Our niece has been on at us to give her a try at camping, and as we only live 2 miles away from Hollingworth Lake, we thought we'd try here in case things went pear-shaped and we needed a sudden drive home! We also chose this one because fires are allowed.
The site has a great location with many, many things to see and places to go within a small radius. There is a pub (The Beach) that does cheap and cheerful food, with a beer garden, on the other side of the lake. The Wine Press, a 5 minute walk away, is a more upmarket bar and restaurant and I'd recommend it highly. 20 minutes wallk would take you to The Waterside, towards Littleborough, which does fantastic food. There are several cafes by the lake, too. Nearest shopping is either Littleborough or Smithy Bridge. You're close to the train line running Manchester - Leeds. There's a horse riding stables close by.
The site is great, separated into several areas. All staff were very friendly, visible and helpful. We didn't use the shower block, what with going home in the morning, but used the toilets in the field. They were basic and kept as clean as possible by staff. There's a playground close to the site, but not belonging to it. There's a very well stocked shop on site, too.
I like the 'pitch-where-you-like' approach, but it leads to my only gripe. The fact that it's seems to be ok to leave your car anywhere alongside your unit means the field gets a bit higgledy-piggeldy, with some people parking their cars too close to other units. Also, people arriving in vans left those on the field too, which looked unsightly and spoiled the view across the field.
Not the site's fault, but a lot of the children here this weekend (especially those by us) were very noisy, and not shhhhed by their parents (who were, in fact, just as noisy). They played in and around their tents rather than off in the field or playground. We went to bed around 12 and the party next to us soon after, but they didn't quieten down for a while. I just think they didn't realise that a nice quiet voice is enough.
At £14 a night with electric, we'll definitely go back, as it's a nice site and handy, but we'll be careful to pitch in a corner.

Spent a wet bank holiday weekend at this site, it is quite a basic site, but this is reflected in the price, with a pick your pitch policy, the first field we were sent to only had a pitch next to the toilet and bins left, but we were told that we could go in a different field which was much better.
The toilets were clean and well stocked with rolls and Adam emptied the bins regularly! Although the showers in the old block are 20p and really only last 6 mins, the new ones are better but you need to buy your tokens before the shop shuts. The staff were very friendly and the girls loved the horse riding with the stables attatched to the site.
The area has some great walks and bike rides. The children enjoyed the play area near the lake and playing in the river.
Will definitely be back to this site to explore the area some more.

My self and five year old daughter, my friend and his six year old son, stayed on this site for 1 night as a test to see if our children would enjoy the camping experience. We had a great time and met some lovely people. We are already planning our next visit.
The campsite is close to the lake, the facilities are nice and clean. The camp staff are cheerful and friendly. We would definitely use the site again.
There are nice country walks, shops near the lake, a nice park nearby and the lake itself is lovely. We had fish and chips for dinner in the cafe and it was wonderful.
There are horse riding facilities/lessons nearby from 10 pounds (you may have to book in advance) check when you book! it is my daughters first camp and she gives it 1,000,000 out of 10!
There was a few midges flying around at times, but it is the country side and its all part of the experience!

Stayed here with several friends and family in what can only be described as horrendous camping weather 50mph winds and torrential rain there was only one other group foolish enough to stay.
The site was initially busy however the vast majority packed up and left when the rains came,
As for the site there are two large fields with a pitch where you like policy, great when in a large group with several tents and caravans
There are lots of electric points scattered round the outside of the fields there is two toilets on the camping field in an old steel container and a 'proper' toilet/shower block by the main reception which also has a small shop.
There is a play park at the side of the campsite although this doesn't belong to the campsite to get to it you have to walk off the site so not suitable for young kids unless supervised, it was put there with lottery money I think.
Nice walk round hollingworth lake and the beach pub was very nice for food very reasonably priced
Overall its a fairly basic site but good value for money. We enjoyed this site more for the people we were with rather than the site itself. Would stop at this site again but only if in a big group

