Our Oakland XL has given us excellent service and we found it very spacious especially as there is only the two of us. The first time we put it up we thought it we were going to rip the material as it seemed to be very tight. We had not slackened the adjustable straps where the poles and pegs are located at the base of the tent. I think the best tip I can give to any person setting up this tent for the first time is to slacken off all the straps before locating the poles etc. We can thoroughly recommend this tent based on our experiences with it. The panoramic window setup is excellent and feels more like sitting in a conservatory than a tent, blinds can be drawn for more privacy if required.

I have previously reviewed this tent after using it one shortly after buying it. I thought Id now review after a couple of years use. Really like the tent. After 2 years of using it approx 3 to 4 times per year its still looks very good and stands well. The space both inside the living area and the bedrooms is very generous. Got the nack of putting it up quite quickly now. We have recently bought the side extension which adds shelter for cooking. I wish the storage bag for the tent had wheels to make it easier to move its very heavy. I am always very careful when putting the front fibreglass pole in as seen some reports of the pole snapping. I always ease into the plastic on the steel pole then slide round to the front slowly. That aside a lovely well made spacious tent.

We bought this tent from Go Outdoors in summer 2010 together with the side extension. It has been used for several week long breaks since then and has always stayed dry inside even in heavy rain. It does blow about a bit in the wind but is mostly secure. The SIG keeps the bugs and water out and the mesh screens will give plenty of ventilation if we ever find ourselves camping in hot weather.

The windows in the front section give loads of light giving a really spacious feel and there is plenty of room in both sections. During rainy periods, many tents feel quite claustrophobic with the doors shut, but with big windows all the way around the front section the Oakland XL remains pleasant to sit in.

As other reviewers have commented, it can still be a fiddle getting the poles connected and the fabric often sits very slightly to one side when erected, but this does not affect the function of the tent.

The tent did collapse on us in gale force winds in June and two front poles broke and one of the metal connectors bent. (See “angled ferrule” in the message forum for how we got a replacement part.) In fairness this was probably because the pegs came out of the water logged ground rather than a weakness in the tent itself. Have now bought some delta pegs; as other reviewers have said, the pegs supplied are not sufficient for a British summer!

We considered buying a replacement tent rather than repair the poles etc. It was then that we realised how good the Oakland XL really is. There was really nothing available which gives the same height, space and light without going significantly upmarket or just being too big for two of us to erect.

Outwell have made modification to the 2011 and 2012 versions which should make this an even better tent. (Outwell- how about a second cable entry point on the other side of the tent?)

This is the third year using our Oakland XL and we love it! We invested in a side extension and front extension and these make all the difference although quite tricky to position on tent. Although it is a 5 man tent there are only 2 of us and so it’s extra roomy, spacious and light.

We have camped in all weather conditions now and have found it to be sturdy enough to withstand some very strong winds and have stayed perfectly dry in torrential downpours.

The first time we put up our tent one of the metal corners bent so much from the pressure put on it that it snapped and we had to find a camping shop nearby, luckily it was easy to replace, we bought two which were re-enforced and a lot stronger. Since our first hap-hazard attempt at erecting our tent we have become much more proficient and it takes us approximately 50minutes including extensions. The tent pegs supplied really aren’t up to the job on hard stony ground and so we have replaced them with some solid heavy duty ones.

Outwell clearly put a lot of thought into the design of this tent and since buying our tent, have adapted the design slightly such as curtain design, Velcro strips to secure guy ropes and poles and small canopy over side entrance to make it even better.

We bought our Oakland XL to accommodate mum, dad, teenaged daughter and pooch from Go Outdoors in July 2010 when they were doing the deal to include side extension and carpet. Since then the law of sod dictated that every time we used it the heavens would open and the wind would howl, and I mean HOWL!

First time out we bent one of the front bendy pole joints while trying to take it down in 70mph winds. It should come as little surprise that you can't get the joint on it's own, you have to buy the whole pole. That single pole cost a third of the price we paid for the whole package!

We've recently come back from enduring the 'Fifty Year Storm' in Cornwall where our tent was pretty much the only one left standing on the site. I should point out that it probably wouldn't have been had we not invested in better quality pegs as the ones supplied are fine for not much more than rain and wind free camping.

The tent performed admirably, though it does flex a lot in high winds and is very noisy inside. Pretty scary for an inexperienced camper or young children. The carpet is nice to have but as it's synthetic fibre be careful if you're pitched on a slope and carrying food and drinks around inside the tent.

It's a nice tent but at the end of the day you get what you pay for. It's spacious and airy and well put together and ideal for families. The only thing that stops me giving it ten out of ten is that it's not made of canvas. That's why we've sold ours and are saving for something more heavy duty.

We bought this tent to use as a weekend tent. We are a family of three so for weekend breaks, we thought that this tent would offer us all of the space we needed, whilst being small enough to dry easily at home should we need to.

To pitch this tent, including setting out the footprint and guying and pegging out fully, usually takes us a maximum of 30 minutes, with the tent being ready for use, all beds blown up and made, cupboards set up and clothes unpacked within an hour. Perfect for a weekend. The only thing we find is that the tent never seems to look 'quite right' when we've finished pitching it. We can always get one side to look straight, but then the other side seems a bit 'higgledy piggledy'. One of the steel poles seems to not sit out as far as the other and no matter what we have tried, we cannot seem to fathom it out. This doesn't have any bearing on it's performance, however, just a bit irritating when you get the OCD about neat looking tents kicking in.

