We bought this tent second hand last autumn, after enjoying our first camping experience in a Hi Gear Gobi 4 tent during a weekend festival.
We wanted a tent large enough to accommodate both ourselves, plus two teenage children and a friend each, plus all our paraphernalia. This meant we needed three bedrooms and a large living area, and the vermont xl looked ideal. Unfortunately, we didn't realise, until we set it up, that our particular tent has a 2 x 4 x 1 bedroom layout, which is not ideal. If anyone knows where we can get a 2 x 3 x 2 inner tent, it would be great to know.
Our first trip out was something of a disaster, arriving late due to bad traffic, we had to set up in the dark, firstly in pouring rain, followed by thunder and lightning. Not an experience to be repeated by two inexperienced campers and after two hours, we were soaked and we spent a further half hour bailing the tent out, as the rain had puddled on the canvas, then run in under the doors. After we and the tent dried out, we had a great time!
The second trip was much better, it was dry and light, the kids helped and we had the tent up in 30 mins, and everything pegged out, pumped up and set up in less than two. The tent withstood some gale force winds, so we've obviously figured out how to put it up properly and it stayed dry too.
Looking forward to our main summer trip now.

Brilliant tent - we're really excited to have upgraded from a 5-man Coleman tent (which leaked and slept three comfortably.) to this one this year. We're a family of five and although the two youngest sleep in with us most of the time, this tent will last us years - we can arrange the sleeping compartments to give us all space to share now apart from the eldest, who is thrilled to have her own bedroom at last! And in the future, we'll be able to spread out more and the kids will be able to have friends to camp with us too.
The lounge is really spacious and comfortable and the built-in storage is fantastic.
Our first attempt at putting the tent up took 1.5 hours, which we thought wasn't bad first time! We had expected to spend hours putting the inner compartments in but it was all-in-one and that was a great relief!
Really spacious, cosy and smart - we window-shopped all last summer and talked to many happy owners of this tent, it seems we'll have many happy holidays this year!

This was our first big tent and wow was it big! paid just under £400 for the tent and carpet and footprint as a winter bargain back at the end 2009 and we did a total of 4 trips with the Vermont XL.
I would say the only reason it gets a 9 like many others on here we found the porch area never sat right unless it was on absolutely flat ground so water rolled in under the storm flaps. Also if you went out the front door in the rain water rolled in, however this could have been my inability to pitch it right!
Fantastic size and the Vermont stood up to some awful weather last summer in Derby with out any issues apart from the poor porch bathtub groundsheet. As we had a carpet and there is no rain shelter over either of the side doors we did not use these much last summer but the previous year the weather was fine and the side access came in handy. Almost all the windows can open as fly screens as do the doors, this is great for allowing air through the tent. You never really feel like you are in a tent, unlike a dome or vis-a-vis. Cooking was done mainly in the front porch. Its is a bit of a struggle to get pitched and we like others tried a different method each time but never really found any that truly made it easy for just the adults(the kids were busy laughing)with that and the restrictions in size of these horrible fenced and gravelled pitches on some sites can make choosing a suitable camp site awkward.
We took the decision to sell our Vermont in January this year along with the carpet/footprint and we made a nice profit so sort after are the Vermonts! solely due to the difficult pitching and the fact that the kids wanted to start pitching there own tents. We did have the option of a small caravan for this year but after considering all the extra costs we have now bought a second-hand slope front Sun Valley 6! complete with a side extension and carpet for a little over £100 and look forward to posting a review. Now considering either a small Vango or the small kyham tents for the kids!
All in all if the weight/size/ pitching is not a problem for you I would highly recommend the Vermont XL, you never feel worried that is going to blow away! and the space is amazing, our earlier model we felt was nice and light and airy with the grey interior, something that's lost a bit on the newer models with the darker interiors.
If it wasn't for the kids not wanting to share a tent with us oldies any more I would have kept it, despite the size and weight ect!

