This was our second time camping, first time camping and being able to have a Firepit.
We had a great 3 days, the firepit really makes the whole experience of camping. I thought the pitch sizes were really generous, there is plenty of room for upto 8 tents possibly, it was not as loud as I expected after reading some of the reviews on here, I was worried as we took our 1 year old son, but it really wasn't a problem, all noise stopped after 10.30pm the latest. The toilets and showers could have been better, but I wouldn't let that stand in the way of going back and there is a toilet block closer to field 5 now I assume as it was literally a 2 minute walk, we are looking forward to returning again soon. I highly recommend this campsite.

Debden House campsite is surrounded by the beautiful Epping Forest - most tent pitches have direct access into the forest. This proved a real boon on the weekend when we were there when the heavens opened - under the trees it was virtually dry. This meant that the kids in our party had something to do even when it was raining. Collecting firewood under the shelter of the trees was lots of fun. Another plus of this site is the fact that each tent pitch has loads of space and at least in field 5 is separated from the next person with a low embankment. You can have fires and it is quite magical to look around the big field and see lots of little fires twinkling.
This campsite does have some definite downsides however. The toilets and showers are pretty grim. The nearest toilets to the firefields are in a portaloo and very dirty. The showers in the main block had lots of grass and mud and people using them just left their rubbish on the floor - empty shampoo bottles etc. Unfortunately it seems some of the people who were there that weekend weren't very considerate and were into partying. Late at night there was one group of people who drove at high speed round the field in a four wheel drive truck dragging, yes dragging someone behind them on some sort of blow up thing. They seemed to be having lots of fun at the expense of the rest of us. The fact that small children were playing football etc in this field didn't seem to phase them.
If you don't want to travel far from London and want a fire but don't mind roughing it this site is for you.

First time camping for me in England, we picked the May day bank holiday renowned for rain - and it did ! - the saturday was glorious sunshine though. Great pitch field five with fire pit which was fantastic, very back to basics camping. 3 families in all we had a great time, kids loved it as did the adults. They could run free fly kites play rounders plenty of room with direct access from each plot into the forest itself. Toliets on field 2 got rather grotty though but we were equipped with a porta loo. We could not find a water point in field five however we had children to collect and a van ! Field five was alive with music fairly late us included, so if its quiet time you are wanting choose another field. It was a party type atmosphere which suited us as we were celebrating a 40th birthday! The staff were friendly pretty much left you alone to camp, although they did patrol often. Sunday it rained but didnt put us off there were plenty of logs on site to collect for the fire. We created our own 'forest walk'on sunday and ended up in Theydon Bois turned left at the wrong tree however we found a posh pub that was rather expensive and didnt apreciate bonfire smelling customers we found our way back to camp and cooked our own . Great weekend we have booked again

Just thought we would add a review as there doesnt seem to be a recent one. Went for the first time ever camping on the last bank holiday weekend and camped in field 5 where we had a fire pit. Great fun for all and a good introduction to camping although it turned out to be an extremely wet one. Went again the following weekend (30th May 2008) and camped in field 2, a stunning field with fire pits. Stayed for 2 nights and the kids were afforded the sort of what seems now as old fashioned freedom. They were off exploring for hours, wonderful. The staff here are great and easy to overcome booking problems with (which we had both times of going), couldnt tell you about the showers as we didnt use them but the toilets are fine. Also dont worry about bringing wood as there is an abundance already cut for you, stored at the bottom of field 5. Have fun.

Did a Friday and Saturday night with friends in the fire field (field 5). The fire pits are great fun and add to the atmosphere but it is a noisy site with little or no staff enforcement of the 10pm noise curfew and the "no amplified music" rule was completely ignored. Fine if you are in the party mood but don't come here for peace or tranquility!
There is also a significant slope across the top half of the field and as others have mentioned the toilet blocks are a very long walk (or more likely a drive!) away. No good if you have young children. Field 1 is next to the main toilet block and cafe and there is a play area with climbing frame etc as well as some farm animals (pigs, goats and poultry). Having two young children we would probably use this field next time, even though you are not allowed fires there.
Epping Forest Visitor Centre is about 10 minutes drive away and has a series of walking maps (at 30p each) to suit all abilities, including a paved walk for those with prams / wheelchairs and the staff are friendly and helpful. There are also plenty of ID charts for plants, insects, birds etc (about £2.50 each) to make the walk more interesting.
Also there is a chip shop and parade of shops Just beyond the clay lane turning - you will pass it if you follow the brown roadsigns for Debden House coming from Loughton.

