I really like my side awning - after a couple of times putting it up you get better at making it more secure and setting it out to the back of tent rather than middle as others have said in previous posts is what works best.

May have bought a front extension instead at time of buying tent if, like the more recent Oakland XL, ours had had a rain canopy over the door.

Transformed the tent and we used it for cooking in mainly as well as eating etc while children were asleep in the main tent.

Probably more usable than the front extension as it fits on usual sized pitches better.

Need to perfect the positioning along the side of the main tent to get it to seal properly and avoid flapping.

Would be nice if they provided a ground sheet with it too.

I bought one of these recently following 2 wet camping experiences after buying my Oakland XL. We just couldn't bear the 'wet neck' experience when using the door in rain.

The first attempt at pitching was on a short break and the over tent guys ended in hooks, nothing like the Outwell pitching video. We hooked them to the pole clips that gave the best tension and spread.

However, our last break was a 7 day one, giving more time for experimenting. Following comments on the forum here, we have extended the guys and peg them out as normal. The extension, as others have said, gives a lot more room, allowing cooking to go on outside, but in shelter. It does keep the rain away from the door. Yes, the over tent bit does flap about, but adjustment of guy positioning can nearly eliminate it. All in all a good buy, only let down by the silly guy ropes.

We recently purchased the side extension and used it this weekend. I really liked the extra space it gave us. We used it for cooking in and leaving footwear outside. It isn't easy to put up although that was our first time so may be easier next time. Definitely worth the annoyance of getting it set up right. Would definitely recommend just a little patience when putting up!

I agree with the other reviewers that the instructions were a bit vague in the correct position to pitch it. After a bit of faffing around (especially with the guys), we managed to pitch it well enough for our 4 night break. Incidentally, we managed to keep the extension fairly central to the door.

We found it wobbled a bit when it became windy, but we didn't suffer from the material flapping around. We put the wobble down to the positioning of the front guy ropes, so we'll rectify that next time.

Overall, we found the extension really useful and rarely had need to use the front door. We used it for cooking on the one side and a table on the other side.

Whilst we were lucky that we didn't have any rain, we purchased some really useful foam interlocking mats from B & M, which reduced the amount of dirt trodden into the main tent.

First time we have set this up properly and used it on a 3 night camp in the blistering sun and no wind.

A necessary piece of kit for oakland xl owners, gives a bit of outside cooking area. Easy to erect and would suggest clipping the band nearest to the tent behind the tent main poles. Also align it all to the left of the tent door then the flap goes over the tent main poles.See pictures. Big enough for our large kitchen unit and space around, great for taking shoes off so as not to muddy tent, another tip is to tie a spare guy rope to the clips so as to be able to get them over the tall tent if you are not tall like me and OH.

All in all a good bit of kit that does what it says on the tin and highly recommended if you have an Oakland XL.

The extension is great for all your kitchen equipment, muddy boots ect. It is not good in strong winds and I would recommend that people take it down if strong winds are forecast. It is easy to erect and dismantle, but the instructions are vague and like a lot of people we struggled at first with the right positioning of the extension, but once we had it sorted out, nearer the back of the tent, it was ok, the part that goes over the tent did flap about a bit in the wind we attached the lines to the corner guy ropes and that seemed to help. The middle still flapped a bit, Can anyone give me some tips on how to pitch this better thanks

A nice little extension that fit our cooker/kitchen down one side and room still for a chair or two. Great for taking shoes off before entering the tent and keeping the rain off you while doing so. We added an awning carpet to stop any mud/grassy feet. The instructions were a little unclear and the first night we found the part that goes right over the tent was flapping about,next day I looked at the diagram picture on the bag and it shows the extension at one end is between the window and door which leaves the other end right back at the bedroom, we had it evenly placed so the door was in the centre. We moved it towards the back of the tent and the top lipped over the back pole and the other end lipped over the steel pole just after the door hence much more secure and no flapping about, this did mean that everything had to go over to one side otherwise things would be in the way of the door.

We bought our extension as part of the tent package. I was looking forward to seeing how this compared to a Gazebo. We didnt find it difficult to put up but where exactly it was supposed to attach on the other side of teh tent we weren't sure. The Outwell video shows a close up which could be any guy line. However, after some trial and error we opted to attach it to the corner guys of the tent. The canvas then looked to be in the right place and flapping could be avoided. I felt that the guy lines may cause some problems along with the sliders if they were rubbing against the tent itself but never quite managed to avoid this. I will be looking at this problem again next time we pitch.

It was spacious and dry and whilst we had no need to put the windbreak around the opening for extra protection this would certainly provide more privacy and shelter.

When the extension is up there are some tension straps running from one side to the other. In order to prevent tripping I bought some eco groundsheet (marvellous stuff, cheap and effective) to cover these.

All in all a very good acquisition and generally brings the tent within the standard pitch size.

The extension is a great feature to have especially when it is raining.We use this as the kitchen area and use the windbreaker as extra privacy across it.

The first time we put it up we were not sure how it was supposed to fit, the instructions are very vague.It flapped a lot in the gale force winds we had.We have now put guy ropes onto it and it has made it more secure and eliminates the flapping.

Has withstood gale force winds and 14 hours of non stop rain.

We made an evening meal and ate under it at a table in the rain.

The only downside I would say is it would have been nice to have had a front door to it.
