As instructed, I booked on line and received confirmation within 4 hours. On arrival there is no reception, shop or even a phone number, you find a space and pitch. Two nights later the owner did the rounds and charged £7 per adult.

The site is in the bottom of a shallow, dry valley so it gently slopes on both sides and is level at the bottom. Mature woodland affords shelter and shade and the grass is well maintained.

There are two toilets nearby but it's a short walk down the track to the main toilet/washroom block. These are functional. The showers work well and the plentiful hot water comes without further charge. There are no shaver points and the place needs an overhaul. However, they are kept clean, there are good washing up facilities (bowls and detergent provided) and the loo paper is the most luxurious I've ever found at a camp site!

Alfriston has many pubs and restaurants. I found the George was the best for atmosphere, food and beer. Unfortunately I had a bad experience in the Old Smugglers Inn (aka Market Inn) since the beer was rubbish and I was short changed too.

If you like walking you've picked the right site here. The trip down the valley to Cuckmere Haven, then over The Seven Sisters (actually there are eight!) to Birling Gap, is breathtaking. The NT Pub at Birling Gap is good but just beaten by the Tiger at East Dean. Close by, the walks over Beachy Head and Windover Hill are worth the effort.

An ideally sited, very laid back, friendly site (no caravanners!) allowing camp fires with no silly rules and regulations. Some may find fault with the lack of facilities and condition of the washrooms but if you want these, look elsewhere.

Had a great time camping at this place, what a nice, relaxed atmosphere, lovely surroundings, would definitely go back there again. Very simple place, no need to pre book.

Very close to seaside and shops. The Village is very pretty.

Facilities are best described as 'basic' but you have all you need - showers, hot water, WC

Roy was friendly and helpfully with giving information

Highly recommend it for anyone who is not so fussed about facilities on campsite and there to enjoy themselves and explore surroundings, will take my friends camping to this place again.

We had a very pleasant stay at Alfriston Camping Park and would definitely recommend a stay there.

The site is situated within strolling distance of the very Pretty Villge of Alfriston nestled in the beautiful Sussex South Downs Countryside.

The Site is run in a very informal manner and although it may be a little disconcerting not to be able to book by phone if you want to book last minute actually Roy is very quick to reply and we turned up a day early without any problems.

The site has basic but very adequate facilities with very hot water constantly which is surely all you need! They also looked like they were adding further ammenties closer to the main field.

They also allow open camp fires (with fire bricks supplied)which is a lovely addition to the outdoor experience!

It is a great site for kids with no nearby roads and there's a lovely stables very close by that offers Horse riding for all levels and ages. It doesn't offer any play facilities but that just encourages them to enjoy running about more!

The site is also great value with £7 adults Children over 5 £5 and little ones free.

The Village is very pretty with many lovely teashops and pubs serving lovely meals, a pretty church and a 14C National trust Clergy house. Although the village doesn't have a lot of grocery shops the village post office offers a variety of local produce and cash back (very handy!).

The local area offers numerous opportunities to take in the Beautiful Sussex scenery and coastline with great walking, whilst also having Drusillas on the door step (great for kids and use your tesco vouchers for even better value) and Eastbourne and Brighton within a 30 minute drive.

Had 3 nights here over the jubilee weekend. An extremely informal site that seems to be a favourite of group campers. It seems to be our luck that there seemed to be a few particularly noisy groups plus Duke of Edinburgh expeditions so we had party noise until midnight then the DoE boys and girls packing up and setting off very early.

That aside the little one had a great time in the woods that are either side of the site. You can feel confident that you can let your kids off the leash as there are no roads to worry about.

Facilities are pretty cobbled together and best described as 'basic' but the water is hot and showers perform well. There are nice touches like washing up liquid and cloths provided by the sinks, but it is let down by silly things like having no hooks in one of the shower cubicles.

Roy is friendly and helpful and the local village of Alfriston is postcard pretty with good friendly pubs and cafes.

Drusillas Zoo is very close by and well worth a visit. They have some very interesting animals in excellent enclosures and there is plenty to keep the kids amused with extensive play areas.

£10 per adult and £7. 50 per child per night seemed a bit steep given the general state of the facilities.

