This is a good tent with plenty of room for our family of 5 with its three separate bedrooms and central area. There is a porch but it's only big enough for a mat to store our shoes and bucket and spades really. Even on rainy days there is plenty of room in the central area for chairs and a table to brew up inside etc. Bit tricky to put the poles up and definitely needs two peop!e. Windows in the roof are good for stargazing on clear nights :)

Great tent. Porch could be bigger but there is an option to purchase the porch. Bedrooms are large, living space is very large. I would have liked more windows but you can't have everything! be careful with the poles, they can spring under pressure whilst fixing into place, I have a nasty bruise on the side of my eye the first time I put it up.

This tent is a brilliant tent! We purchased this 3 yrs ago and have used it twice and will be using it two time this year.
The only problems we found it takes two people at least to put it up and it and it was tricky to assemble but cant complain about the space inside and the rooms either just thought the porch could have been bigger apart from that a could family tent

Love this tent but definitely need the porch. The space inside is great but the tent isn't the easiest to pitch. You need at least 2 people. We have used it a lot and had lots of rain on occasions but this tent has not let us down. I will be looking for the front extension asap. Putting the poles in the clips can be difficult and they sometimes bend in strange positions and look like they may snap but once up the tent is great.

This tent is huge. We love the amount of space you get in the main section and the panorama porch. We sleep 2 adults and 2 kids. The larger pods have plenty of room for a double air bed and bits and pieces. The smaller pod is perfect for one. It has lost a mark due to the difficulty in putting it up. The person who crawls inside needs to be strong and able to tolerate heat. I am going to try not putting all the poles in next time.

A fabulous large, spacious, light, versatile family tent.
Did take a couple of attempts to put up the first time, a definite two person job! Would ignore what Outwell suggest in putting all poles in to begin with, just the centre dome is enough or too heavy for a lady to lift up from inside.
Husband & I have it down to a fine art now, takes 25 minutes to get tent up with just pegs etc to put in.
We remove third bedroom pod which means back door can be opened for ventilation. Panoramic porch big enough for all cooking, food preparing etc & plenty of room for chairs too, without even needing to use large internal living area.
We had monsoon rains when we camped in August & delighted to report we remained safe & DRY!
Would definitely recommend this tent & lovely to have something that looks different to all the tunnel tents on site.

Recently upgraded from a 6 berth Vango Icarus to the superior Outwell HartfordXLP as we were running out of space and needed more bedroom area and a sturdier constructed tent for British weather and the Hartford does not disappoint.
We are 2adults and 3 children under 10 and used this for a 9 day festival camp this summer. There is plenty of room inside, the living spaces great and the porch is huge, using it for our table and chairs, cooking stuff and food and shoes and still not crowded. We did lots of research and were a little apprehensive about the size and difficulty in erecting such a huge tent. The Hartford is a tardis however, actually looking quite modest in size compared to many other large tunnel tents on the campsite although offering much more space inside!
We did a trial run beforehand, putting the tent up after watching the video several times and expecting it to take forever but we had it up in half an hour, far less than our smaller tunnel tent takes after 3 years of using it! Pegging out all the guy lines takes about another half an hour for my husband while I unpack the beds etc inside,so for a big tent it is surprisingly easy. The 9 colour coded pole sleeves help, and impressed with the quality of the different pegs too. The tricky bit is once all the poles are in the sleeves you need to crawl into the unerected tent to the middle and then just start to push the tent roof and poles up off the ground while someone outside the tent starts fitting the ends of the poles into the ground but this probably sounds worse than it is. I am 5ft 2 and manage to lift it inside high enough for my husband to get the 3 poles forming the central dome pegged in, and find it is rather hot crawling inside but not impossible (the full height of the tent is 6ft so you don't need to be tall to do this).
Great roof light above the central dome to watch the sky and rain by and if you undo all the blinds in the porch then it is all windows, great for sitting in on a rainy day. Porch groundsheet is pegged in rather than sewn in, making it easier to pack and to not bother with in good weather. However we found that during a few wet days lots of slugs seemed to find their way in, so keep food under wraps if you leave it in the porch!
The bedroom space is great for a growing family, we found that the 2 larger rooms take a double air bed and bags or a double and a single at a push. The smaller room is comfortable to sleep one with room to store bags.
Definitely buy it as a package with the groundsheet as it would be difficult to find a tarpaulin big enough to cover the ground area, or to cut it to size.
My criticisms of the Hartford for Outwell to remedy would be that the carpet needs Velcro or something to attach it to the tent at the sides to stop it moving around so much, and that the front door, being slanted, lets in the rain when being opened and so could do with a slight canopy or being made more vertical.
All in all a great family tent which we think will last us for many years of camping trips.

My wife and I bought our Hartford XL brand new at the end of 2012 and have used it twice this year. The first time, on our own at Easter, was a try out for the main event during May half term when we would be taking some of our grandchildren camping for the first time. The Easter trip was called off after 2 days (we had planned for 4) because of the cold, but we had learnt enough about the tent to believe that it would be ideal for our grandchildren. How right we were!
We went to south Dorset for 5 days at the end of May with 3 of the children and had a wonderful time! The tent is great! It has lots of room in the communal area for everyone to sit round the table, a great help when it rained! Two of the three sleeping pods are easily big enough to take 2 camp beds or air beds, the other is smaller, but still big enough for our 11 year old grandson on an airbed.
The spacious front porch area is big enough to set up our camp kitchen and other storage units. The communal/sleeping section of the tent can be sealed off from the front porch enabling the creation of wet and dry areas to ensure that the communal area is free from wet clothing etc. The porch area has a separate bath tub ground sheet enabling removal for cleaning. We also bought a carpet for the communal area and this helped to keep little feet warm!
We also bought a footprint which helped to keep the main sewn in groundsheet clean.
We experienced one period of really heavy rain and the tent remained water tight throughout.
If I have any criticism about the tent it is a lack of vents in the communal area. We did have a slight problem with condensation but that happens in every tent I think.
The other downside is that the tent is quite complicated to erect and requires someone quite strong, and tall, to get inside to hold up the weight of the tent and all the poles while the main central poles are put in place. After that, it is pretty straight forward to ensure that all the other poles are put in place and the guylines are correctly pegged out. The coloured pegs help to ensure that the correct pegs are used.
Also, we would advise watching the Outwell video even though they make it look very easy!
Overall this is a really good tent for a large group of people to share and I thoroughly recommend it!

Review for 2010 Hartford XL
This is a real workhorse of a tent, its a 2 person job to put up and can be all sorted in 30 mins if you work at a canter. We use it in conjunction with the front extention and its a very large tent which is great for a family of 4, but could he used for many many more. The centre dome is great for when the weather is awful and you won't feel like your tripping over each other. Its a large tent to store. We feel the extension would benefit from a front door as in its current form its a wind trap. We love the tent and use it all the time.

Fantastic tent for large families or groups. Plenty of room to socialise and to sleep in private pods. Love it!, This is the second one of this model we have owned, previously had one in 2004. New refinements are great with tidy ties for guys and a carpet which gives so much added warmth and comfort.