Great tent, really spacious with plenty of room for a large family. The down sides are the pegs are mostly plastic and can't be hit to hard or will bend or break also not good in stoney ground. This tent is very heavy but is really quite easy to put up I would suggest watching the videos on you tube on how to put up. We camped in 50 mile an hour winds and two upright poles bent also the mud valance at the front ripped and the door pulled open in the wind. The Outwell site says it stands up to 55 to 60 mile an hour winds but I would not suggest it. Also I would not suggest putting up or taking down in the rain as water will get in to the inner tent and you will need to dry out before you can use it. Overall the tent is spacious and has lots of useful features for family camping.

I cannot fault this tent, the quality is excellent. Some reviews have mentioned the sloping front which is an issue in the rain, I asked this question before buying the tent as most of the Outwells are designed like this. I was told that it is purposely designed in this way to make it aerodynamic in high winds. My worries were unfounded as because of the porch area there is no problem with rain into the main tent.
We have the footprint and the carpet and I'd definitely recommend both, although we don't use the carpet in high summer. We haven't yet used the bucket groundsheet in the porch as we find it nice to have grass in the front area, I'm sure we'll use it at somepoint though.
This tent comes into it's own in wet weather and we've spent a few wet days, perfectly dry with plenty of room for entertaining the children. While other campers were having to bale out their tents we were feeling quite smug in our Outwell.
Pitching gets better with practice but it does need at least 2 adults. My only slight grips are that the cable entry point should be on both sides as mostly we want the power to come in near the wardrobe. The cable runners on the roof should also go on both sides and the plastic pegs are not suitable for hard ground.
Would definitely recommend.

We used to own a 2007 Hartford xxl so we needed a tent that gave us the same room but was more practical and the Vermont XL has given us this. We have plenty of room to leave our kitchen set up in the porch area in the front and stil sit a table of four for dinner. The bedroom sections are great as you can stand up in them and as all the partitions come out you can move the beds around within them as you want.
We had quite bad rain on our first trip and it stood up to the test without any leaks. My only bad comment on it is because the front slopes and the door opens to the side rather than from top to bottom, if it rains but is still warm, you can not really leave the door open as you get a lot of water come onto the bathtub ground sheet. If it had a small extension over that door then this would sort the problem out. We overcame it by attaching our tarp as a porch area so we could leave the doors open and look at the rain without getting wet.
In terms of getting the tent up, it is really easy and with two people it could be put up within 15 mins. To make it easier when erecting the tent make sure after the back poles are put in you have someone trying to push air into the rest of it from the front as that will make it easier to lift the rest of the poles off the ground.
I love this tent and haven't seen one since that I think would do a better job.

We originally upgraded from our Khyam Tourer tent to a large Sprayway tent purchased from Yeomans in Northampton in time for our May 2010 bank holiday camping trip to Snowdonia. We really would have liked a Cabanon Biscaya, but the cost was outside our budget.
The tent was a disaster, it was poorly made, the weather was not adverse on our trip, but the tent started to disintegrate at an alarming rate. We took photos of the splits that occured & the poor stitching, etc and upon our return we took the tent back to Yeomans who offered to refund or replace the tent with no quibble whatsoever.
It is then that we took some time browsing around their display & opted for the Outwell Vermont XL, paying a small difference in the value of the products.
Our first outing was to Norfolk (after first erecting the tent in our back garden), the weather was dreadful, but luckily we found a good method of erecting the Vermont XL on You Tube, which made much more sense than following the instructions provided with the tent.
It is a large tent and you really do need 2 fit adults to erect it. We have two able bodied Children (and one without a clue) that were also of use during the process.
Once up, the tent offers spacious accommodation. There are 3 good sized bedrooms, a generous sized living area with a built in wardrobe and a front porch area with a separate ground sheet which we use for cooking & to accommodate our camping rotary line, etc.
The build quality & finish is excellent, with loads of innovative touches. The only criticism is the blue plastic pegs, which are ok on soft ground, but on stony ground bend & damage easily. We have replace approximately half of these now with metal pegs.
The tent is straightforward to take down, but not easy to squash back into it's bag.
We were so impressed with the quality of the tent that we have since replaced much of our other camping kit with Outwell products (sleeping bags, etc).
All in all, a great family tent that really is a 'home from home' on your camping holiday!

