Just returned from 4 days at this site and had a great time.

The site isn't perfect so I'll get the bad points out of the way first:

1. Most of the hard-standings are part of one large gravelled area, which was a bit like an A-road layby - not very pretty.

2. The site had a very pretty gift shop and a great cafe but it didn't sell any basic provisions (bread, milk etc). The friendly site staff said they could order 'stuff' but that isn't much use if you've just run out unexpectedly.

Otherwise, it was a very good site; good facilities (showers, toilets, laundry, washing-up bit all spotlessly clean) and excellent for kids. Two good-size adventure playgrounds, a little train, small lake with easy walks and a small covered play area for toddlers.

The on-site cafe is very good; pretty cheap (kids sausage and chips for £2.50) and good quality. Can get quite busy and, bizarrely, opens for 'breakfast' at 10am! Obviously, these people don't have kids.;-)

Locally, the big draw is obviously Longleat (10 minute drive) and it is a great place (worth getting the passport and going over 2 or 3 days to make the most of it).

Several superstores nearby (Sainsbury, Morrisons, Asda) and several good pubs (we recommend the Three Horseshoes in Chapmanslade).

What a lovely site, we only used it as a base when we went to Longleat but I would highly recommend it. Very friendly, helpful staff. Lovely clean site, modern toilet and shower blocks which were always clean. On-site shop and cafe and lots of activities around the site that unfortunately we didn't get to try.

Great for kids, lots of open space and playparks. Our pitch was a little boggy but only to be expected in October with all the rain we had.

Lots of local pubs, the one we tried was excellent and child friendly even in the evening.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at Brokerswood.

We were extremely lucky given the time of year and enjoyed 2 beautiful sunny days.

We were pitched along the outer edge of the field, next to the main road. We did notice some traffic noise but its to be expected. The pitch size was tight for our large tent, but we fitted in with room for the car right next to the tent. The pitches are close together but most people park their cars between tents to offer some privacy.

The facilities were good. A small covered pot washing area with 3 sinks, and free hot water.

Male and female toilets/showers. The female toilet blocks with 4 cubicals and 2 showers (shower head type showers, with a curtain that is draw to protect clothes) There is also the 'shower' block which has 3 toilets, 3 showers (with a semi enclosed dressing area) and 3 sink cubicals as well as a baby changing area. The showers in this block were wall mounted and the pressure was a bit rubbish so not as good as the showers in the toilet block. There was also 2 family rooms and a disabled shower room. We didn't use these so can't comment. To use the family room you had to book a 1/2 hour time slot. All showers offered free hot water and weren't on a timer. There was hand soap and toilet roll in all toilet blocks. Hairdryer for 20p which lasted long enough to dry my hair.

On the campsite there is play toy in the shape of a train, which my girls both enjoyed playing on, and was nice there was something for them to do when around the tent.

The pitches were on grass but most had dirt patches in the middle which I could imagine would be very muddy in bad weather. As it was we went after days of dry weather so the ground was actually very dry and it did make pegging quite hard going.

As for the site, there are 3 main playgrounds. One small undercovered area for under 6's, which is nice for toddlers but a bit boring for over 5's.

The 2nd is a short walk from the campsite and has slides, climbing frames, rockers, a sea-saw and other similar things. All made from wood so in keeping with the setting. Next to this is the light railway station. The train costs £1 for a return ticket and leaves this station every 30mins, 12-5pm.

This train travels through the woods to the 3nd playarea. This has a mix of things from a small slide and sea-saw to a zip cord and a tree top slide. There is also an assult course for older children.

You can either get the train back to the main area, or follow the trail through the woods back to the shop/cafe. We did this and along the way there are other play things like climbing frames, a swing tyre, and wobble boards. Eventually you return back to the shop/cafe and public toilets.

The cafe do a good range of meals, for a reasonable price. It is well presented and they seem eagar to please. The shop sells a bit of everything. Small gifts for children, pretty gifts for women, as well as basics for the campers. You can also buy duck feed from the shops for 50p.

If you get some feed head down to the lake and before you know it you could have 30 odd ducks around your feet.

My youngest can get quite freaked out at this so we headed round the pond to the BBQ area, and she sat on a picnic table to feed them as they weren't surrounding her then.

This area is really nice, there are several stone built BBQ's that are available to use, along with lots of picnic benches and tables.

There is much more woodlands to explore but we stuck with the area between play parks and lake.

