This is our third year of camping in the Royale Hampton 4 and we have tested it under every condition imaginable.

We had an Outwell before and this is miles better. It is very easy to pitch even in torrential rain. Last summer when all the other campers around us were sheltering in their cars for the night when their tent zips tore in high winds, we had no problems.

After a week of almost constant rain last year, the tent was completely dry.

We love the sitting room; it's like a mini conservatory and all our friends end up congregating in our tent each night as it's so roomy.

We bought the extra side canopy and this was great for longer holidays as you can move all the cooking equipment and non-valuables into this area leaving the tent feeling very spacious. It also means that you can leave dirty shoes under the canopy and keep the actual tent clear of mud and mess.

If Royale read this, can you make the next version of the tent with a zip-on fastening for the canopy. The canopy is a bit tricky to put up and, although secure, catches the wind and makes a bit of noise at night which can be disconcerting initially.

This aside, we love this tent and are looking forward to more excursions this year.

I had the open canopy which came with the tent, but the poles snapped in a gale even though the Hampton 4 stayed sturdy. I bought the closed canopy from the web link above which is excellent as it affords more privacy when closed and keeps everything dry in the rain, though it has not seen a gale yet! Hope this is helpful.

Cannot fault this tent, it ticks all the boxes for a weekend break. It is real easy to put up - 2 steel rods, 2 fibreglass rods that slot into the steel rods and 2 rods for over the doors. Simple, me and my 8 year granddaughter can put it up in 15 mins. All colour coded so no need for an 'Idiot's Guide' book.

Sewn in ground sheet a must to keep bugs and drafts out. Three doors: 2 side doors with half mesh and 1 full zipped mesh at the front. Large living area for a 4-berth tent with large windows at the front and sides so good viewing and also lets load of light in.

Zipped opening for EHU on one side only so you would need a large lead if facing the wrong side of the EHU. Nice touch is the zipped openings into the bedroom for EHU. The bedroom has 2 doors and you can also roll up the divider to make one large bedroom.The Gobi 4 carpet is a perfect fit for the bedroom. Ten pockets hang between the 2 bedroom doors, essential I think for us girls to put our bits and bobs in.

Good ventilation (3 in the bedroom and 2 at the sides of the room).

It is a sturdy snub nose tent which we love and would not swap it for any other weekend tent. Very happy with colour, size and ease of putting it up and down. Life don't get any better than this: sitting in the tent watching the sun set - with a drink of course!

Just returned from a 6 day stay in Scotland where it was very wet to say the least. Despite the campsite becoming flooded our Royal Hampton 4 never let a drop of water in. The rain was coming down like stair rods but not once did we feel the tent would let us down. Can't say enough about this tent, it's faultless! Although used last year our tent never saw rain, it did this year and has just has the mother of all tests! Well done Royal.

Just returned from 2 nights camping with my o/h and my sister and her o/h, I took my Oakland XL whilst she took her just bought Royal Hampton 4. The wind was very very strong most of the time but no rain, must admit both these tents stood up well. The Hampton has a strong sturdy feel about it, it looks so similar to the Oakwell xl in style and design except colours are different. The Oakland is slightly wider being a 5 berth.

The Hampton has adjustment straps on the bottom of each steel pole (4) only on one side on the oakland. 4 of us sat in the Hampton comfortably, with table, chairs, kitchen stand, cooler box, odds n sodds, around the ends comfortably. She had a queen Ann bed in there between the two bedrooms (divider comes out) Yyou could probably just about squeeze a single air bed along side it, but 2 ordinary doubles comfortably . 3 doors on the Hampton, fly screens on each door. You can put the canopy on either side, it is plenty big enough for your cooking etc. It stood up very well no flapping about on the roof like the Oakwell does (reason extra guys halfway along the roof section of the canopy ) Also has elasticated ties were you peg down on the canopy, each time the wind tried to lift it, it just sprang back down.

Plenty storage pockets inside the tent with ehu cable entry, even cable entry into the pods. Forgot to mention that flyscreens come halfway down your door giving you that bit extra privacy and warmth at the bottom. A doddle to put up. She paid Ł199 for the tent, free carpet, Ł15 footprint, Ł55 side canopy, front canopy poles came free.

Would I recommend this tent, well apart from not being tested in the rain all is well, didnt feel we had to sit and babysit it through during the winds.

Just spent a very comfortable weekend in our new Hampton 4. What a super tent, so easy to put up! This is our third tent, we previously owned a Vango Diablo 900 but decided to down-size as we wanted a roomy but easy to put up weekend tent. After much research we plumped for the Royal and we weren't disappointed. As I said it's so roomy in terms of living space and the numerous windows add a huge amount of light too. The sewn in ground sheet ensured we were draft free all weekend. The build quality and finish of the tent is of a very high quality and for the money (Ł175 inc P&P) we are highly delighted. The zip and waterproofing is particularly impressive. Now looking for a carpet and footprint so Well done Royal for producing such a great tent!