The tent has lots of windows and is therefore very light and airy. The living area has plenty of room for drawers, cupboards, a table and three chairs, and we still have a good amount of space in the middle of the tent so we don't feel closed in and cramped, even in bad weather. There is one big door at the front that can be rolled up or put up on king pins to give shelter and there is one door on the side of the tent. Both doors have mosquito nets so you can have air circulating without allowing the bugs in.

The two bedrooms are good sizes. We manage to just about squeeze a double and a single airbed into the larger of the two pods allowing us to use the smaller one to house our toilet and dirty clothes. This works for us at the moment as our son is only three so we prefer to have him in with us.

We have just returned from a weekend break where the tent was put to the test with a fair amount of rain (some heavy, some the more persistent drizzly kind of rain) some brisk breezes and a little bit of sun for good measure on occasions. The tent stood up to all that got thrown at it well. However, because of the exceptionally bad summer we have had this year, the campsite was getting very muddy so we are now buying the front awning to give us somewhere to take off muddy shoes, as well as a more sheltered area for cooking in bad weather.

The only downsides, and the reasons for scoring the tent just 9 rather than 10, are pretty standard on all Outwell tents, and to be honest, maybe a little nitpicking on my part. And those are the fact there is only one EHU entry point (I prefer the option to have the cable coming in on both sides of the tent) and the plastic pegs that Outwell have taken to supplying. I really dislike them but we just take them straight out of the bag and use our own pegs.

All in all, a great family tent, easy to pitch, easy to strike, and easy to dry out at home should the need arise. Would definitely recommend it.

I thought I'd reviewed my tent, but apparently not.

It's a lovely spacious tent, which is sturdy and comfortable. It easily sleeps 4 (two adults and two children age 4 and 10) and the living area is perfect.

I would strongly recommend a carpet, as without it the floor is a little cold and uncomfortable.

It only gets 9 from me mainly because it's a little awkward to erect, but I guess that will get better with time.

I've Decided to update my original review to give people an Idea of long term ownership of this tent.

We got ours in 2010 and have used it for about 20 camps ranging from 2 days to 5days.

I will start with my niggles, yes the doors only having the velcro at the bottom still annoying but I can live with it and yes it is still a tight fit for the steel poles.

The curtains on the 2010 model toggled at the bottom so its a bit of a pain getting on the floor to fasten/unfasten (glad to see Outwell addressed this on 2011+ models)

Condition of tent is pretty much as we 1st brought it, I always clean it when erected of any spots of mud etc, Dry it same day when I get it home after packing up wet. I do this by partially erecting it in my loft, using side extension poles rather than steel, then placing a fan inside left on overnight.

I have always used the footprint and never had to clean underneath the SIG.

I replaced all the guy runners for linelocks as they are simpler to operate and don't slip, I haven't had a single pole break including the front one people seem to have problems with, I may pitch it differently than others though, I use the 4 corner method as everyone else does but have the steel poles as far away from the tent as possible, I can then reach/adjust the top bit to make sure the tent is level on the poles(this takes away any stress to be able to move the fabric straight, I then attach the front brow pole on one side and put in the other side next, as the steel pole isn't pinned yet it moves around so no struggling with the tension of the front.I then put the poles in the pins on the non adjustable side, followed by the adjustable side. Finally I throw in the back fibre pole then readjust the tent as needed.

I pitch this tent solo but whilst sounding a complicated method it takes me about 10-15mins to get it up.

I hope this may help those with 2010 models and snapping poles.

All in all the tent has stood up well to all sorts of weather and is almost as good as new, not a leak in sight or any serious problems.

With all the quality control problems that I see on this site from a variety of manufacturers, when you get a good un from Outwell it will last for many a year, I expect to easily get another 2-3 years out of this tent before it needs replacing, but I feel the need for polycotton WL5 goodness next year, even so I will be keeping the Oaky 5 and still use it when I get a WL5 next year. Another bonus will be I can use the extension and carpet and footprint on the next tent too.

Overall 9 out of 10 just because of them curtains and doors.

I bought this tent after suffering in smaller, cheaper tents for some years. Normally, only myself, my lad and a friend camp. However, this year my wife decided she'd like to try out camping, so, I bought this tent. Myself and my son used it first for a weekend and we were impressed by the headroom (he's 6' 2') and size. The day went to take it down, it blew a full gale and the front pegs blew out. However, the tent remained sturdy.

Lat weekend, the time arrived for my wife to try out camping. The weather was forecast to be rain and high winds, so not good for a first experience. We got the tent up in about 45 mins and once everything was inside, my wife was the second person to be impressed by the sturdyness of the tent. Over the weekend, the tent survived gusts of 55mph and lashing rain with no qualm being felt about the tent collapsing.

The only faults I can find with this tent is the silly plastic pegs supplied with the tent. I've uprated mine to an all steel set. Also the door arrangement which tends flop in and let in the rain if you're not careful, but I've ordered the side extension to combat this.

Overall a fantastic tent and the wife has booked us another 2 nights away as she was so impressed.

Me and the wife and dogs have used the tent 3 times, the last time we used the tent the ferrule on front of the tent buckled with no undue pressure. Reading reviews this is common. We went to go outdoors for a repair, only to be told that Outwell will not supply the part, so we had to pay 32pound for a new complete set, what a rip off, its not as if their tents are cheap. Love the tent but wont be buying Outwell again
