have plenty if you want this facility.

Free wifi but was very sporadic. Shop selling basics and can order fresh croissants for breakfast from here. Beautifully kept site. Two off lead dog exercise areas were brilliant. The one we used had a large enclosed area that then led through to another field on a steep slope with a pathway cut through the grass all round.

We did a nice walk through country lanes to Denbury and visited a lovely pub called the Union Inn which is dog friendly and the food looked lovely.

Would definitely go back. The only problem was it was so good that the next site we went to I didn't like because I kept comparing it to Dornafield.

 Facilities:

Toilets and shower blocks are clean, tidy with lashings of hot water and even at the peak times there was no queing.

My wife used the laundry and was happy with the quality of the wash and the price, however, the detergent is automatically dosed into the machine – which on the plus side means you don’t have to buy a box! But it may be an issue if you are allergic to some brands.

There are microwave ovens available for use, we never used them – but a fellow camper was telling us that these were coin operated and he had issues heating his food.

Pitches:

Our tent was pitched in the Orchard, and out pitch was massive and quite flat, as were most in the field.

The electricity hook up is 10A – so if you are used to 16A you might have to be selective on what you have plugged in.

Shop:

The shop is adequate and carries a small selection of provisions and some camping accessories plus a selection of small toys sweets and ice-creams for the kids! Having to order bread etc for the next day is quaint, however, there is a small CO-OP in the village of Ipplepen and some larger supermarkets a few miles away in Newton Abbot.

Leisure:

The kids loved the 2 play areas and the games room as well as there being plenty of room for them to run and cycle around the site and make lots of new friends.

While we were there, one night per week, Morris dancers entertained – for my wife this was the highlight of our stay.

Other comments:

The staff were all helpful and friendly and their laid back attitude was quite refreshing.

The only real negative from my point of view was the free internet – the signal was very poor, and although there are 3 different access points around the site, most of the time it did not work. I’d rather pay for a service that worked.

We only tried one local pub – The Wellington, Sunday lunch was a ”take it or leave it” carvery, the prices were very good – just not our cup of tea!

The nearest beaches were all shingle with the odd bit of red sand – excursions to sandy beaches were at least a half hour drive away

Would we come back? Yes

Just returned from 6 nights at this gem of a site. The pitches are level and generous in size. Yes, manoeuvring on and off can be a little tight but once you are on there is ample room all around you. The whole site from the minute you drive in has an air of relaxation about it. It is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The fully serviced pitches are fabulous and the toilet/shower blocks were bright, clean and well positioned for everyone. All the staff were very friendly, helpful and super efficient. Shop was well stocked and open all day. Newspapers and baked goods (Croissants, rolls, scones etc) were ordered each day to be picked up the following day. Lots of children around as you would expect but we found they were all more than occupied (including our 8yr old daughter) in the lovely play area and wooden fort so weren't charging around the pitches as you find on some sites. A very enjoyable holiday on an ideally placed site for exploring South Devon, and we look forward to returning here soon.

 Visit Again?

Yes, definitely, but probably more suited to Caravan users

Customer Service

Excellent. Very warm welcome even though we arrived after reception had closed. We had pre-booked the use of an additional mat as we were pitching on a Caravan pitch rather than camping field as they had no tent pitches available.

Peter provided a recommendation for a restaurant for an evening meal (20th Wedding Anniversary) which was first class. Many thanks Peter – appreciated.

Location

Location excellent, just off the road between Newton Abbot and Totnes. Take care when entering and leaving the site, as the short road has a number of sharp bends with blind spots – its fully navigable just take a little extra care.

Site

One field allocated to tent pitches (we did not pitch here as there was no room on our arrival date). The field is sloping and undulates in places and only has a few pitches with electric hook-up

The rest of the site is set-up for Mobile Caravans, with very well maintained pitches majority of which are fully serviced (water, drain, electric and even TV points). At first it can appear a bit claustrophobic as each pitch is quite close, though you get used of this once your settled in.

