My wife, and I recently stayed at Brockwell Wood for 6 nights with our three young children (under 4). We really enjoyed our stay, and would love to return. The clearings are well spread out, and apart from one evening we didn't hear any other campers at all.
Steph and Mike (owners) were very friendly, and exceptionally helpful. They helped us to get set-up, giving us a hand to put up our tent, and get a camp-fire going.
We weren't to sure about the idea of wild camping with young children, and mainly choose the site for it's quietness, and proximity to Beamish.
We're so glad we stayed here though, the site was so peaceful, and camping in the woods with camp fires was a fantastic experience, which our children loved. I can't recommend this site enough. We all had a fantastic time.

This is a real find.
I was after a back to basics campsite for a weekend away with my 2 sons aged 6 and 4, where we could build fires, explore in the woods, make dens and chill out. This fits the bill in every way.
The owners Steph and Ike are lovely, friendly and go out of their way to make sure your stay is as good as it can be. The pitches are varied in location, whether you can drive to them or need to walk through the woods and can accommodate a range of party sizes from 1 so several tents. The caveat to this is that there are no facilities at all - you are given a map to your suggested pitch (although you are free to choose another if they are not busy), a shovel to dig your toilet, a saw to cut up wood for a fire and a water carrier. Then you are on your own! The damage is £8 per adult and £4 per child over 5.
I have to admit I have never done this type of camping before and it took me a couple of hours to kick back and enjoy it. But a fire on and a gin in my hand and the boys clearly having a whale of a time and I was sold. And then for much of the weekend I have never been so relaxed.
There are issues. About once a month people just pitch up and camp and make a right racket without booking in and paying. However the pitches are so far apart that even though this happened on the first night, and in the pitch closest to mine, I was barely aware. I also had to kick a group of teenagers off my pitch who settled there with their drinks, loud music and bad language and didn't seem to realise it was private land. But Steph came straight up to back me up and get rid of them (they were gone before she arrived). While this was an annoyance it didn't detract from the peace and the enjoyment of getting back to basics.
We came home after 2 nights filthy and smelly with a car full of filthy camping stuff. But very very happy. Hopefully it won't be long before we are back!

Fantastic back to basics camp site, just what real camping should be all about. You get a spade, saw and water on arrival to dig your own toilet and saw the wood you find in the forest. Sites are very well laid out with lots of trees around for privacy.
Steph was not there to greet us on arrival but left good directions from a map, which all added to the experience. We had an amazing experience and will return for 2 nights in the Summer hols.
Would recommend to all types of families as fun for all age groups.

WOW What a GEM of a campsite. Each camper is given their own numbered pitch. IN THE WOODS! away from everyone else. So relaxing!
We helped ourselves to the fallen wood to light a campfire as we were told was fine to do (unusual to be allowed a campfire). We were greeted on the evening and morning by the site manager to check we were enjoying our stay.
This is a site different from most others as you are safe on a farm site. But alone in woods, . MAGIC! As long as you don't mind going to the toilet with a shovel. Which is another experience! haha Cheers Brockwell Woods for offering something different :D We'll be back!

This place is fantastic! First time camping with our 2 boys aged 7 & 5. We wanted a real camping break and that's exactly what we got.
You get a spade (for toilet), saw (for fire wood), map/rules from the very friendly owner when you arrive.
There are cleared areas amongst the beautiful woods for your tent and the groundsman pop passed to say hello. No electric but you can collect water from the main house.
Great if you want away from all the bright lights and noisy people/citys. Not sure if I should leave a review or not. (don't want everyone finding out about this gem of a place!)

A previous review causes some confusion with new visitors to this site - the wood is lovely and there is plenty of wood to light a fire, but you can't really make as much noise as you like, you have to be considerate to other campers and nearby residents.
There are a few rules to sign up to - no loud music, no shouting or disturbing other campers, keep to your own site, especially after dark.
Clear up after you, don't damage any live trees.
It's common sense really, so that everyone can have a great time camping in a beautiful environment.

After wishing for a night away without the children and a chance to relax with some friends and let off some steam we chose here.
The campsite was amazing, right up my street. We were left to it and deep in the woods. The owners had left us a saw and a spade to gather our own firewood and dig our own toilet, it was real back to basics natural camping.
It was brilliant and we had a fantastic night, we were away from other campers and felt like we had our very own little retreat, I was sad to to leave, we will definitely be returning.
I Personally hope to return with my children so they can see what real camping is like and not be able to use all the amenities that you find on many campsites these days.

Had 1 night here in July, we are a young group of people so sometimes have trouble getting into places. We were greeted with a warm welcome, lovely owners.
A nice drive through the fields and down the track to find our own little site.
There were others on the site but we never heard them, its like you have your own private forest. The surroundings are lovely and there is plenty of wood around to use for the campfire.
Highly recommended if you don't mind not having a toilet and shower block. We will be booking up for next month!

Just came back from this campsite, and as we are only 26 its hard to get into any campsite, but when we got to this one the owners were really nice and gave us a really nice welcome. The woods are amazing and there is so much wood that people can use for the camp fire. We are going back in 2 weeks as it was a good weekend away. We were allowed to make as much noise as we liked. The only thing is people need to respect this campsite as it is the woods and has been well looked after.