Just had a weekend at Hollingworth Lake Caravan Park. Have to say we had a great time.
We were in a group with 5 motorhomes. Booked on and they let us use the paddock. The owners couldn't have been more helpful. They even coned off an area of the Paddock so we could be together. The lady has a wickedly dry sense of humour which I loved. Had a right good natter with them both and found them very amiable.
6amp hook up and with fresh water, waste water and Elsan point in easy access. We never used the shower block but was told that they were clean and tidy but one of the showers wouldn't turn down and was too hot. These are token operated by the way.
The site is well placed to get a walk around the lake which is approx 3 miles around. Good cycling around the lake as well for adults and children. Wild life in abundance especially for bird watchers.
We visited the Wine Press on the side of the lake and all had a great meal. Even though the place was packed and they told us there might be a wait, served our food without fuss. Would definitely go again.
All in all a great weekend despite the weather.
Just note that there are no children or dogs allowed in the Paddock area as the owners have had complaints of noise from the residents in the Park Homes area. So if you wanted to be together with your friends and they have dogs or children you wont be.
One disappointment, and not with the owners, were that some ignoramus had emptied their cassette down the waste water grid and not down the Elsan which is clearly marked.
It looks safe for children but having not taken any with us, I cant comment further on that.
We liked it that much we have rebooked for Oct.

We had a couple of 'first' weekends here as newbies to Motorhoming.
We thought it was a great little site; well located for pedal-bike rides, walks, strolls and taking it easy for a few days. The facilities were all quite OK, TV reception adequate, people very friendly and helpful. We did stay in the 'Adults Only' paddock area rather than the main touring field. Hook-up power no problem. There are a number of local camp and caravan clubs which use this site regularly on a separate field before the enquiry office.

Just returned from a weekend with our friends. We have used this site quite a few times and it used to be a welcoming site. The electric hook up as got worse than ever, we couldn't even boil our kettle, they say its 6 amp but I don't think it is. Not really fair to say it has electric when you can only use a light bulb
The toilets had no toilet roll. The prices have gone up. Its a shame really as its in a perfect spot with lots to do nearby and the weather was great, so we still had a good weekend
We always recommend this site to our friends and new campers but don't think we will be doing any more

This camp site is in a lovely area, near lots of lovely villages, nice for bike riding. We went up into the hills going towards the viaduct and into the hills, the views are lovely, and after an hour walk we arrived at the reservoir, and went to the bulls head pub which is a welcome break after a long walk.
Hollingworth Lake is very nice with lots of walkers and dog walkers walking the lake. We had a meal in the Beach pub at the lake wch was really nice and very good value 2 for £10.
Upon arriving at the site we were directed to the small field in a horse shoe shape, this small area seemed to have a lot of permanent touring caravans with working contractors who working locally.
If I was to go again I would definitely ask to go on the large field which was very nice. The toilets next to the shop was nice and clean with a charge of 50p for a shower token.
This site is well worth a visit but do be careful upon entering the site as the road is very narrow with a ditch on either side, and if you get an inconsiderate car driver coming in the opposite direction who wont let you through, it can be very difficult to reverse with the caravan on the back.

Spent the Royal wedding Bank hol here and had a fabulous time the toilets/showers very clean. Shop on site sells all the basics that you need and there is a co op 5 minutes drive away. The owners were really really helpful nothing was to much trouble they even came to see us off when we were leaving and asked if we had enjoyed our stay which we did, so much so that we are booking again for May Bank Hol

Spent the Wedding bank holiday weekend here and had a great time. The price is spot on at £14 per night over the bank holiday which included ehu but at 6 amp, it doesn't like big kettles or heaters, but is enough for everything else 1200 watt or under.
The owners are lovely and were very helpful. The place was busy but there was still plenty of room between pitches.
The facilities are adequate and the showers cost 50p but you need to buy a token from the shop on site for them.
For the price you cant go wrong but you cant please everyone but don't be put off by negative reviews and give it a try.