Pitch

Flat, hard core, well maintained Caravan Pitch, but with the use of the additional matting, made for nice pitch, for a tent snuggled in between the caravans. With water, electric and drain to hand, cooking was a breeze.

Facilities

Good stocked shop on site (order fresh bread and papers one day for the next), fully covered wash-up facilities, tennis court and a pub about 2 miles down the road (not tested).

Toilet Block

Very clean (has won “Loo of the Year” awards), nice relaxing piped music in the form of Radio 2. Showers are located in a physical separate area from the sinks and toilets, which can have some pros and cons depending on your view point.

Showers – while plenty of hot water is available, they are push button and don’t stay on very long. Also the shower heads are fixed at a height based on someone of around 7’ tall and due to the type/ set-up of the shower head, produces a “cone” effect in terms of water flow, resulting in a morning “shower dance” to get the water on your body. Nevertheless were sufficient in their function.

Near by

Newton Abbot has a Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s with easy access via the one-way system. Also has one road with a selection of take-aways including Indian and Chinese food. We had a Chinese Take-Away one night which was good.

About 7 miles away is Totnes – lovely little town and would recommend the Steam Packet on the river for food and drink. Totnes also has a Morrisons so all-in-all your cover for all your major supermarkets withn a 7-10 mile radius of the site.

Maintenance

Excellent, grass is cut as and when needed (near enough every day) and cuttings are collected. Toilet areas always impeccably clean and paths and roadways well maintained.

Please don't ever visit this site as I want to keep it just as I found it. On a 'in week during school time' break for a few days the site is well laid out, quiet, and peaceful. Yes, it is in the countryside so you do get farm machinery until the late hours occasionally but hey, it's a working countryside. I was staying in the Orchard which is a very pleasant copse / field. Pitches are generous and reasonably flat. You should be able to find good ground on all ofthem. Saw a couple of Outwell Montana / Bear Lake 6 sized tents and these were comfortable on the pitches. Shower blocks / loos / washing up area. Astounding. Never seen anything like it before. Very, very impressive. Small shop stocking the essentials, but plenty of big supermarkets within 3 miles. Very friendly staff, always happy to have a chat. And yes, some of the approach roads are small, but you just have to be a bit careful, that's all. There's plenty of passsing places

Very easy access from Bristol. 1/4 mile of lanes with reasonable passing spaces. Upper field where we stayed was very good. Facilities were faultless. We wanted a slow departure so asked if we could drift into the afternoon before packing up. As pitch was not let for that pm, we only had to put an offering in the charity box to stay a few hours more. Everyone running the site were friendly with a smile and a wave as we passed. Fish and chips 2 evenings a week on site and a shop with essentials (wine, bread etc. ). Will certainly use this site again.

We stayed here recently for 5 nights and as always had a great time. It's such a well kept site, the owner and wardens are so friendly and are always on the go, this shows throughout the site from the general cleanliness around the grounds to the shower block.

We stayed on Blackrock Copse pitch 66, plenty of room around the caravan, nice and even pitch.

I disagree with the reviewers that state that access to the site is difficult, I have a twin axle caravan and don't have any trouble entering or exiting the site, a little care needs to be taken but you would do that anywhere. Don't let this put anyone off visiting the site.

Overall this gets my 10/10, we love it and will be headed back very soon for 2 weeks :)

Our first visit to Dornafield. Great site stayed in Butter Meadow, very nice fully serviced pitch. Site and facilities are really good, clean and modern, yes the access road is narrow, but the site is really peaceful with loads of wildlife. Distance away from main Newton Abbot / Totnes road helps keep site really quiet. Site Shop very well stocked and organised. Owners and staff friendly. Will definitely return.

Fantastic site. Fantastic staff. Fantastic facilities. Fantastic for kids. Fantastic area.

Yes the approach road is narrow, plenty of passing places & remember this is Devon with all it's rural charm.

The site shop stocks all the basics, plenty of supermarkets with good parking in Newton Abbot.

Peace & quiet are the order of the day.

This was our tenth visit & we're already looking forward to our next trip!
