This is a superb tent. We have had several camping trips in it, and have been surprised at just how well it stands up to the British weather. The polycotton is great as it both keeps you warm and keeps you cool in the hot weather. We (two females) manage to pitch it without glitches now, although the horizontal poles presented a bit of a problem as we couldn't reach them! We now put the three middle poles through the net while the tent is still on the ground as the 'nipples' do catch on the netting, and need putting through carefully. The carpet is a must, and has transformed camping for us. We leave both the hanging bedroom divider and the zip in groundsheet attached when de-pitching. It's heavy, but we can manage it well together, and makes like much easier for the next time we pitch up. Happy camping!

This is a really excellent tent made of poly cotton canvas which keeps you cool on the sun and warmer in the winter but beware - this makes the tent is heavy. The zips and fastenings are very sturdy and the whole tent is generally very well made. The design is well thought out for instance the corners of the tent have tightening straps so you can pull the sides down lower after you have pegged it out, the windows and doors have many options including net, clear plastic and velcro secured curtains. The window in the side doors can be opened but leaving the door zipped up. The ground sheet is fixed to the top by 3 very sturdy zips enabling you to pack them separately - keeping the top of the tent cleaner. All the poles are the same length making putting up much easier. The only slight criticism is that the securing horizontal side poles are slightly too high for me to reach easily - I am 5ft 4 in and I would have liked a skylight. Easily the best tent we have bought though due to its bulk and weight we keep another for festivals.

Re: side bars catching in the net as you thread them through, I wrap a single turn of electrical tape around each pole to cover the nipple, I have no problems with the threading through, try a small sticking plaster from the First Aid kit this also worked, don't use 'masking tape' sod to remove

Just read your comment about side bars. I've found if you connect 4 bars together, thread it from the back first making sure the little nipples are facing down, it should thread straight through. Then connect the last bar with the screw on - I've found this to be easier

This is my third Outwell tent and I would not buy any other brand. In fact we bought this tent as soon as it was released. Last year we planned out first camping in France and finally knew we would be assured of hot weather, so upgraded from the Indiana 4 to the Bear Lake 4. They are almost identical, with the major differences being that the Bear Lake is cotton (keeps you warm in chilly weather and lots cooler in hot weather) and it is slightly wider than the Indiana. We bought the carpet and can honestly say that I feel like I am now doing 5 star camping! We are only a couple with one spoiled dog, and find this tent very spacious. The 2 sleeping areas can be converted into 1 by unzipping the central 'wall' and we have 2 large campbeds and a 4-shelf wardrobe and still have lots of room for the dog to roam around. Outwell was one of the first manufacturers to add velcro tabs along a central vertical seam, so you can add an electric light and not have trailing wires (we use an alarm battery as power). Funny how many of the special features in Outwell tents are now being copied by other manufacturers!

We were tempted by the Bear Lake 4 after seeing it at a local campshow. Even though the wind was horrendous and the rain lashing down it stood there obviously weathering the storm a lot better than the other tents on display. We have been camping for many years and our last tent was a Coleman Sahara which we had for 5 years (in fact we had 2 as a mouse ate the first one!) We liked the Sahara as it had so many options of which door to use after being pitched. We noticed that this was also true of the Bear Lake 4 and therefore decided to throw caution to the wind and purchase a new tent. We are very pleased that we did. This tent is remarkably sturdy and is very spacious. Being upright and not sloped on the sides it gives plenty of headroom. It is cool on hot days and warm and comfortable on cool/rainy days. We also purchased the side extension and have to agree that it is not the best of fits or the most easiest thing to put up but it is well worth it for that extra bit of outdoor space. We actually sat out in it most nights much to the envy of our fellow tenters and caravanners alike. I would also suggest that you spend that extra bit of money and purchase the carpet. This really completes the tent and makes it feel very homely. It also takes away that chill that you can sometimes feel through the groundsheet. We have to admit to cheating and leaving the groundsheet zipped into the main body of the tent. We personally just find it easier to erect, take-down and store this way. Our only complaint against this tent would be that every time we put the side stablising bars in(the ones that run from front to back of the tent) we get them caught up in the netting. This can be quite frustrating when trying to beat a rain cloud or in the semi dark! We are also concerned that we may end up ripping this netting. Next time we erect we are going to try taping the little nipples down before putting these rods through. Anyway all in all we are more than pleased with our Bear Lake 4 and look forward to using it to its full potential next year.

Bought tent in March with the side extension and carpet, have used it 3 times so far this year, have used it in very wet, windy, very hot and sunny weather, it has performed exceptionally well in all these conditions and been very comfortable to live in throughout those weather conditions. Very glad we took the time to research/read reviews about this particular tent. We would like to thank all the other Bear Lake owners who submitted reviews which helped us make the correct choice. We have had lots of seasoned caravanners and campers alike admiring this tent. We now look forward to many years of happy camping with our Bear Lake 4.

Been on one camping trip with our new Bear Lake 4 and very impressed. True, it is heavy and definitely takes

2 to erect but we weathered two nights of appalling conditions - heavy rain and howling gales and the tent stood up extremely well. All the window options are great - they can be any combination of open, netted or curtained. Two side windows are both optional doors.

We are new to camping and are very pleased we chose this tent.

The Bear Lake 4 appears spacious with stand up height in most of the tent. It is very high quality with strong zips, seams and tie backs. I particularly like the 'flat' front door which avoids losing space due to sloping tent sides. The window/door combinations are excellent giving loads of flexibility depending on the weather/climate. My husband and I use the tent so there is plenty of space for two, less room for four but manageable. There is also the option of taking down 'half' of the inner sleeper which gives more space in the living area. The tent is attractive, cosy and draught free. It takes two people to put up the tent as it is rather heavy. This is not a complaint and I believe this tent is the best one I have ever bought in 40 years of camping!

The BL4 is obviously smaller than the BL6, but it is still definitely a two-person job to get it up safely. My advice would also be to start at the front when pitching, working to the rear. I agree with Carolyn24 that the tent stands up to quite heavy downpours, and in addition it is stable in high winds (if pegged down correctly). The ZIG and fitted carpet (the latter an 'extra' ) make the package draught free, cosy and warm. We use 'cling-ons' to stop the carpet bunching up. We also have a side extension for ours, but surprisingly for Outwell, it is not a particular good fit - it's a bugger to get the roof bit over the top of the 4, and when you do it partially covers one of the side windows, and is a bit draughty. Also there is no groundsheet with the side extension - so unless you run one up yourself, you will be trailing grass onto that nice warm fitted carpet! Although the BL4 is marketed as a 4-berth, our view is that it is really a two adult plus 2 kids tent - unless the four adults are VERY friendly! Finally the BL4 is spacious, and there are plenty of storage pockets, but a bit more in the way of somewhere to hang things would have been nice (and the velcro straps to run the light cable - if you have EHU- are 'handed', meaning the cable will only fit one way round the inside). I believe newer models have a small zip to feed in the EHU cable, but ours has to be passed through the ZIG. Not a problem - just a minor niggle. Ignore the RRP - a bit of bashing the keyboards will find a new one for under £500 - our was price matched down to even less than that!
