I decided to upgrade our family tent last year and, after doing my usual research, liked the look of the Maryland XL. I was disappointed that Outwell had stopped making them but found one on a popular auction site and took the risk of buying a used tent. As most others have stated, the tent is massive and I love the layout with a huge living area in the middle, bedroom areas at either end and a large porch that we use for all our kitchen gear. We found the tent easy to pitch despite its size and love the airy feel that the light coloured fabrics give it. We had some horrendous weather last year with gales and torrential rain and the tent did not budge an inch. We did have a small leak from the seam by the roof skylight but this was soon put right with a little seam sealant. Outwell do need to provide better quality pegs as the plastic ones are useless! Overall we absolutely love the Maryland XL and I'm gutted they are no longer made because I would not hesitate to buy a new one.

We bought this tent second-hand in 2012 after being almost blown away in a tunnel type tent!
To say it's huge is an understatement, but then there are only 4 of us. When we first bought it I watched the video on Youtube of how to put it up and am glad I did as it would definitely have taken a lot longer to put up.
As has been said this tent will be too large for the pitches on some sites, so make sure you let the site know how big the tent is before you book.
This tent is superb and we would not change it for anything else.
The pole bag is very heavy and you could probably do with a more substantial carry bag.
The only moan is that the plastic pegs supplied are not really up to the job unless you have perfect soft ground. Why Outwell couldn't supply decent pegs I don't know.
All in all an easy 9/10, would've been 10/10 if the supplied pegs were up to it.

Hiya I have just bought one of these from a popular auction site, it was listed as used so we took a bit of a gamble.
We paid £450 for the tent, carpet, footprint and front awning extension. Our other previous tents included a Hartford XXL and a Raclet trailer tent so we wasn't sure what to expect.
We got it home and set up the tent on our back garden, this was first attempt and it took us 50 minutes in total.
I have got to say the tent is HUGE, but everything seems so well made and thought out.
Even though the tent was second hand it is in pristine condition, the inside of the tent is light due to the number of windows and the two sky lights, the bedrooms are plenty big enough for our family of 5 (although I do think you would struggle as a 10 berth), the front area of the tent is ideal as a separate kitchen area, the living area in the main tent is plenty big enough to enjoy them cosy nights.
We are looking forward to taking our tent on its first outing later this month and will update when we have.

As many of the posts have said pitching is fairly easy.
We often go away with another family who own a Montana 6 and we are usually up first, so beers on us. Two people pitching makes it super easy to put up, once you have the cross poles in send your helper inside to hold up the middle section will make it much easier to put the legs on.
We chose the Maryland as it allows the kids to sleep on one side of the tent and us to sleep on the other with a spare bedroom for clothes, loo etc. I would definitely recommend the front awning as additional space to cook in.
It's a big tent though and will fill a 10x10 pitch so make sure the site you are going to knows you are coming and book yourself an XL pitch if they are on offer.
Taking the tent down is just as easy but highly recommend opening both front and rear doors before dropping the centre as it makes getting the air out much easier and quicker to roll away.

Absolutely one of the best and most spacious tents on the market and well worth the extra £'s. We brought our Maryland XL footprint, carpet and awning from Yeomans Outdoor and have used them several times, the latest being 8 nights in Newquay this August. There was myself, my partner, teenager son plus friend, teenage daughter and our two year old son, plus our oldest daughter and 3 uni friends(supposedly in an adjacent tent but spent most of the time in ours!). We were able to all eat together in the porch + awning at 2 large tables with plenty of room. Also the vast living room accommodated all of us with no problems and as the weather was at times atrocious with high winds and very heavy rain and whilst some carbon fibre poled tents around us took an absolute hammering with disastrous results, our Maryland stood firm and we were all thankfully warm and dry. I would recommend this tent to any large family wanting extended holidays and to be honest I could quite happily live in it!
We intended to upgrade to the 2011 version at the end of the season as there are a few changes Outwell have made such as zip-up curtains at the windows and the new Outwell wind stabilizer system but we've decided to wait to see what the 2012 range brings as we are more than happy with the tent we have.
With regard to it's size, yes it is a monster but we have had no problems at any sites we have been to and although it is best to book well in advance many sites do have pitches large enough to accommodate it.
We previously owned a Vango Diablo 900 and were always amazed at the amount of space we had with that but have been totally blown away with the Maryland it truly is a home from home!