Would I go back here? Probably yes, but it would be certain if only the facilities could be just a bit less rough and ready.

 What a great location!

Situated on the outskirts of Alfriston and just a few minutes walk from all the village facilities. There are some very good walks straight out of the campsite.

The site itself is relatively basic and the facilities could be busy over a bank holiday weekend, for example, as there are few sites in this area of the South Downs.

The performance of the facilities varied over the 3 days we were there. On Friday night and Saturday morning there was no hot water whatsoever but by Saturday afternoon things were back on track. Whilst the showers had a homemade look there was no doubting their power and heat - most welcome after a very long walk!

As mentioned by other reviewers, there is flat ground available in the middle of the field and sloping ground to the edge. The valley does tend to funnel the wind but this wasn't a problem. Being on the South Downs Way, the site is popular with DOE groups and they were present during our stay. The teachers also stayed overnight so there was no noise 'after hours'.

The village has some great pubs. For beer and good pub food, we recommend the Smugglers Inn. The George is a little more foodie and also had great beer. The most attractive looking pub, The Star, did not seem popular and received no recommendations from locals.

Prices for camping were £7 per person per night.

This is a very basic site, perfect if you like rough camping with campfires.

The toilets and shower facilities are basic. The toilets in the camping field don't have lights, so be prepared with a torch!

We were there for a very wet weekend, and the route to the showers was treacherous: very muddy and slippery.

It is not a 'professional' campsite, you just turn up and pitch. There was no one there when we arrived to explain what to do. We had to pay cash when the man drove round to our pitch.

A big plus about this site are the tennis courts. The kids played there for hours!

I'm not sure if I'd want to come to this site again. We had fun as we were with a group of friends, but the actual site, although in a lovely rural setting, is very basic and could be cleaner.

Very nice, really close to village, easy to find a spot for the tent and lots of room for cars.

The road into the campsite does get really muddy and it is quite difficult to drive down due to holes in the road but not a massive problem. Take a torch if you are going to be out late as the walk back up the lane at night is pitch black!

Relaxed, helpful management and very reasonably priced. We did find it confusing at first as there wasn't a 'reception' but we were soon welcomed by the staff who approached us at our site. Loos and showers clean and pleasant. There are tennis courts and horse-riding on site.

We stayed for a weekend, great site perfectly placed for a stroll into Alfriston.

Basic facilities but clean.

When we went it was particularly windy but only on the site. When we went into the village there didn't appear to be any wind at all. As the site is at the bottom of a steep hill. We'd have to revisit to see if it was a one off. Make sure you strap your tents down in case.

Lovely walk onto the downs from the site. Lovely pubs and restaurants and the first National Trust house they bought. Gorgeous gardens - house steeped in history.

Would definitely revisit this site again.

What a great place to stay! We stayed a couple of nights mid week and were lucky with the weather. The site is very clean, as are the toilets they are also well stocked with loo roll, the showers have lashings of hot water with plenty of space to keep your clothes dry. The washing up area is clean with a few sinks and again lots of hot water.

Roy was friendly and informative of the area. The field is a 'pitch anywhere' and we chose in the middle on the flat part, around the edges it has a slight slope and we also didn't want to be under trees.

We went just after the school holidays and apart from five other tents spread over a big field we had the place to ourselves!

The village has some lovely places to eat and a shop that sells just about everything. There are some other lovely shops to purchase a gift or two. The surrounding area has some wonderful walks and lots of wildlife.

We would definitely return to this site.

We have just spent 10 nights on this lovely campsite in our converted school bus.

Our stay took in both Bank Holiday weekend and the weekend before and although the site was very busy there was plenty of room for everyone. We have always had caravans before and tended to stay on CL sites so this was very different for us but we LOVED it!

My 8 year old granddaughter came with us and had the time of her life, so many new friends to play with we never saw her! It was lovely to sit on an evening watching everyone starting to light their camp fires.

This is a well kept site in a beautiful valley. The facilities are excellent, very clean, loads of hot water, toilet rolls provided, washing up facilities and plenty of portaloos dotted about too.

Roy the owner is very welcoming and helpful. The Riding Stables made it extra special for my granddaughter and again the girls who take the lessons are brilliant with the kids.

We will definitely be going back soon and probably time and time again.
