It was a very close run thing between the BL6 and the Montana Lake - we saw the BL6 on holiday in France, but with a dog in our family, the side porch on the Montana (and the extra space inside) is what swung it.

I have just put up the tent in the garden and it really does look the business - you clearly get what you pay for. It has been raining non-stop for 12 hours and there are a few very small leaks, which I am reliably informed are 100% normal for this type of tent, before everything contracts and it re-seals itself!

Putting it up was a slight chore at first, but having done it once you can easily see where time and effort can be spared - I am aiming for 30 mins next time.

Interestingly the Montana Lake is slightly bigger than the Montana 6 - hence the fact that the carpet we bought is a fraction short. Not a big issue, as we can put wet shoes along the edge of the (ridiculously strong) zip in groundsheet.

So far, I would say this tent is awesome and we cannot wait to use it in anger. The only reason for a 9 out of 10 is as follows (pay attention Outwell!).

1. At this price a trolley bag should be standard.

2. There are features on the Montana 6 which should be on the Lake - the Lake should also have the wind stabiliser system, and the ability to neatly velcro away the guy ropes when packing up.

3. The Montana 6 has a trolley bag (see point 1.)

These are however minor grips - for 800, this is a stunning tent. We will be getting the front extension, as the sloping front door is not great in the wet.But all in all, a great tent.

Don't know why Outwell didn't make this cotton version of the ever popular Monty 6 earlier?

It takes a very good tent indeed, and adds the benefits of polycotton! which makes it just perfect!

Easy to pitch, lots of space and storage! The optional front ext is pricey, but if your budget allows its a fantastic addition!

Pitched in under and hour on my own, so cant grumble!

When pitching, peg the tent loosely first, then attach the Z.I.G. Then square off and peg out nice and tight!

Don't be alarmed if on first use it lets a little water in when it rains - polycotton tents do this, after this first initial `wetting` its bomb proof!

We've not been camping since we were teenagers, and now with kids of our own we decided go again. So, with this in mind this is what we think of our Montana Lake tent.

We saw this tent at a show, and loved the size it provided in the living area. It was also, on offer at the time, and the sales guys did us a deal on some other camping essentials.

The polly/cotton fabric is cool when it's hot, and warm when its cold. Prefect for the British weather.

It is well made, with a bath-tub style heavy duty ground sheet and 2 sleeping compartments. Perfect for our family of 4 - sleeping for any more would be a bit tight.

The first time we put it up it took 80mins, but the second time it only took an hour.

A wonderful tent, which I would recommend to anyone!

My wife and I had to trade in our beloved Wynmaster, it has had 6 good years but alas we had more children! What an awesome tent! The polycotton makes a huge difference and although expensive it will last for years if well cared for, the porch is a god send for muddy children or removing wet clothes in the rain and maintaining a mud and water free tent, we had some seam leakage during a bout of heavy rain but once it dried out is was fine as the seams have now expanded as expected, apparently this is common place for all polycotton tents under their first rainfall. We have two adults and two kids under 3 - perfect for playing in the living area whilst under rain, the communal area is huge!

In terms of build and size this is a great buy, with the carpet and groundsheet also a must, it takes up a lot more room than the nylon tent but it is worth the sacrifice, it is very light and airy and the three doors are great in the hot weather, looking forward to more holidays away this year.

OK so we previously had a Khyam Cleveland 6 which was great space wise but with an addition of an Old English Sheepdog to the family the upgrade had to be dog proof!

I had set my heart on a Bear Lake 6 about a year or so ago as it had such great reviews and I wanted to move over to a polycotton tent, mainly because of warmth/coolness in the winter & summer and also alleviate the problem of the extra condensation you seem to get in a polyester/nylon tents.

So off we went to buy said Bear Lake and this new Outwell tent caught my eye, it looked familiar so I looked for the name, it was so new that they had only just pitched it, it was the Polycotton version of the popular Montana 6, The Montana Lake. We were immediately taken on this as the sense of space you get when you step inside. It’s probably due to the head height and the fact its not like a traditional tunnel tent it has almost straight inside walls and roof.

The sleeping config is also good as it has 2, 3 person pods of which one can be completely zipped out giving you even more floor space if needed. It also comes with handy pocket store on the front of each sleeping pod, handy for all those keys, loose change for the showers!, phones etc. It also has a storm porch which you can actually stand up in and take off any wet clothes, handy for those trips when you’re up in the Lake District.

There is plenty of natural light as there are full size windows at the front and large windows to the side. There are plenty of ventilation points throughout and all opening windows/doors have insect screens. All windows have fabric curtains and they can be adjusted to various states of opening

OK so to pitch you need 2 people as its much heavier than a poly/nylon tent, I would recommend a footprint if at all possible as this makes things much easier in keeping the bottom of your tent nice and clean and also when packing away, tent can be folded on footprint rather than damp grass, a wise investment (considering you could be paying up to £1000 for the tent)

The tent is almost self supporting when pitching as you have handy sew-in pin straps that become taught when you insert the pins into the tent poles. So you peg out the back corners and the centre back main guy rope and your away.

Inserting the ground sheet was a bit tricky at first maybe because it was the first time I had done this, I had to give the zip a really good tug in some places as it seemed to stick was a bit worried that I would pull too hard and break the zip but it all went ok. I may have to trim a few bits of excess ground sheet around the zip so ill take my scissors with me next time. I'm sure I read somewhere on the Outwell instructions that you could fold away tent with ground sheet but that would make the tent so heavy when coming to re-pitch again or having to dry out after being pack away after wet weather.

The bedroom pods went in very easily and not too fiddly and the adjustable straps helps you get the right tension

The first proper pitch took us about 45 mins pegging it all out but that will improve over the coming months.

The only one thing I was really disappointed with was the carpet. It seems that the carpet sold to me to go with this tent is the Montana 6 carpet. Honestly it’s about 8-10 inches too short (im going to check this out with Outwell direct). My other niggle was there were quite a few loose/untidy threads which could have been trimmed off during production/final QC check. (I'm in the trade where this type of detail can make or break a product) remember you are paying top dollar for this tent.

All in all a great tent so far. It's going to Snowdonia at the end of May 2011 & The Lakes in July so I'll keep you updated!