We paid £17 P/N for our pitch which we think is really reasonable, esp when you consider they charge the public to enter the country park during the daytime, but this is included in the price for campers - it would of cost us £9 to enter the park for the day (2 adults, 1 child, 1 under 3)

There were a few downsides, as always.

Some fellow campers were a bit noisy and lots of children playing out till almost 10pm. Not ideal when I had mine in bed for when it got dark.

I could imagine during very busy times the facilities would stuggle to cope with the demand, but it was ok for us even when the site filled up on the Saturday.

And the last one is the actually pitch, dry and dusty and very tough. But I imagine could be complete opposite during wet weather!

Plus points.

Very friendly staff always happy to help.

Excellent tourist info office on the campsite. Its past the shower blocks in a small wooden 'shed'. The owners have an array of leaflets for days out as well as other info, ranging from directions to the nearest supermarkets and pubs, to menu's of the pubs, and numbers for local take aways.

Although the facilities were small, they were very clean and had a mop and bucket available to help keep it clean

Also excellent recycling facilities.

I'd happily stay here again. We chose Brokerswood due to its location to longleat, but I'd be happy to camp here again if exploring the area.

We spent a weekend at Brokerswood and really enjoyed it.

Loo blocks are quite clean, even thought the park was full while we were there. Lots of hot water and decent showers, but we had to time our trip to the washing up facilities carefully as they were quite busy at meal times.

The staff at Brokerswood are great. We had a problem with our gas regulator, the warden was really helpful and friendly, helping to sort us out and lending us some equipment overnight until we could get a replacement. The office staff were just as good.

Excellent printed directions to atractions, supermarkets, camping shops, pubs (and their menus)were all provided in an information hut open 24 hrs.Very useful.

This is an excellent base for Longleat visits as you really do need 2 days to see aeverything on the passport ticket.

Our kids loved the woods and play areas. Wellies would probably be advisable after a wet spell though. We spent some time on our last afternoon trying to feed the ducks, but the huge carp in the lake were beating them to the bread. My two boys enjoyed throwing the bread in and watching ducks and fish scramble for it!

The Kicking Donkey pub had some lovely local beers and ciders and a good menu.Very generous portions!

The only down side to our stay at Brokerwood was the noise. Some of this was just general noisy camper noise. It was a much noiser site than our recent experiences. But not too surprising at peak times in August. However, over the Saturday night, (in fact to 7am the next morning!) there was a very noisy drum and base/rave/gig going on. I had a chat with a fellow sufferer at 1 am.And he said it was a couple of miles away!

Having said that we will return to Brokerswood. But only with a family supply of earplugs just in case!

My wife and two daughters stayed here for 4 days in late July.

Entry to the site, which is part of the Brokerswood Country Park, is by access code and barrier, by the shop that sells a small range of emergency foods and camping equipment (supermarkets are 3 or more miles away).

Once through the barrier, the road takes you past the toilet and shower blocks, plus laundry and washing up room. The road is oneway with the pitches on the left on the outer edge of the site, and the pitches on the right of the road, in the middle.

There is a mix of grass and hard standing pitches, and therefore, a mix of caravans, campervans and tents.

Not all pitches have electricity and not all are the same size.

We have an eight man tent and were in the far corner and struggled to fit our tent into the space (our guy ropes were on the next plot). Had we had the next plot we could have had our car alongside the tent comfortably!

I would recommend asking which size pitch you are getting if you have a big tent.

All the facilities are clean and checked regularly. The staff from the country park can be seen around the camp site and are always helpful.

The site ask for no noise after 11pm and the request was generally observed before that time.

The one problem we encountered was that people parked their cars across areas that could have been used by children to play on around the tent.

The plots should be better marked and the site should encourage vehicles to be parked closer to the tents.

It rained for 24 hours when we were there but the drainage was good.

There is an open play area near the toilets/showers that most kids converged on but there was also the use of the Adventure Playground with assault course, plus other climbing frames around the park's paths. The park itself is adjacent to the site but is very woody and dark so not many children out on their own. Also bring wellies!

There is also a small railway at the park.

Locally (walking distance - less than a mile) there is the Kicking Donkey pub with decent ales, real craught cider from Thatchers and a reasonable menu. It also has a decent garden with climbing frames for kids. They also sell beer to take out!

Longleat was the reason for our trip there and the site sells discounted tickets which are cheaper than getting them at Longleat.

Bath, Bristol and Farleigh Hungerford Castle are all close by in a car.

Highly recommended site.

