We have had this tent for a number of years and used it in weather both wonderful and atrocious.

Its really easy to assemble and pack away. The carry bag allows plenty of space for you to pack in a rush. Which is nice if its wet.

As always with tent ratings, it says 4 people, so that means comfortable for 2. We have always been 2 people and a medium sized dog and for that there is plenty of space with the two bedrooms opened into one.

The tent survived the 90 mile an hour gales from last year, so it is sturdy enough and is not showing much wear after 4 years. So I suspect there are many available in the second hand market.

We bought the rock 4 a few years ago new from go outdoors, we average 3 to 4 camping trips to Cornwall every year and our rock 4 tent has had everything the great British weather has thrown at it and has survived brilliantly, we can put the tent up in about 15 minutes while sipping a cider, the only downside is the small lobby area for 4 people when it rains and have to take cover its a bit cramped

I bought my tent in 2013 but have only just managed to get away in it. We went up to Scotland this August and was not disappointed with it. Just me (mum) and my 18 and 8 year old girls. Easy to put up (mainly solo) no working out which pole goes where as they are all the same size. Good feature is the inner tent is built in so no messing about fitting that, removable room divider. Built in ground sheet cutting out drafts and fitted skirt for water runoff. Good head height along length for size of tent. Had torrential rain twice and tent didn't even notice, stood up to a few strong gusts of wind we had. Choice of large front door with toggles to hold bottom down in wind, or side door also with toggle to hold down. Good ventilation at rear also.

We were comfortable staying for a week in this size as room to pack a tent in the car was limited.

We bought the rock 4 at a bargain price of Ł100 from go outdoors and I must say its the best tent we ever bought, big enough for me,my partner and 7 yr old, although we only go for weekends with mates so we don't take a lot,nice spacious tent keeps you warm and dry and very strong as well,have no problems with this tent at all, it goes up as easy as putting it down, we also use the delta pegs as we camp near the beach so it can sometimes get a bit breezy, id recommend this tent to anyone

My oh has been trying to talk me into buying a tent for some time now, we normally camp in a folding camper but fancied a tent so we can camp in weather we wouldn`t take the camper out in or on sites that are only suitable for tents. The Rock 4 and canopy seemed like the perfect tent for us a family of 3 and a dog. We like it because we can stand up in it, we are all tall and we still have plenty of room head wise. The area to sleep in is ok, I wouldn`t want to fit in 4 but perhaphs smaller people will fit or 2 adults and 2 kids. We do like it because it warms up quickly with our fan heater. Our first camp was 25 October and we were warm and cosy all night long.

A great tent for short stays on its own or if you add the canopy longer stays.

Easy to erect and very affordable.

We can`t wait to go away again in our cosy Rock 4

Used this tent for the first time in August 2013 and as first time campers it took my husband and me a bit longer than the 15 minutes the manufacturers state to erect, even after having had a trial run of putting it up in the garden a few weeks beforehand. However I am sure with more practice we will get quicker. Am so pleased that we decided to go all out and invest in the matching canopy as it does give you that bit of extra space. As the weather was so nice all weekend we were able to leave our chairs and table in the canopy all the time. We also bought the carpet for the living area which does add a bit of luxury and makes it warm underfoot it the morning. All in all a great tent and accessories for the price and we are very much looking forward to our next camping adventure. My only comment for any future purchasers of the Rock 4 would be to invest in some good quality tent pegs. The ones that come with the tent are good but cannot cope with heavily stoned ground, like it was in Norfolk, and we had to throw away about 8 pegs as they bent whilst we were trying to secure them in the ground.

This is our first time camping so we bought a tent we could afford and the hi gear rock 4 was the one we chose.Well pleased it said 15 minutes to erect and we done it in 18 minutes .Looks an expensive tent and done the job when we had a nights rain,can't wait for our next adventure ,so if you want a tent that does the job in the wet and spacious and you have little money this is the tent for you

Excellent tent. I wanted to down size so bought the rock 4 and a porch to go with it. Being a lady of a certain age I was informed that I would be able to erect this ten my self. I've just spent a wet weekend in this tent and couldn't be more happy with it. It went up like a dream and even the porch was hassle free to attach, and I really like the sew in bed room inner tent. It was even a bit windy but I still managed without any help. I'm pleased I bought the porch as it allowed me to keep the front door open when it was raining, I think if I hadn't got it I'd have spent most of the evenings looking out at blue canvas as the door slopes, so if it's raining the wet would be able to get in if the door was rolled open. With the porch you also gain space to put all the wet stuff you accumulate. It was very windy when I came to put it down and I did have to borrow a 12 yr old child to sit on the canvas once I'd removed the poles to stop it taking off over the moors. I'd really recommend this tent I'm more than happy with it and don't be afraid if you are lone camping it really is simple to put up only took me 30 mins with the porch as well.

This really is a great tent and everyone comments on it!

I really like the fact that the groundsheet is sown in, makes it much quicker to put up and means no water can get in, although for some reason you can't hook up the groundsheet by the sidedoor so water could get in this way (we've never had a problem with it)

I also really like the fact that it is just 3 poles that are exactly the same size and just go horizontally across the tent, i've seen some tents of a similar size that use different sized poles for different parts of the tent which seems needlessly complicated.

My partner and I can get it put up in about 15-20 mins and down in about the same time, much quicker than the small 2 man tent we had before.

It really is a great tent and at a really good price, we've never had any problems with it!

This is an update to my previous post dated 01/09/2012

I've now had chance to use the tent, only for a weekend break but it was perfect for the two of us and dog.The Saturday night we did have a lot of rain, but no leaks at all and it was very stable.

Points worth noting:-

1) I did read that some people mentioned about the bottom of the doors not having a zip, best to leave this as is!

On our first morning there was a lot of condensation on the inside of the roof I just sponged it up, there had been no rain, just a hot Friday night. This was with all the vents open, so leaving the bottom of the doors as they are will try and help with air flow. I can only imagine it being a LOT worse if these were to be fully sealed as well. The second night was much cooler and a lot of rain, the condensation the following morning was much reduced.

2) Difficulty threading poles through sleeves, I looked at this and seem to have found a sort of work around, I separated the poles from the shock cord. On one end or the metal joining ferrule I filed a bevel all the way round the edge to give a slight taper.

I did this on all the exposed ferrule's, you can only easily get to one end as the other is fixed to the pole itself and I didn't want to damage the pole. After doing this, it does make it very much easier to slide the poles through, OK you just have to push them through tapered or beveled edge first one way but it does make a big difference.

When taking the tent down to remove the poles just carry on pushing all the way through in the same direction. They didn't seem to snag at all.

Only 9 stars, due to the modification I've had to do to the poles and the limited ventilation to reduce the condensation, although at this price it is very good.

Well worth the money I paid for it. I have no problem in recommending this tent, it's quick and easy to pitch and has lots of room. I can see no reason why it shouldn't hold up even in really bad weather, which I have yet to find out.

The Hi Gear Rock 4 is a flexible family tent for smaller families or couples looking for extra room. The tent and bedroom are separate parts that are permanently attached by a mesh panel, so you get the reduced condensation of a double-skin design without the hassle of fitting the inners every time you pitch. The sewn in groundsheet keeps drafts and insects out as well as protecting from wet ground.
