Previous visits to the area have left me wishing for a campsite at Talybont, as the pubs are excellent and the village is at the foot of the mountains. When I saw this site advertised on the website I decided to give it a go, despite some pretty mixed reviews. We found conditions to be still pretty much as described by other reviews earlier in the season, the showers are still scolding. We were charged £15 for two adults in a four man tent, which represents poor value for basic facilities. The ground was also very hard and stony, a rubber mallet was useless. The owners are friendly and took action against some very noisy campers, which I'm afraid will be attracted to this location. Gilestone looks a better bet for caravans, but I wouldn't recommend it for tents this season unless your really keen on a Saturday night out in Talybont.

After a cheerful welcome from owners, set off to pitch our tent in the top field. We normally take about ten minutes to pitch our tent but forty minutes and at least fifteen bent tent pegs later managed to erect our tent. The ground looked good, but three inches beneath the grass must have been rock. We found the site very noisey and people were still partying at 2.30 in the morning. It says no noise after 10.30 but no one seemed to be monitoring it. The camp was very busy and toilets were not the cleanest we have seen. There are four toilets and no showers on the top field. You also have to share these toilets with the meadow next door which had a private party on site. You cannot park your car on the field but have to leave it in the car park next to the toilets. The surrounding area is lovely and the walk to the local village and pubs are easy. The shop on the site covers the basics. It needs more improvements to be made before we would consider going back.

Arrived late(ish) on Friday for a weekend break and received a warm welcome and an invitation to a barbecue. The owners were very keen to explain where the facilities were and directed us to our pitch which was close to the playing field. The pitch was quite spacious but only 10A so for anyone who likes drying their hair while watching TV, eating toast in a nice warm caravan, beware.
There is no play park for kids, there is only a single small wooden playhouse inside the playing field but that doesn't seem to worry the kids. The toilet and showers are temporary (some sort of issues with planning we were told) and there were always queues to use them and when I eventually managed to get to the shower the controls did not work, so I couldn't get showered unless I wanted to scald myself! Many of us had the same experience. The water pressure on site is very bad, and it took 15 minutes to fill the aquaroll half full on Friday evening.
The shop, again in a temporary wooden shack, is very small and doesn't stock much, but it's adequate if you are prepared to make do. The chemical toilet disposal point is a single affair, right down in the corner of the site and can be quite a walk from the furthest corner, so take a trolley.
After all my minor gripes it is still early days for this site as it only opened about 2 mths ago and we had an excellent weekend. I would recommend it to anyone as long as they are prepared to put up with a few minor inconveniences. Next year this site should be one of the best around. 10 out of 10 for the owners commitment and co-operation. I've stayed on far worse sites and very few better ones. If you are in doubt about whether to book or not - go for it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The friendliest welcome I have received at any campsite! Only been open for 5 weeks but have everything in place and organised. We stayed in the camping field (separate to the main caravan park) but still close to facilities and with the bonus of being right next to the Brecon & Monmouth canal so great for canoeing, walking the Taff trail or base camp for some long walks in the Beacons and black mountains.
Good level site with good pubs just a few minutes walk up the canal. Can get busy at weekends in high season but never felt over crowded. Toilets and showers are functional as problems with planning caused by another local campsite owner have hindered the sites plans to erect the permanent facilities so the tempoary structures can suffer a bit when busy, although don't let this put you off!
A great location and given a few months to get the new facilities block in place will be one of the best in the area.

We stayed here during the first week of opening. This is a family run park and they were very friendly. The site is in a great location and I would recommend a visit. The facilities are temporary ones, so therefore not overly spacious, but are clean, however the plans for the permanent facilities building is on show and its looks very impressive. The normal pitch sizes are quite small, but as we had no one either side of us, this didn't matter, however I would book a super pitch next time. Also during our visit they were preparing the playing field, which is a large flat field ideal for games etc. The on-site shop which was well stocked sold pies, curries and other things that were made locally, from local ingredients and tasted great. Brecon is a short drive away, and the Breconshire Canal is a short walk from the campsite. We had a great stay, were made to feel very welcome and will definitely be going back.

What a great site. A great welcome from the whole Thomas family. The site is in a stunning location , with panoramic views. Good facilities, and when the new toilet block opens next year it will be even better. Farm shop is well stocked, nice to see so many local products sold. As a family we would recommend Gilestone to everyone.