We have just returned from a week at this site. It was predominantly tents there during our stay. It was half term week and the place was heaving with kids (not a problem in itself as we have 2 of our own). It is a lively, noisy site though. Lots of children were out playing until after 10pm (not ours) and by 7.30am they'd be out playing again. My children made lots of friends and loved the play area within the woods as well as the small play area on site.
Our dog enjoyed lots of walks in the woods, but I do agree that wellies would be a must during or after a wet spell. The staff were the politest I have ever encountered and they keep the place very clean and tidy.
We didn't use the cafe, but used the shop for a few gifts and basics, we also got our discounted Longleat tickets from the shop (saved about £7 for a family of 4). I also paid the £2 one night for half an hour in the family bathroom and enjoyed a soak in the bath, a real treat when caravanning.
The pitches are not huge. Car, caravan, awning just about fitted on the pitch. The roads are not tarmacked and are gravel which is surprisingly noisy in the dead of night when campers are passing to visit the facilities. The site was at 100% occupancy during our stay and the facilities struggled to cope. Queues at the toilet block, the washing up area and the laundry as there is only one washing machine and one tumble dryer.

Our family have just returned from our camping weekend at Brokerswood and we fully enjoyed our stay and don't agree with previous reviewer. However we did find the pitches crammed together and ours weren't particularly level. But was very dry not muddy at all. Our pitch was against a hedge and is hedged all around outside and down the middle, didn't experience any really loud road noise or trains running late into night.

Toilets both blocks were fine and clean but block one is newer they could do with a separate baby change room the family room is excellent but could do with adding a change mat to it do have baby seats for little ones to sit in which was ace as we left our daughters one at home.

Staff are welcoming and friendly and very helpful. Shop and cafe are good and reasonably priced food was very nice.

Country park, train and play park went down well with eldest but they ccould do with adding more for younger ones and adding a slide in the one undercover.

Longleat was only 10 mins and son enjoyed postman pat land which was quite tiny so if going I would recommend buying a passport and seeing everything.

We (Husband & Wife) spent a Friday and Saturday night at this campsite in March in a tent, and it was very cold on the Friday night and very very windy on the Saturday night. Obviously this was no fault of the campsite and the cold was probably only to be expected in March.

In my opinion the pitches are pretty exposed with not much in the way of hedges or trees offering privacy or protection from the elements. There is a one way single track road that runs through the campsite separating the pitches. While the pitches are pretty well marked out, I feel that in the busy season I would definitely feel a bit caged in and on display as there is little in the way of privacy. The grass pitches were pretty muddy which surprised me as it hadn't really rained for a number of days.

We experienced quite a lot of noise from the main road that runs along the front of the campsite, and we weren't even camped next to the road. There must be a railway depot near by as there was a lot of heavy machinery type noise and you could here trains running both quite late into the night.

The toilet and shower blocks were always clean, but that isn't surprising considering that there were only 3 tents and 4 caravans on the Friday night and only 1 tent, 5 caravans and 3 motorhomes on the Saturday night.

The walk in the woods was good, but extremely muddy and we really could have done with wellington boots. We think they must have a water logging problem on the whole site from the amount of boggy areas.

Our main reason for booking this site was because we wanted to spend a day or so at Longleat Safari Park & House and this was only a 15 minute drive away. Longleat was great and we plan on going back later in the year to finish up what we didn't see on our passport ticket. We won't however be staying at Brokerswood again, as while it is clean and tidy it's not scheduled or quiet enough for our liking.

I have been on a rally to Brokerswood twice now and both times were most enjoyable.

Great hardstanding gravel pitches with EHU, I understand tents can go on the grass in the summer months??

Toilet facilities clean and warm, on request you can get a key and have a bath as well which is fab for the little ones who don't like showering.

Its set in a country park with a lake, a few adventure playgrounds and a small railway, all the kids loved the adventure parks and enjoyed getting extremely muddy! and you can even hire wellies at the shop/reception.

A few miles to local supermarkets.

Ideally located also for those who would like to try Longleat.

I really enjoyed our stays at Brokerswood and hope to return again :)

We stayed here for New Year 2008/9. We chose this site because we were meeting friends there. We really enjoyed our stay, the toilets and showers were modern and clean although you sometimes ended up in the dark because the light switches are on a timer! We enjoyed walking round the frozen lake and watching the ducks skating on ice - some of them were really funny.

We saw in the New Year in the Kicking Donkey Pub and then walked back to the site for a few more drinks. We also enjoyed a walk to the White Horse in temperatures around -4!

I would like to go back to this site in the summer when we could really appreciate the woods and parkland etc.
