First experience of camping and chose this tent because of other reviews. Only used it once but we erected it with no major problems, have to make sure you know which pin each pole goes into as not clear at first. Great sized living space although I think the sleeping pods would be rather a squash for 8. I think 5 would really be a comfortable number. The tent is really well made and everything seems to have been well thought out. We also purchased the footprint groundsheet and carpet which added to the comfort.

This is a fantastic family tent and well worth the money, ABC camping in Swansea gave us a great deal with the footprint and carpet thrown in for free! The instructions are pretty straightforward however I would recommend a trial run before you take it away with you (we did not do this and it showed!). The bedrooms are a good size however there were 5 of us and I would only recommend another one person going in order to have ample storage space in each bedroom. The tent stood up to some vicious winds and a hefty amount of rain and did a great job in keeping us all warm and dry. The panoramic view porch was a lovely feature and provided somewhere comfortable to store our boots and cooking equipment as well as leaving enough space for us and our friends to sit while the children played in the living area. Taking the tent down was quite time consuming as we wanted to make sure it was stored correctly as we won't be camping again this year, however with practice I'm sure we won't take as long again. All in all this is a very comfortable and practical tent and I can't wait to use it again.

We bought this tent for size from new to accomodate my wife and I, plus 3 teenagers. The pods comfortably fit double air mattresses. The living area is huge with room for our dog cage, table and chairs plus kitchen unit.

It is fairly easy to erect with a minimum of 2 people working co-operatively. Having a footprint makes it easier to position and keeps the fitted ground sheet cleaner for packing up. The porch is really big too for storing extra equipment, shoes and luggage. The front angle is steep which does make it difficult to fasten the flap zips. We have had problems with some sites not having large enough pitches. I have also found that it has been difficult to buy Outwell replacement poles as the standard length packs are too short, so had to buy custom made ones by mail order. I have just bought Vango ones, and hopefully these will be less prone to split.

Our own tent is a 2007 Hartford L but it wasn't big enough for this trip so we borrowed a 2007 (I think) XL with an extension. We pitched in an absolute gale on the Lleyn Peninsula and it took three adults and a nine year old to hold down the flysheet as we battled it over the frame. It was very definitely a dark and stormy night and we expected at least the extension to disappear - but NO - these tents are made of tough stuff; other tents were flattened or abandoned but ours fought bravely on (and on, and on) through several nights wind and rain. The only damp spot was where the wind blew the rain under the ventilation cover on one of the pods.

After 7 days of abuse (not just from the weather - 4 adults and three kids and a dog inside) it stayed intact and when we struck camp there was not a sign of stress anywhere

If the later models are as robust as this one then they must be incredible - the only downside to ours is that the inner has to be pitched first and I understand the later ones are easier to pitch, but hey! if it survived THAT trip it will take anything

This is an excellent tent which we have used three times this year. First opportunity was Easter which was cold by evening but with a fan heater kicking out it was lovely and warm. We have just returned from a camping trip in Dorset and the tent slept 5 adults and 2 young children comfortably. My only criticism would be the bottom of the rear door only has two strips of Velcro to close it and so it does create a draft when it is windy and cold outside. I am currently searching for a product I can use to fix more Velcro down to seal this better.

We bought this second hand this year for myself, husband and 2 young children. It is a large tent which is ideal for us and gives us plenty of living space. We use the front porch to house our kitchen area. Its easy to put up although it does need 2 adults to do it. I would say it takes about 45 minutes to get it up. We have used it twice so far so there maybe other things we notice as time goes on. The only thing I don't really like is the main entrance door. To do it up you have to get right down to get it to close due to the angel its at. Fine for most but not if your not too agile. The sewn is ground sheet is fantastic, if you've ever used a tent without this you'll really notice the difference. We have struggled to get a carpet for it due to it being a couple of years old. Apparently the 2012 versions won't fit our one. So far its been a great tent and totally suits our needs as a growing family of 4.

Lovely family sized tent loads of space for the four of us ! Some might say a bit extreme for 4 but well worth it for all that extra space ! No one getting in each others way ! Relatively easy to put up too considering we had never camped before ! Great buy Can't wait to use it again! Bought the carpet and the footprint too also a great buy so easy to clean

We bought the 2012XL after having owned the 2008XXL. The attractions were the larger front porch and pitched all in one, (great for bad weather).

We first used it 06 - 08 Jun 2012.In North Wales. During the storm of the 08 June. We had to give in at about 8PM on the 08 and pack up. During very high winds and driving rain one of the bedroom pole sections snapped in two places. Making the whole tent very unstable. This and the high wind became frightening for the children.

When I arrived to camp, in company with other campers. My priority was setting up near them, they did not have EHU. This was my big mistake. It was an open/exposed location. I did not give a thought to the possibility of 50MPH winds. Well you wouldn't in June, would you!

If I had considered a better pitch location the tent would not have got damaged and we would have stayed until the 10 June.

I'll know for next time. I don't blame the tent at all. It is an excellent tent. It took a while to erect! This was only because I did not take the time to carry out a practise run at home and I did not read the instructions correctly. I did not peg down the tent prior to trying to lift the poles!

Lessons learnt :

* Practise erecting prior to camping

* Read the tent instructions properly. (Some or not written very well)

* Consider pitch location even if the weather is excellent on arrival. What if/when the weather changes

The HARTFORD XL has plenty of room. The panoramic porch area is great. The bedrooms are big. The removal of the third bedroom creates another entrance/exit. Easily put back in place at bedtime.

The footprint and carpet are 'must haves'.

By the way, where we purchased the tent. The family tent shop, Shepperton. They are replacing the damaged poles, free of charge. Thank You Lily.

Our family of 3 (2 adults & 11 year ld use this tent in longish trips to Cornwall and it's great.

It is technically an 8 man tent and I think that's fair. You could easily get 3+3+2 in there unlike some other tents that claim that size.

The living space is immense. I actually nearly took this on a recent camping trip with friends as it was raining and the interior is as big as our rain shelter/gazebo we use (the thought of a few drunk people in there put me off though).

I would highly recommend this tent if you want lots of living space. It does however take a fair amount of time to put up, even for a fairly regular camper like myself. Allow an hour on your first pitch!

I have the 2010 which is a little better than earlier versions, but the new 2012 model looks really nice with the wider porch area

Just been camping in the snow in this tent and overall had a good trip. Only bought a month ago and first trip with this tent, last went camping 2 years ago so a bit rusty. The tent had to put up with horrible conditions. The valley we were staying in lost electricty due to weather conditions, strong winds, sleat, snow, minus temperaters! The only problem we had was with the porch, it kept coming loose. I put it down to my lack of experience, weather and ground conditions but also lack of anchoring for this part of the tent.

The tent I would recommend to anybody wanting plenty of room. Found it good to put up and take down. Lots of good points.

Can't wait to go again.
