We were told DeWaard's Albatros have got to be the Rolls-Royce of Tents,and they are! We bought ours after travelling to the Netherlands and spending an afternoon with DeWaard, who demonstrated how to put it up and put it away afterwards … and then got us to show them we could do it. Perfect. It was 1999 and so we've enjoyed using it just about every year since then come rain or shine, heat, hail and gale. We were the only tent left standing around us one year after a particularly nasty gale. They are built to stand proud and last come what may. At times we've hosted evening meals for over a dozen using two tables (and guitars) extending under our awning without encroaching the sleeping quarters. Brilliant! Utterly Brilliant.

I bought an Albatros Junior I from a lovely chap called Dave on Facebook this year.

It is small and tall and suits our needs perfectly. I am a mum of two happy campers who are old enough to hold up a pole or two but couldn't help me put up a huge tunnel tent so pyramids are our favourite kind of tent now.

It's quick and simple to pitch and not too heavy to lift on my own even with the SIG.

We will use this tent for one or two night stays away as it's just big enough for three SIMs and our bits and pieces for a short stay but probably not big enough for a week of unsettled weather as the inside space isn't very big.

All in all a lovely classic tent and there's nothing like waking up to a creamy coloured roof with such beautiful stitching.

We bought this tent in 1995 and used it for 3 weeks a year for our annual family holidays high up in the Alps. Simply the highest quality and most storm proof big tents around. We have survived some appalling storms and torrential rains on many occasions when lots of other tents have been blown to pieces. After 20 years it it still in virtually new conditions.

I have had a DeWaard Albatross now for over 20yrs.

We have used it in horrendous gales with driving rain in the north of Scotland when it has never moved. One night a frame tent nearby disintegrated and two well roped down tent awnings blew out! The Albatross didn't even flap as 17 of us sat round tables having a good time.

I've used it in white out conditions with the only problem being cold fingers and trying to locate the pegs! Drying the tent if using it in the winter requires a LOT of space.

We've used it in the heat of the south of France and all conditions in between and never had any problems.

My family have now grown up and flown the nest and I'm not getting any younger to lift it so I'm looking at buying a lesser spotted woodpecker to use for short breaks. And feedback on that tent would be welcome

We bought a brand new Albatros in May 2014 - having decided that the trip to Holland and taking the chance on a used one was not worth our while. Note that 20 year old tents are selling for Ł850-Ł1000 at this time.

We really love it. We have owned Cabanons and all sorts of other brands over the years and absolutely nothing compares to this tent.

We bought a few extras - the mesh door, the side panels and the vario, as well as the hanging storage things for the side. With shipping from the manufacturer the tent price was staggering - approaching Ł3,000.

However, we have planned 8 camping trips in 2014 and figure that if we camp for another 20-25 years the tent will have earned its keep.

Everything about it is amazing, the canvas, the stitching, the design. It really is a forever tent.

We had torrential rain, local floods and gales on our first trip and as expected our tent was solid.

We are a family of three plus a dog - plenty of room inside and once you add the vario space there is a huge amount of room.

Couldn't be happier with our tent choice.

I just sold my De Waard Albatros (probably the best tent in the world) to a UK resident. I was surprised about the high interest of UK people to my ad on a (Dutch) internet site, written in Dutch!

They all told me that it is easy to buy the tent in the the Netherlands, but impossible to get a an instruction translated in English.

This is why I posted 5 jpeg files in the photo's area, being an English translation referring to the pictures in the formal dutch Albatros instruction (downloadable on the 'de Waard' site)

This is the most beautiful tent!

I went over to the Netherlands and purchased this tent, though I had only ever seen one ion the flesh over here.

I visited the De Waard shops and saw the amazing quality of them. The stitching is thorough and well reinforced, zips strong and the canvas is thick and good quality.

In terms of size there is generous room for 4 and with a sewn in, very thick quality groundsheet the whole thing is very warm and cosy.

It absolutely oozes quality and craftsmanship and I would recommend them to anyone.

Even though the canvas seems really thick, it is very easy to pack as it folds up really easily.

There a a lot of pegging points that makes this tent feel really secure, and it's easy to get the tent as tight as a drum. No more baggy looking tents!

I would recommend though that you get all the extras at the same time. I haven't got the inner tents, but haven't felt the need for them. I have the curtains, and the mesh door and the 'varioluiffel' (the big front canopy) and that is superb as it doubles the amount of space,and provides plenty of shelter.

To put it up the first time took me about 30 mins.

The tent has little zipped vents at it's base and this provides a lovely airy atmosphere. No more hot stuffy tents.

All in all these tents are an investment and I can't praise them highly enough :-)

Beautifully designed, great quality canvas. It is a huge difference from standard tents. We rented an Albatros De Waard in Camping Neus Tent-Lodge in Spain, on the Costa Brava, and even though there was good shadow all over the place, temperatures around were very warm. One would think that going inside the tent would imply an oven sort-of-heat. But no, it was ok, stable temperature thanks to the special De Waard canvas.

Great breakfast in the morning under the lovely canvas, in the quiet.

Just returned from the Netherlands having purchased a De Waard Albatross on Marktplaats.Nl for Euros825. The tent, although nearly 10 years old, appears almost brand new. Having spent 5 or 6 weeks a year for the last 10 years in a Wild Country Family Khamsin the difference could not be more stark: the quality of the canvas, poles, various awnings and pegs is first rate, the space inside is enormous and more than adequately sleeps 4. The inside living area is large enough to comfortably seat four people around a table, the awnings make a comfortable living area in wet weather. The tent is bulky and heavy and really does need a trailer or large estate car to transport. Drying the tent was easy this time with our first dry day of the Summer enabling us to put it up and dry it properly before putting it away until the next time. Am I pleased with it? Yes, delighted: there is a feeling of opulence once inside, a feeling of luxury with no more sense of battling the elements. As another reviewer on this site suggests De Waard owners disregard the weather and carry on regardless. My only concerns are pitching it in a gale and drying it after a wet winter camping trip.

The most beautiful tent I ever saw and to purchase one, what a great excuse to take a trip to Holland. On Marktplaatz (Dutch ebay), I was able to get my Albatros at a bargain price. I'm still trying to figure out how to put it up though, as the instructions are in Dutch and I can't find an English translation anywhere.

Manufacturer's Description

The tent it all started with 60 years ago. The Albatross is a family tent with two bedrooms, and one room of eight square meters. This makes a great living area and rainy days a lot more pleasant.

The wide entrance has a headroom of 215 cm. The high degree of shelter makes the Albatros a comfortable four-person family tent no matter the weather.

Many details have been improved in the 2015 model.
Fewer guylines make the tent a lot easier to put up.
Beautiful awning and windbreaks are optional.