I had many great trips away in my Maryland.
Big enough to accommodate 2 x families of 4!
This a huge, heavy tent! so give yourself some time when pitching. I got it down to around 40 mins, and was able to pitch on my own.
Tips for pitching:
* peg the for corners of the main tent area out. Leave the doors open
* thread the roof poles of the dome through the sleeves, but don't do the leg poles yet
* thread the roof poles on one side of the dome and attach the leg sections and pitch as if you were pitching a tunnel tent.
* do the same at the other side of the dome - the tent will now be `standing` and taking shape.
* attach the leg poles for the dome, and then do the rest of the remaining poles in any order
* thread the entrances poles, pitch and peg out - JOB DONE
By doing it this way, you can pitch it on your own (no need for a second pair of hands to go inside and lift the dome section up) It doesn't put excess stress on the flysheet either so don't worry.
Loads of room in the tent, huge porch with enough room to set up your kitchen area. Storage rail in the porch, and plenty of pockets in the bedrooms/living area.
We got battered by wind and rain in Newquay and the tent was like a limit, didn't budge!
Be careful not to pitch it too tight, as the dome section can stretch the seams beyond what they're designed to and let water in!

I have the 2010 model of this MONSTER tent, and have read other peoples reviews on this house of a tent.
One word for this tent - EXCELLENT.
Just used it for the 1st time the other week, and we had to put it up in massive winds which I have to admit was a task but we managed it. We went with two other families who have the Outwell Hartford XL tents, and one family broke some poles putting there tent up due to the high winds and the consent winds over the following days split a pole of the other Outwell Hartford tent. As for my mobile house of a Maryland, it with stood the battering, with no damage at all.
We also had quite a lot of rain while we were there, and unlike other reviews I read we DIDNT have any issues with our tent leaking! It was warm and dry inside.
It was by far the largest tent of site and had comments about how nice and large the tent is, we are a family of 7, but some nights had 14 of us sat around in it with room to spare.
I also have the front awning for the tent, carpet and protective footprint, which makes the tent even larger and more comfortable.
This tent is a must buy for any large family, you will NOT be disappointed.
I will upload some photos so you get an idea of its size and feel :)

Whats that coming over the hill is it a monster, no its the Maryland xl. This tent is something else, only real downside is pole bag, bought extra bag on wheels to carry them but small issue. Fab tent all round, spent a week in Wales in it and it stood up to very high winds and stood firm. Had no problems in the rain either. Only paid £499 for it in the yeomans sale well worth the money. As reviews before have said its a massive tent with big living area and a good sized porch ideal for kitchen or storage area.Found it very easy to pitch, red poles first porch last. Only other little qualm would be is that the ground sheet is tight at the porch corners but pitch wasn`t level so put it down to that. Highly recommend this tent its a beauty ;-))

Just spent £840 on an Outwell Maryland XL package deal from and internet supplier, used it 3 times and it has leaked every time, supplier has just taken it back and are going to “test” it with a high power hose, cant see them being able to replicate the three days of solid rain it just had on our last outing! The supplier say it is meant to be weathered but if you read Outwells FAQ page it clearly states that their tents do not need to be weathered at all……who’s telling the truth? It is made from sealed seam 5000mm HH material, this should not leak at all….Probably made in China by someone earning $1 a day who does not care if it leaks or not…….Were gutted. Don't know weather to have another Maryland or another Outwell tent ,maybe a vermont or just have our money back, other than the fact it leaks it’s a great tent!Mahoooooooosive, anyone else had a leaky Outwell?

This tent is almost a home from home, if you like comfort then this is the tent for you. With large living and sleeping areas. Plenty of ventilation for those sticky summer evenings. Took my wife and I 45 minutes to pitch from start to finish. Before you book your camping trips I would suggest checking the sites pitch sizes as this is a very large tent and not all sites can support such a large tent. But dont be put off as is truly a fantastic tent and very good value for the money
