Bought one of these for £35 on E-bay. This was our first family tent - the best thing about it was that we established after using it once that the kids loved camping and that we wanted to go lots more. For the price the space was pretty good but every time one of the kids tripped over it ripped (especially near the door). I was constantly having to repair it. For non clumsy adults on a budget wanting to try camping this was perfect, just not robust enough to handle our young boys. Was fine in light rain, not sure I would trust it in heavy rain though.

We're fussy over our tents. Firstly it has to be light enough to fit on a motorbike without upsetting the balance or handling. Then we need headroom for our bad backs, space for helmets, luggage and stuff and a large porch for changing out of wet/muddy bike gear. Finally it has to be easy enough to pitch in the dark after you get back from the pub (I know you should do it before you go, but.)

The Aachen fills all of these roles adequately. It's not a perfect tent but has served us well for 4 seasons now, including 3 trips to Spain & Portugal when it is pitched every night and broken down every morning for 2 weeks. It's stood up to Welsh and Irish weather with minimal leakage (we added extra Velcro to the window covers and they've never leaked!)and has never threatened to blow down if it's pitched and pegged properly. And with just 3 poles all of the same length, only a novice or a moron could find pitching this difficult.

4 years on, with plenty of abuse and probably in excess of 100 pitches later, its getting very tired. The elastic inner-tent hangers have been replaced, one of the inner-tent pitching rings has ripped leaving a hole in the floor corner, the outer metal pitching rings are fraying in their restraining straps and despite a healthy application of Fabseal last year its beginning to let water in when the rain drives it. Finally, last time out a few weeks ago, one of the poles splintered.

All that aside though, this has been a marvellous tent that has served us admirably. I just hope our new Outwell Arizona performs as well for as long.

RECOMMENDED for no-nonsense camping on a budget.

PROs: Standing room inside porch & (almost) bedroom

Easy to pitch in under 15 mins

Sturdy

Inexpensive - a lot of tent for your money

CONs: May leak if not pitched correctly

Window screen inadequate (but easily fixable)

Some stitching dubious

I bought this from ebay £45. Bargain :). I bought it to use for 2 ppl, being 5'4' I can stand in the centre of bedroom (not using dividing screen) and lounge area. I use a large double airbed which takes up 2/3 of the total bedroom space so if you plan to use it as 4 pp, make sure you use small airbeds!

Instructions totally useless! All poles are the SAME size for starters not different as stated in instructions, take a photo with you to use as guide but once its laid out/after 1st time its easy. Need 2 ppl to erect.

Very heavy rain for 10 hours and it held the water out, if you touched the inside of the roof it was moist but no leaks. Its 2010/3000 so not 100% waterproof. It did dip slightly with the water but nothing to worry about although I don't know how it would cope with more than 1 day/night of constant rain. Window is mesh so unless covered,yes-water will come in! All in all, a great weekend or summer holiday tent for under £50. If you want a winter/sustainable tent - pay more!

New to camping bought also from Ebay £60. Tent perfect for family 4 we have two teenagers and was roomy and coped for the weekend of torrential downpour - only end of /august and I was little cold but I think that was down to my rubbish sleeping bag - not the tent. I love the smart look of the tent, the ease to put it up and take down. Perfect for job.

Bought for £60 from ebay as I was new to camping and didnt want to spend too much on my 1st tent.Tent did not leak when used in moderate rain/wind, the HH has been upgraded to 3000 on new model. The tent is cheap though so materials are not the best, the zips in particular have to be handled with care as they jam very easily. Reasonable sized, 2 adults 2 kids and puppy managed for 4 days. For the money it's a dry tent for a short break.

I have to disagree with the other comments, I actually really like this tent. I contacted the seller after purchase with the comments below and was assured that the 2008 version had fixed these problems.

By no means is it a perfect tent but it has not leaked or broken during horrendous weather. We used it last season as our main tent, it is our weekend tent this year as we have the Wynnster raven 8. It has never leaked, a peg came out out the ground during high winds but that was due to soft ground not the tent. We have also lost 2 attachmetns for the bedroom, blame that on the puppy though as she was running around a lot.

The first few times of pitching the material stuck together and took ages to prise apart but that seems to be a thing of the past now.

You can see daylight through parts of the flysheet but its never leaked.

The reasons its not a perfect tent are;

Can't stand up apart from in the porch in the middle (I'm not exactly tall)

No curtains

No SIG

Bit small for us for a week

Other than that has served us well.

This one didn't even make it through the 1st back garden test. Useless instructions meant that I spent quite a long time trying to figure out how to put the tent up. Once it was up, there was no way to stop the back of the tent flapping around. Even on a flat lawn, the bits of tarp on the bottom of the flysheet fluttered and the whole tent rattled and swayed back and forth in a moderate breeze. Trying to sort out the inner tent, I noticed many pinpricks of daylight showing through the supposedly waterproof flysheet seams. Once the inner tent was in place I found that the back of the flysheet was flapping against the inner tent. 'No thanks,' I thought as I bundled the tent back into its bag, which promptly split a seam. The Aachen was a cheap ebay tent and I've learned my lesson - don't buy a cheap tent on ebay!

I can only repeat what others here have said. Very shoddy workmanship, leaked like a sieve, bits fell off, including part of the ring and pin and we returned it for a refund.

As above, the stitching around the windows let in rain and the distortion in the wind was something to see. I will say in its defence that the bedrooms stayed dry and warm. Looking at the stitching it looks like the machinist had been sampling schnapps before work. We have now ditched tent.

Ok - we bought this tent last year because a)we knew nothing about camping and b)it was incredibly cheap.

We have been camping in it six times now. We've had to replace some of the elastics on the inner bedrooms, but it has withstood Whitby winds, downpours in France and freezing Derbyshire Easter breaks

It leaks through the windows when it rains, but the bedrooms always stay dry. Other than that, it really isn't that bad. Ours cost less than 50 quid and is the 6 man version. So after 12 months of use it really doesn't owe us anything.

If you're a hardcore camper, this isn't the tent for you, but if you want to get a feel for the camping life, in good weather then you could do a lot worse.