We love this tent and the only reason I've not given it 10/10 is it would be better if the porch ground sheet was sewn in. We are a family of 5 and have no problem fitting everybody in, we have a 17 year old son & two little girls aged 3 & 10 months and so have 2 double air beds a travel cot and a cmp bed all fitting in the bedrooms no problem. The wardrobe fits toilet & all clothes hanging nicely, we keep living area as clear as possible so that little ones can play and keep all the kitchen equipment in the porch which can easily fit 3 chairs, pushchair & table. We have had every type of weather from wind to terrible rain and we have had no problem with the tent. We can get the tent up in just over half and hour and get it down in about 40 mins getting it back into the bag is the hardest part.
All in all a fab tent which we have used 9 times this year and will be ready to go again next year.

I absolutely love my tent and there is very little I would change about it.
The positives:- It is huge! Three bed rooms, one wardrobe, one large porch and a large living space. Superb quality (camped in very windy and wet conditions with no problems at all). The little extras like the low light windows and lantern cable ties, to name but a few, add to the luxury.
I can't say there are any negatives but more room for improvement:- There is only one cable entry point, which isn't the end of the world, but one either side of the tent would be better, the only lantern hanging point is in the main part of the tent and it would be better if there was also one in the porch area. The fly-screen doors which are black are not visible in the dark and after a glass or two of wine it is easy to forget they are there!
When I purchased the tent I was a little concerned I would have trouble booking a pitch due to it's size, but I have not found this to be the case. I would say approximately 98% of camp sites have no problem accommodating this tent and the remaining 2% either will not accommodate or will charge extra I just avoid this 2%.
I believe I have found the perfect family tent and I no longer suffer from tent envy.

There really isn't much more to add that hasn't been said about this tent. It really is our perfect tent. Absolutely huge! Lots of living space and the quality of it is superb. The smoothest zips I've used in a tent, no snagging or sticking! It did take us quite a bit longer to pitch than we expected on our first time out with it, but I'm hoping that gets better with experience. However, some of the problems were due to us not being able to hammer the pegs into the ground. I think the concept of the different coloured pegs is a great one, but plastic pegs in hard ground doesn't seem to work too well. A couple of them broke - we will be replacing them for standard and/or rock pegs this week - and this is why I've dropped one star overall. Taking the tent down was a doddle and we did manage to get it back into the bag without too much difficulty. Although I had been into this tent a few times before buying it, I hadn't appreciated just how big the wardrobe was until we used it. Loved being able to hang my clothes up properly and there was so much space on the floor inside it to hide empty bags/toys/dirty washing/shoes, etc, etc, etc. Only problem then was deciding what to do with all that space in the living area! We didn't really have any wind and not even a drop of rain so I can't comment on how it would stand up to that, we were lucky enough to have a hot and sunny weekend - but with that came a hot tent. Which is where the two side doors come into their own, we kept the mosquito nets shut and opened the outside doors to create a through breeze which was lovely. Very, very, very pleased with this tent and can't wait to have our proper holiday in it later this year!

Manufacturer's Description
The Vermont XL has been discontinued, and replaced for 2012 with the Vermont XLP - there are 2 fundamental changes in the new XLP - the first is that the windows are now all tinted which will have the effect of minimising the glare from the sun but also of improving privacy. The second is that the front of the tent has been re-designed to incorporate a Panoramic Room - a large fully enclosed front porch area with a 4-zip multi-door opening which allows you to open up the entire front of the tent converting the room from an enclosed porch to a sun room .
The XLP has it's own listing on this site.
