Just arrived back form a lovely weekend at Setthorns. We stayed there 17 years ago and it hasn't really changed much at all - but that's good! There are no loos / showers which I admit I would prefer to have on site but it's worth putting up with that for the beautiful scenery, lovely walks and peace and quiet! Our dog has had so many long walks he's come back an inch or two shorter! You do not need to take the car out as all the walks can be made from the site or opposite. A lovely pub 'Hare and Hounds' near sway, very nice food! The only thing I would moan about is that I did not come across any dog waste bins on site - there really should be as there are lots of dogs around! all in all 10/10!

Fantastic. There are only electric hookups here and that suited us perfectly, really peaceful. Brilliant with the disused railway track running through, ideal for children cycling and walking etc. Nice pitches although you can't prebook. This means driving around until you find one which can be a pain sometimes. Well worth a visit and we will certainly be going again. The pub in Sway I think called the coach and horses or the hare and hounds! sorry can't remember the name did nice food. It is out of the site turn right and down the road until the end and turn right and then it is on the left.

Arrived early evening and had trouble finding a hook-up in the dusk.
A good site to hike and cycle from, many tracks and lots of good views. No chance of bordom with a wealth of local towns and villages, hidden pubs, horse riding not too far away. The sea!
You then return to magnificent tranquillity amongst the trees of the old forest.
ADVISE get there early but once settled enjoy!

Is site was VERY EXPENSIVE. This is a no facility site and you need your own loo.You need rock pegs as the ground is very stony and a good mallet! Would be helpful if you were warned about this before arrival! The office did sell rock pegs and toilet chemicals.
The site itself was lovely amongst the trees many pitches situated in clearings to ensure privacy even in busy periods. You could walk straight out into the surrounding heathland which was stunning, or cycle out along the old railway line that runs through the site. It was enclosed and did not have views being very much in the woodland and shade. Facilities, IE the tap and septic disposal points were well maintained and easily accessible. Hook ups were available. Rubbish was removed daily, no recycling facilities on site. The wardens were new and not to the standard that I have come to expect from the C&C club and were rather offhand. Not awful, but just had this feeling that my presence was an inconvenience to them. They did mishandle some newbie campers who made a mistake and just survived a dreadful first night and were cold and tired. They were just not tactful, it was a confrontation that could have been avoided and left the couple upset. I notice there was a supply of second hand paperbacks in the site office presumably for sale or loan and loo fluid and rock pegs. You could also book forest warden walks and activities from the site, we did so and thoroughly enjoyed two walks, deer watch and forest foods. Restful informal site and other campers were delightful, kids that were a pleasure to have around, considerate and polite. Nearest milk in Sway, no shops on site. Supermarket could be found Lymington. Good range of farm shops in the area. Lots and lots to do in the area…. Would I recommend. Yes, lovely site. Would I go back?? Not sure, it was pricey, possibly out of season.

What a special site! So peaceful, surrounded by beautiful forest with ponies wandering around, birds chirping and a really happy feeling. We were on a pitch near the road, by a big old oak tree with a resident Wood Pecker! we had stunning views of the forest and felt very relaxed, it was also great that we had lots of trees giving our pitch almost total shade from the hot hot sun! No showers or toilets of course, but the back to nature happy feel makes up for that, although if done in sympathy with the special surroundings I think some toilets/showers would make Setthorns even better, as after a day at the beach you could do with a shower. Loved the fact that Setthorns is also close to lots of New Forest villages and nice beaches, all in all it was very nice, and I feel we will most likely be back!

What a lovely site, we found it very peaceful, the only sounds were from the birds chirping. You can choose your own pitch and they are really spacious. The wardens were very helpful. We loved the walks through the forest and it's a great place to visit if you enjoy cycling and the kids loved it! We enjoyed it so much we extended our stay for a couple more nights and will definitely be returning in the near future.

You must under no circumstances go to this site - you must leave it to us!! In winter it's cold, windy, wet; wet horses everywhere, wet cows, wet pigs and wet dogs - in fact everything gets wet - except us. Don't worry, leave it to us, we'll look after it. Don't bother to come, everything will be alright, we'll manage on our own...... oh, ok, you can come for a visit, but you must be quiet, otherwise you'll disturb the owls! Do we like it? What do you think!!

We've just returned from the most relaxing camping break we've ever had so far. Apart from the stress of not being able to put in any tent pegs on our Dandy awning, ROCK PEGS NEEDED, it was lovely to wake up and only hear birds, even though the park was fully booked for bank holiday weekend. The pitches are well spaced, we were on standard, the site managers were lovely and the setting was amazing. For a back to basics holidy this has got to be the best site in the New Forest. We've already booked to go back in October!

February 2005 One of those little gems for those wishing to get away from it all. No shop, club, swimming pool etc just electric hook up with water and waste facilities dotted around the site.
We stayed on a "select" pitch. This gave us a good deal of distance between us and nearby vans. Pitches are not in regimented neat rows and instead are far more natural and surrounded by trees with nothing but the sounds of birds.
Civilisation seems a long way away ..as do supermarkets so be sure to take lots of provisions with you!!

2003 We like Setthorns because you can pitch down amongst the tree's or up on the gravel pitches, also for the fact that it's open all year (very pretty in winter). There is also a disused railway that runs along the site which is perfect for taking the children out on their bikes to see the horse's, there is also plenty of gravel paths that are used by cyclist's rambler's and horserider's.
The local village is about ten to fifteen minute walk. (very nice pub!)
