I spent a long time trying to work out what is going to be the best tent for my needs. I am a first time camper and spent hours at different camping specialists looking at tents. I finally settled on the SunnCamp Vario 600 as it seemed to tick all the right boxes. Our first time was this Easter and I am writing this the day after out return as it is still fresh in my mind. I had bought a purpose made footprint groundsheet which we laid out on wet grass. The tent was then rolled out over the footprint and we started to thread the five main poles. This was more tricky than first thought but it was the first time and raining so there may have been an air of panic. The ends of poles fitted in the ring and pin system which seemed straight forward. We then pulled the tent up and pegged out. Total tent erection was approx 2 hours, but we are new and that did include the sun canopy. Bedroom pods were easily fitted and have storage and hanging loops to lighting. We had ours configured in a 1 large and 1 small. In the large we had the double air mattress, a fold up wardrobe and still room to spare. In my daughters bedroom she had her single ready bed, a chair and numerous toys, so very pleased with bedroom space. Both pods have a large flyscreen at the back which is in line with the external flyscreen on the flysheet. The living space in great with plenty of room for 4 chairs and table to be left up with loads more room to spare. We had a mains hook up which is fed through the dedicated zip at the top of the grounsheet. There is various velcro loopds which allow you to hang a light and keep the cable out of the way. We used the storeroom as the toilet area and also for shoes and toiletries, again a good size. The sun canopy was used for the cooking area and allowed plenty of room for the outside furniture to be kept in overnight.

Due to cold nights, we had a fan heater on all night for 3 nights and backed that up with a gas fire in the mornings. Condensation was minimal and did not create a problem. Roof lights are great as you get the early morning sun to help warm up your tent. Stitching was of good quality and no flaws were found in the manufacture. Zips were of a good quality with no catching and would move freely.

I agree with previous review that the window system could have been better thought out due to having to go outside to open or close the windows and the main front door should have had a flyscreen.

As a summary, I am please with my choice and I know I would have picked fault in any tent that I had bought. Looking a the other tents in the campsite I stayed at, I would not have swapped mine for any of the others. It is roomy, light and airy, comfortable and practical. The downsides are that it is fiddly to errect and take down (for a novice) and the lack of door flyscreen. The only reason it is not 10 out of 10 is that it does not put itself up, buy lets see what 2010 brings!

Go and buy one, you will not be disappointed.

Good all round tent, size is perfect for a family of 5. Easy to erect and because ground sheet is fully sewn in, less of those creepy crawlies come in at night.

The only problem I have got with this tent, is the windows, the fact that they open them from outside, means anybody who fancies a peek during the night, has a free hand. The thing that brought this problem to light, was the wind. We woke up in the morning after a windy night, to find all the windows were open, if it had rained that night, the rain would have came in through the vent mesh. I have call sunncamp technical team, and they say its not a design fault, I beg to differ. Any way after 2 summers of poor weather, I'm now looking for a motorhome.

I bought this tent as an upgrade from a 4-man dome tent, as I fancied a bit more space for living and cooking in bad weather on extended camping trips with the kids.

Generally, I'm happy with its first outing.

As it's a tunnel tent pitching is straightforward - no having to work out which poles go where. I pitched it ok solo in the garden as a practice before departing, but needed a bit of help in the slight breezes of an open field in Eskdale. But with 2 eager kids 'helping' it went up ok. The poles catch frustratingly on the sleeve inners when threading, but I think there's no avoiding this.

I noticed some flaws in the quality of the stitching and panelling during this outing. Nothing that's likely to cause a failure (famous last words), but it's annoying to see wonky seams and mis-shapen panels in a tent of this supposed quality. Maybe I'm being overly picky, but I know it's going to bug me every time I notice it. The triangular storage pockets in the corners of the bedrooms also seemed a poor design - nothing stays in them due to gravity's inexorable influence. A square pocket with a top opening would be far more practical. There are plenty of square storage pockets in the living area, but you know what it's like in bedrooms.

We used the side storage area as a camp kitchen. No real problem with this. The small window in this extension can be opened to provide ventilation.

However, general ventilation in wet weather proved to be a bit of a problem. The external window flaps do not have the ability to be guyed out as a mini-awning over the mesh at the top of the window. So when it rains and you lower the flaps to stop rain coming in throught the mesh you lose all your ventilation. So if it's warm and wet your only option is to leave the front door open for ventilation. (At least the small awning provides some protection from rain coming in through the front door - if there are favourable winds.) However, as there is no double zip there is no barn door effect and without a mozzie net on this door you run the flying insect gauntlet if you want wet-weather ventilation. I may make a bit of an aftermarket alteration and sew some guys onto the window flaps myself to sort this out.

All in all I like the tent and the extra space I have. My daughter thinks I've sold out though and it's no longer proper camping anymore. She claims I'll be getting an electric hook-up next. (Hmmm, now there's a thought.)
