I used a 10 x 10 shelter this weekend to camp under. The first day and night the shelter was excellent providing cover from the rain and wind for a cooking and eating area in camp.
The second day we heading out to explore the area once more and on return found that the shelter had been completely destroyed by wind. Very disappointing. The shelter seemed robust and I had pitched a windbreak across one side and attached a sun wall to another, a tent being on another side. The wind was around 30mph I understand. Our holiday was over, the poles were bent and broken and where they had broken they had worn and split the canvas. It was a very sad sight as I had done a lot of research and excitedly bought what I thought was the best shelter on the market. I may buy another one if I can save up, but I will be very careful where I pitch it and make sure that I only stay at sheltered campsites with it.

So much better than the pop up gazebo's, when linked to my tent it makes an amazing living area that is as waterproof as the tent.
Plenty of room for everyone and makes a great communal area if its not great camping weather plus its high UV rating makes it good for keeping the sun of, its easy to set up and very sturdy.
The ground sheet when fitted zips to the the sides making it water tight so could be slept in.

We have previously owned pop-up gazebos to provide much-needed shade when camping abroad. However they proved far too flimsy in anything like a strong breeze and the constant popping up and down as we changed sites soon put a strain on the metal causing it to snap.
We saw a number of event shelters on holiday in 2012 and after discussing their merits with the owners, decided to purchase one for our 2013 holiday.
Naturally we practised erecting it at home first and found the secret was to ensure the corners are all pushed in to the centre as much as possible before adding the canopy. Another tip is to try fitting the doors (if you have them) before fitting the canopy - if the doors fit, then so will the canopy.
Overall we were very pleased with the shelter. It fitted snugly to the front of our tent. During very windy days the shelter didn't move and the poles suffered no strain at all. We secured all the guys but needed no more than those provided. We have the 12 x 12 and there was plenty of room underneath for dining, relaxing and cooking.
The reason for the the score of 8 was down to the level of shade the shelter provided. Admittedly the temperatures were in the late 20s and it was full on sun but we were disappointed by how much sun penetrated the canopy. Initially we tied a small tarpaulin over the top which helped to reduce the glare and increase the shade but it was too small. After that we purchased a lightweight sunshade blanket which fitted perfectly when tied over the whole canopy and increased the level of shade provided by the shelter.
Having purchased 2 sides, we used only one, for privacy, as we found 2 prevented a much needed flow of cooling air. I am happy to say we didn't have rain so cannot report how well the shelter coped.
By the end of our holiday we were adept at putting the shelter up and packing it away with no problem at all. It bore no signs of wear at all.
We heartily recommend this as a substantial alternative to a pop-up gazebo.

Bought one after seeing another camper with kids put one up. I purchased the 15x15 and god its massive you need a step ladder just to help you but once up in around 20mins the space really comes handy if raining or looking to keep out of the sun and great for cooking on camp stoves.
Due to the size this limits which campsites you can go to but the ones I like accept it plus its great in the garden also for parties. Well 2013 here we come.

This is a great piece of kit, however it is quite chunky, so you must bear this in mind if space is a factor for you.
I have used this item many times, both when away on a campsite and at home at BBQ's etc. It has faired quite well but the pole springs are starting to become very loose and look like they will snap soon.
I have got the walls for this too, which are great and give that extra piece of privacy when required.
This makes a great drive-away shelter for my campervan.
The material is still going strong, and looks like it will for some time.
You have to be quite regimented when putting this up and use the guiding rope ensuring your distances are correct. If you vary just a little from the desired shape, then it is very hard to get the material to attach to the poles and this could also cause leaking in heavy rain.
However we have mastered this now and can have it assembled and ready to go in just approx. 5 - to 10 minutes.
A great shelter and one I would recommend if you have the space to carry it around.

I bought one to act as a canopy for our Sunncamp Prism. It was absolutely marvellous, fitted snugly over the front peak and kept off the rain. It also survived strong winds but we had to use stronger pegs than were provided for the feet and make sure that the guys were used and tight.
As a sun shelter it was also very good and we used it mainly for cooking under. We had a side wall behind the kitchen that was invaluable for keeping the wind off, we just unclipped the top portion in strong winds and there was no movement of the frame.
It made such a difference to the tent, it made it able to cope with all weathers.