Just came back from our first visit at Debden. The fire fields are brilliant and added to the atmosphere - which was one of a true camping spirit. We didn't book - just turned up, rather late, on a Saturday afternoon - about 6ish. We had the pick of the fields - and chose field no. 5, although field no. 7 looks tempting. The fields are surrounded by Epping forest and the fires are fueled by the dead wood from the forest. This has to be collected by yourself, which adds to the camping spirit. Didn't check out the showers, so can't comment on the cleanliness of them. The on site cafe was adequate, serving breakfasts and basic dinners
The only thing down side of this camp site was the singing, screaming and shouting, from some of the tents (one in particular) which carried on until about 4am!
However, the natural beauty and fire fields of this site, has made us thirsty to visit again. Highly recommended!

I love Debden Campsite and although there are now big restrictions on the use of the fire fields I have always enjoyed my weekend stays wih both my kids and my friends and sometimes all of them at the same time!
We enjoyed our summer evenings and couldn't wait for it to get dark so that we could light our camp fire and be children also! There is normally a big crowd of us that go and book our tents all in a row so that we can all be together and have loads of fun. The youngsters love the freedom of their own tents and the adults enjoy the "space" too. Facilities in the fire fields are non existant but then hey!.........that's what camping is all about.
The toilets are all located in the first field, one block being by the main entrance and the other block being in the corner of the first feild leading onto the second field so if you have a weak bladder and won't wee anywhere else then I suggest you camp in the first field! Debden Campsite is brilliant and we have always had loads of fun no matter what the weather has been. My one critisism is that the "shop" is really poorly stocked for the amount of people that visit the site which is a shame so maybe the campsite will take that comment on board and review what they sell in the shop........please!

May 2005 Just got back after a great weekend. However things have changed at Debden. We phoned to book but were told that they didn't take telephone bookings, so we turned up on Friday afternoon to be told we could not go where we wanted. ie the fields with fire pits. They have changed their rules since last we were there. You now need to bring a copy of your car insurance, photo ID and a child to go into the firepit fields. Yes I did say a child, apparently, adults can't be trusted on their own and need the stable influence of a teenager or toddler.
I was surprised but left my partner to argue our case (we had no insurance documents with us and only work ID and no kids), we should have been told all this when we rang. The manager was reasonable and knew the person we had spoken to on the phone (thankfully my partner remembered her name) and raised his eyebrows, but it still took half an hour of negotiations to resolve the problem. The manager did say that you CAN book in advance.
The pits are now allocated and numbered so you can't pitch were you want.
As for the showers, they may be free but there was no hot water all weekend and they are in need of some TLC.
As I said we had a great time and I would recomend this site for its location. We had the field to ourselves all weekend. You may want to bring a big pot for hot water and have a washdown in your tent. I also advise ringing to book and to check what ID and insurance details they require.

July 2004 I visited the site during the summer of 2004. Despite many parts of the fields being on a slope it is possible to find flat and quiet areas during midweek. The showers were free and clean. However the weekends are something else as large parties group together light very large fires (with the accompanying smoke) and sing well into the night. I will look forward to going again, but not over a weekend.

September 2003 What an excellent place this is.
It does get a bit busy but Sunday nights are good when everyone goes back to work and school.
It is a large site with several fields so you can always find a bit to suit you.
Being near London (30 minutes from central to site) it makes a great place for Londoners to go and chill out. In fact it must the most culturally diverse camp site I have ever been to. Some campers just go for a day, with whole families setting up BBQs and playing music. A great atmosphere. As you are near London it is not stressful to get to and if you forget something, you can go back and get it!
It is a beautiful site and it does feel that you are in the countryside.
One of the best things about the site is that you can light fires and being in a forest there is plenty of wood that has dropped on the forest floor-the children (and adults alike) love collecting the wood.
It is true that the showers can be a bit grotty but on the plus side they are free. There are seperate toilets for men and women and they are cleaned quite often, plus loo paper is supplied.
Check it out and make up your own mind.
