Despite previous comments about this site, we felt we would only made welcome if we were a regular ie two or three times a year that's how we were made to feel when we stayed there. The facilities are ok just one shower for men and one for women, there is nothing on site even the dog walk is the other side of quite a busy road. There is nothing in the village no shop or pub the nearest being about two mile away.
|
Management response: We are sorry to hear that ‘Bendog’ did not enjoy their stay at Poppyland and we would like to respond to a few points made in their review.
The 2 mile distance to shops stated in the review is incorrect. The nearest shop off site is just half a mile away (Groveland Farm Shop). Beyond that a neighbouring village, a 1½ mile away, has a shop, pub, post office, petrol station and chip shop.
Bendog complains about there being nothing on site, there is in fact a little shop with basic provisions on site. They are quite right, there is no club house or any other form of onsite entertainment but at no point on our website or any other advert do we claim there is nor do we claim there is a shop or pub etc in the village of Thorpe Market. Poppyland is a quiet and tranquil adults only site in a rural setting where guests come to relax and unwind.
Bendog’s review gives the impression there are only showers on site and no toilets when in fact we have a heated shower block with 2 showers and 4 toilets which is perfectly adequate for a small site. We also have laundry facilities, washing up area, microwave, fridge/freezer, tv, maps and local info etc etc on site.
With regard to regulars on site, we are very fortunate that campers choose to return time and time again to Poppyland and of course, we get to know them over the years and chat with them. We also had relatives staying on site at the same time as Bendog who, obviously, we spent time with. It was difficult to strike up much of a conversation with Bendog or spend much time with them as every time anyone walked past or went near their pitch their dog would bark.
On the subject of dogs, perhaps this is the true nature of Bendog’s gripe with Poppyland. After several complaints from other campers about the incessant barking and general exuberant behaviour of Bendog’s dog, Pam had a friendly and courteous word with them. They were obviously unhappy about the complaints, this was made all the more evident by the finger gesture made towards Pam (seen by another camper) as she walked away after talking with them. We simply cannot allow the behaviour or 1 camper/dog to ruin the enjoyment of others on site.
At this point, we would like to stress dogs are truly very welcome at Poppyland, we are dog owners and lovers ourselves but dogs on site must be well behaved and kept on leads. Obviously they are going to bark now and again but we cannot allow it to such a degree that it disturbs other campers.
Credit where credit due though, after Pam’s chat with Bendog, the dog was almost silent. What a shame they hadn’t exercised this level of control in the first place! Archie is a beautiful dog but perhaps to take on a rescue dog some 2 weeks before a caravan holiday was not the wisest of ideas.
The public footpath for dog walking, as Bendog quite rightly mentions is across the road and is literally opposite Poppyland. The road is a 30mph zone. Again, at no point have we claimed the dog walk to be on site.
We are totally pro honest reviews, they keep campsite owners ‘on their toes’. It is important that guests should be able to share their experience but these should be done in an honest way, without bias and without bearing a grudge. |

We were struggling to find space on an adult-only site at very short notice in peak season. I am very glad that we called Poppyland and were most impressed when the owner warned us that the pitch available lost the sun after 3 o'clock. It's most unusual to be given such information when booking and we were impressed. We explained that we wanted to enjoy the sun so were offered a smaller pitch which turned out to be perfectly adequate for our needs. We intended to stay a couple of nights but extended our time there as it is such a pleasant quiet site with friendly, helpful owners, a bus stop right outside and easy access to good routes around Norfolk.
This was our first visit to the county as it is a long drive for us but we really loved the area and will certainly return.
We have a 7 metre can and were able to park at Holkham where there are lots of walks, cycling and an award winning beach; at Cromer and at Holt which is a delightful town. Next time we will visit the National Trust properties and walk more of the coastal path. It is an unspoilt county with much to offer visitors and Poppyland is an excellent site.