I loved this tent when we were viewing it at the local tent show. Roomy and east to pitch with great features (on paper).

The problem was that the taped seams failed where the loops for the fibre glass poles go through. This was on all 4 points and allowed a lot of water into the tent when it rained on a wet night in Cornwall (of which there can be many). PJ Camping agreed to change and although they said it wasn't a problematic tent there was another sat at the back door that had been returned that day for 'manufacturing reasons', which they admitted was sewing and tapes. Their display model had blown seams in exactly the same place as well.

To be fair they changed it without a fuss and offered a new fly sheet and inner with a stock of seam fixer or a new alternative; we opted for the latter. We are awaiting delivery of a new Coleman Mackenzie 6 Cabin and will leave a review once tested. For an additional tenner it seemed like a no brainer as the Coleman tent was the one we first looked at but at early season prices was just too much. Funny how these things work out in the end. Such a shame as the Hampton 4 had such potential.

Pretty much agree with the reviews already given. We used a double and 2 single airbeds in the sleeping pods and found it a little tight, perhaps would've been better with 2 doubles.

We found that we needed to keep the tent well aired, due to the sewn in groundsheet, there was plenty of condensation in the tent in the morning with 2 adults and 2 kids inside but plenty of room.

We didn't use the front door, we brought the matching canopy and had it on the side of the tent so we used this as the entrance/exit. My only criticism was the eyebrows above these as we kept catching our heads on it!

I found the tent very strong & sturdy, I only used the main guy ropes, didn't find any need to use them all as it was so sturdy. The tent was relatively easy to pitch too.

We found the side canopy to be a godsend as one of our days away was very wet! We were able to sit under it and keep dry and also cooked underneath (with great care!). I would highly recommend the canopy with this tent especially for a family, space would be very tight in bad weather with 4 people and keeping everything inside although doable.

There is plenty of room to stand in the tent and easily seat 4 or more persons.

We had one day of rain and no leaks and everything kept dry.

All in all a very good tent and I would highly recommend. We bought it for a weekend tent and am very pleased with it.

(Mostly) Really chufed with our new tent!

Plenty of room for a double blow up bed and 2 singles in the bedrooms.

Also we managed to squeeze 6 chairs and a table and a dog bed in the living area for 2 of our 4 evenings!

The front door is slightly annoying, the only layer (mesh, window and polyester layers) that fully zips the 'whole way round' rather than just down the sides is the mesh layer, so one evening when the wind was blowing in a certain direction the bottom of the door would lift slightly and would cause a draft, a couple of strips of velcro would have sorted this out, and might be something we add to it. Apart from this it is very well made, with covers (clear plastic and elasticated polyester covering every zip, so they are always dry. Even the electric point zip is covered by a 'skirt' / flap on the outside.

We do have a problem with the zip on the front door (see pictures) as it will only zip down most of the way, it is sticking when you get to the last 2 inches or so.

There are plenty of pegging and guying points.It went up a doddle! All very straightforward.

There is only an electric 'let in point' and velcro loops (for attaching light cable) on one side of the tent, maybe slightly restricting if your electric is being supplied from a point on the 'wrong' side of the tent.

Overall we are very happy with our new tent. We decided not to buy the side extension and went for a separate kitchen tent, after using the tent this weekend we are happy with that and don't think we need to buy the extension.

We paid Ł279 for tent, footprint and carpet.

How can I follow such a wonderfully descriptive and colourful review as Sat in a field. He has said pretty well all there is to say and I agree … it’s a very good tent! Although how he managed to get it for that price I don`t know, I thought we had a fair deal with a carpet and footprint included for Ł299.00

The OH and I have spent the last five years with what I consider a classic, the Outwell Montana 4(Monty), nearly perfect for us save for one problem, it’s a foot or thereabouts to short for comfort. The Hampton 4 address`s that problem quite nicely in fact the description cavernous is very apt. The width and bedroom sizes are pretty well identical to the Monty the living area being more than ample for a family of four. Having first looked at the Outwell offerings of Carolina M (bedroom to small) and Oakland XL (not quite) the only other to fit the bill is the near identical sized Missouri River 4, but at that price ! not on your nelly (I think outwell have made a big mistake by producing this size of tent only in poly/cotton) so the Royal it was then.

I found the build quality to be at least as good as the Outwell although because we had beautiful weather on our first trip its waterproof qualities remain to be tested. Just two small gripes, firstly the fly screen on the side doors can only be opened from the outside, not a great idea for me and secondly the metal guy adjusters which do hold very well when set are a pain to adjust…. Or maybe that’s just me. One useful thing about this tent is that we are able to use the front canopy from our Monty and as you can see from the pictures I think it works very well.

Finally,I like Sat in a fields idea about naming his tent, for me this is not a pretty tent having a rather macho appearance and that for me means its just got to be Arnie (as in Schwarzenegger).