Have just got back from a long weekend of celebrating the Diamond Jubilee in Carnforth, on a site right on the coast of Morecambe Bay. If anyone was there or close by this weekend, you will already know that on Saturday night the area was completely battered by very strong winds and torrential rain.
We bought our event shelter specifically for this weekend as there were 31 of us going camping, and knowing the Great British weather in June, we wanted a dry area for bbq'ing, sheltering and just generally congregating so we werent all crowded into 1 families tent.
We pitched this between the 7 tents and it really was at the centre of our weekend. Having seen the forecast prior to going, we also purchased 2 of the walls to offer some shelter from the wind and rain. We have the 15x15 one and once set up, it is very large, big enough to sit 17 children under all around tables while they ate.
It is reassuringly sturdy, with the very strong frame linking together well and being very quick to erect, as long as you have someone tall to do the centre piece at the top! The cavas is a quality piece of kit and fit perfectly over the frame. I would suggest that when pegging down the feet, you use at least 1 sturdier than normal peg on each corner as once the canvas is on and the wind is blowing, I can imagine normal pegs could quite easily be pulled up and the whole shelter becomes a giant kite. And always peg out the guy lines for the added strength and peace of mind this gives.
Each evening when the kids were in bed, we had a small fire pit in the middle of the shelter and comfortably got all 14 adults seated under the shelter and far enough away from the fire so as not to be melting shoes!
This shelter took a serious amount of abuse from the weather and withstood it all, the only thing being we had to retighten the guy ropes after a night of severe winds, which considering the size of the shelter, is pretty impressive. We thought long and hard about buying this as it isn't cheap, especially considering the walls have to be purchased separately, but I have to say that the shelter made this weekend where the weather would otherwise have ruined it.
A deserved 10/10.

Bought one of these for the wedding so we had some shade outside. Cheaper than hiring a marquee!
We've used it for camping a few times since then and always smile smugly to ourselves when we go to a festival and see other sensible people with Event Shelters. We have one Sun Wall (£15) which we find to be very useful as a windbreak, it clips on very nicely with sturdy plastic clips, and although it does catch the wind, you can simply unclip the top part in very strong winds. You can get sides with windows and a zip, to totally enclose the Shelter for kids to play in, but they are a little pricey (£25). You can apparently buy a couple of these Shelters and connect them together, but I've never seen the connectors for sale anywhere. (Coleman directly perhaps?) I bet gaffer tape and bin liners would also work quite well!
Let's be clear here, this is not your common or garden gazebo. It's quite bulky, and it's very heavy, mainly because of the steel poles, but that means it's also very sturdy, and is worth taking whatever the weather if there are a few of you going, or if your tent is tiny and you want somewhere to cook. The spec says 18KG and I can carry it a short distance over my shoulder without any trouble. Longer walks will soon wear you down!
It made the rain at Glade Festival 2011 a mere inconvenience, and all the spangly-eyed visitors stopping by for a bit of respite complimented us on our 'lovely camp' (we installed solar powered fairy lights).
It survived the gales at Cadwell Park in August 2011: these gales destroyed almost all the other gazebos, even ones that looked pretty sturdy, and ripped apart a few caravan awnings. (It did almost try to take off once, but we just unclipped the top of the Sun Wall, which was acting a bit like a sail. Don't treat it lightly - ALWAYS use the guy ropes, and securely tighten the pull-straps on the legs, otherwise it'll fly away or tear the fabric in strong winds.)
It made the freezing rain up in the Pennines at easter weekend 2012 quite tolerable, it gave us a place to congregate and cook in the dry, and it also helped to give us a little bit of cover at night when the temperatures dropped to near freezing after dark.
My only mild criticism is that although the fabric is waterproof, it's a big surface area, and its shallow slopes and high tension against the poles means that the structure lends itself to allowing rain to collect on the surface and drip through. Definitely nothing like as wet as you would be if you didn't have the shelter at all! I might give it a wazz with the Nikwax Solar Tent Proof stuff, and see if that helps.

This thing has delivered enough value to pay for itself several times. We frequently camp with other groups and arrange tents around the shelter. It provides good shade for the kids (we have a wall that we move accordingly), and has saved at least one weekend of solid rain that would otherwise have been a wash out.
It's not light, but it's worth packing. Putting it up is pretty easy but be warned - not following instructions will lead to things getting broken.
Coleman have released a smaller vesion of the shelter. I'm not rushing out to buy one - I think I'll get at least another (3rd) season out of it, probably 4 or 5.
It takes about 15 minutes to put it up. I've done it alone in slightly longer but it's not difficult if you follow the destructions.
I've given it a ten because it deserves it.

Amazing, in the Lake District with friends and there was torrential rain and our friend just whipped this out, put it together and we were fine. We were able to stay out (though we went to a pub) we could have easily have stayed out all night. The tent stood up to the rain and we had a great time, we will be getting one soon I expect