This was our second visit to Poppyland. We went last year for 5 days stay, and have just come back from a two week holiday and was not disappointed.
Pam and Billy go out of their way to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. The site has an adult only and no tent policy so it mainly has the more mature visitor.
The site is well set out, and even thought it was full the pitches are spacious enough so not to feel hammed in, and site itself is like a lovely big garden. Billy seems to be on it most days mowing, gardening and cutting back trees !
I would recommend that anyone going takes time to read though all the lovely comments because it's exactly as described !
Thanks again Poppyland Pam & Billy - see you again next year !

We stayed at this beautifully kept site over Easter. As we had not visited Norfolk before we did not know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised. Everywhere we visited during our stay did not disappoint. Mundsley, Overstrand, Sheringham, Holt, Felbrigg Hall and our personal favourite Wells-on-Sea were all beautiful and unspoilt. I can definitely see why people retire to this perfect place.
We loved everything about Poppylands and found it to be spotless and peaceful. Pam and Billy were both very friendly and helpful and gave us lots of information on the surrounding area and recommended places to visit.
The site had a really nice personal touch and the on site shop was perfect for milk and late night snacks.
We were a little worried about there only being one shower each for both male and female but during our week's stay I only had to queue once and all facilities were always spotless.
The only downside is that it is a four hour drive for us but we will definitely be back to this little gem of a site.
Even our border collie cross Holly didn't want to come home. We will definitely be back next year!
We also loved the on site chickens which were very well looked after and Pam and Billy's dog Millie was lovely.
Keep up the good work. Xx
|
Management response: Please note the chickens are not loose and wandering around the caravan site but live free range in our garden which can be seen over the fence from the caravan site. They are all pets, all named and full of character which is why Craiglyn01 liked them so much.
We do have one occasional escapee called Dorothy who sometimes wanders up the field but on the whole they are all contained.
Thank you Craiglyn01 for your great review of Poppyland we are really pleased to hear you enjoyed Norfolk and your stay at Poppyland.

There is not too much more to add about Poppyland that hasn’t already been said. Its beautifully maintained, the owners are friendly but unobtrusive, its spotlessly clean and the pitches are spacious and flat. Here are a few useful bits and pieces about the site and area that may not have been mentioned. Sat Nav access –when we were about 4 or 5 miles from Thorpe Market our Sat Nav tried to take us down a single track road so beware if you have a large unit. There are many other routes to the site so we just found the next likely looking route on the map. Access is good apart from that although the turn into the site coming from North Walsham is really sharp (they do mention this on their website). It is dog friendly, both ourselves and our Weimeraner Ziggy felt very welcome. However, if like Ziggy your dog would like to catch his own chicken dinner- beware the wandering chicken, Dorothy. We had a couple of hairy moments with Ziggy literally straining at the end of his tether drooling as Dorothy waddled just out of jaws reach. Not really an issue but we just needed to be extra vigil lent of her whereabouts. The dog walk across the road was convenient and quite rightly there were several notices around about scooping and bagging. There was also a poo bin at the top of the lane. We thought it was a shame that some people didn’t pay heed to this and use the facility. The site does have a little shop which works on an honour system you just take the items you want – they are all priced – and pop the money in the box. It seems to work really well and is well stocked especially with chocolate and ices creams. The site is very well located for all local facilities- the nearest supermarket is Waitrose which is less than a 10 minutes’ drive. Sainsburys Superstore in North Walsham is just another 2 or 3 minutes further on. The other way – 4 miles from the site is Cromer with Morrisons, a huge Lidl and a town centre Budgens. There are loads of good restaurants and we really enjoyed the Vernon Arms in South Repps – good value home cooking. We went for Sunday lunch but only just got in –so probably best to book. The fish and chip shop in Roughton was great- lots of choice fish wise and all freshly cooked. There is a large seating area outside which was nice on a lovely September evening. We are real curry fans and did have a problem finding a decent Indian. We did sample the Indian in Aylsham which was average but we enjoyed the take away from Al Haaqui in North Walsham. The whole North Norfolk coast and its outlying villages are really beautiful and coupled with great weather – our holiday at Poppyland was fabulous. It’s a great base as everything is within easy reach and a its lovely site to come back and relax in after a day out and about. We will be back next year – its well worth the 400 mile drive.

Our first visit to Poppyland. We stayed on the Bank Holiday weekend so the site was full but because of it's layout it didn't feel busy or crowded.
Booking was simple and the owners very helpful, finding the site was easy and access good although as others have mentioned drivers using the road outside seem unable to see the 30mph limit sign (such a shame and something that local councils need to address). Despite that busy road we were amazed that the site was so peaceful, no road noise carried through. Location wise the lovely Norfolk beaches were very close by and bus available outside the door.
Our pitch was grass just inside the gate and worked well for our 6 berth motorhome. Hook up was close so no issues there and although close to the toilet block this didn't cause any issues. Lovely gardens with nice touches of benches and chairs made this a very personalised site.
Facilities were perfect for us, clean, efficient and charming with lots of homely touches that sets these individual sites out from the more corporate and clinical look and efficiency of CC sites we've stayed on. Fresheners in the toilets, spotless sinks and good flushing loos. Really interesting literature and leaflets in the cabin plus a nice selection of provisions if you need them.
The owners were attentive but not overbearing and quick to help with a minor problem we had and also a more general situation that arose on the site. Their customer service is the best I've encountered.
Being a dog owner local walks are important and although there was a footpath walk across the road the village didn't come across as particularly dog friendly in my view with warning notices on the village green. With few pavements the options of where to walk were quite limited. The site itself was very dog friendly so no complaints there although my greyhound wasn't so impressed with the large gravel on the drive - but that's greyhounds for you.
Only other negative would be where the water and grey water disposal is situated meaning you have to fill up with carry cans or as we did borrow the site's extra long hose, and you can't empty your grey water tank straight into the drain but have to collect and carry in cans.
However these little things are minor compared to the overall excellence of this site which the owners take such pride in and should feel extremely proud of.

Just returned from a lovely peaceful week at Poppyland. Pam and Billy the site owners take great pride in their site. The facilities were kept spotless all week and there is lovely touches to the toilets and shower room. There is a fabulous cabin with lots of information about the surrounding area. Pot washing area, washing machine, microwave, iron & ironing board, also a TV. There are supplies for you to help yourself to and pay for via an honesty box, ice cream fridge and chocolate in the fridge, this we thought was a lovely touch. There is a regular bus service to Cromer, Sheringham and surrounding area, the bus stops outside the camp site. If you want a peaceful well kept site with nice facilities and lovely owners this is the place. If I was going to say anything negative it would be that another shower each for both men and women wouldn't go amiss. Would definitely return.

We have just spent 5 days at Poppyland and it wasn't long enough!
The whole experience of our visit was pleasant right from the booking, the owners and their site are lovely! Our hard standing pitch was allocated to us on arrival, we were quite happy with it as it as there was plenty of room for our 24ft caravan, large car, awning and room to put chairs on the surrounding grass.
I would describe this site as staying in a large well kept garden of a country cottage. There are large trees surrounding which actually protected the site from the wind. The grass was immaculate, in fact we were amazed it stands up to the traffic on site as it has!
The facilities follow the same 'cottage' feel - 1 shower and 2 toilets for female and the same for the gents, both kept beautifully clean and tidy. I would presume that most people (like ourselves) used their own facilities as they never seemed to look busy ! There was a 50p charge for the shower which must reflect in the site fees. A nice touch we thought was your order of a newspaper delivered to your caravan every day.
For those staying a little longer, there is use of a washing machine, dryer, communal use of a microwave and a fridge/ freezer, and a dishwashing area. The owners also have a few provisions for sale for those emergencies !
There are plenty of pubs in the surrounding villages (not in Thorpe Market)- unfortunately we ran out time to try them! A bus stop is out the front gates, so there would be no problem with transport for the larger motorhome or if you just wanted to leave the car behind.
We have 2 dogs so it is important the sites we pick are dog friendly - we were not disappointed. There is a footpath across the road (complete with poo bin) and everyone who had dogs on site had there pets under control and unobtrusive to others. We went on a different beach everyday with our dogs, and generally found the area quite dog friendly.
The owners have done a lovely job with Poppyland and we will both recommend it to others, and will definitely return!
