3 Reviews of the Montana 6P Roof Protector

By: ExRex  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2013   Rating:

Used the roof protector on our Montana 6P for the first time this weekend. It was a little fiddly to fit, partly because we also fitted the extension for the 6P - yes, you can fit both reasonably easily (see photos posted) - and also because we found it needed two relatively tall people to fit it. This may get easier with practice, though.

The light reduction in the tent, especially in the morning, was really nice. With the weather being so warm this weekend we fitted it silver side up and this had a noticeable cooling effect in the tent.

The best feature became more evident over the weekend. We had pitched partly under a tree and, had we not fitted the roof protector, we would have had a huge cleaning job on our hands because of all the bird excrement deposited, some of the staining from which would probably never have come out of the tent roof. The roof protector cleaned off well, though, meaning it and out tent can look their best for our next camping excursion in a couple of weeks.

Despite the relatively high price, I felt it was well worth the money.

We purchased the Outwell Montana 6p roof protector because of all of its benefits, because with our previous tent we were used to darkened sleeping compartments and a roof lining inside the living area keeping the tent cooler in hot weather.

The roof protector has a silver side that reflects the sun keeping the tent cooler which really does make a difference to the temperature inside the tent and has a black side to absorbs the sun keeping the tent warmer on cooler days . It darkens the tent which is brilliant first thing in the morning keeping the children asleep longer ! It also protects against bird droppings, tree sap and uv rays prolonging the life of the tent.

It's a bit of a challenging to put on but with practice it becomes easier . I actually wouldn't have purchased the Montana 6p if it hadn't had the roof protector because for us it would have been to light in the mornings and too warm to sit in in hot weather.

We purchased the Outwell Roof Protector for our Montana 6P in the hope that it would give the tent a few years extra use. After all we have spent a lot of money on our tent which was a big investment .

In theory the Roof Protector, should do for the roof what the footprint does for the groundsheet. I will admit, at £70.00 I was at first a little skeptical how affective it would be, in that it was another 'Optional Extra' Montana owners will feel obliged to buy and something else to put up/pack away.

We ordered the Roof Protector a few months ago but only got the change to use it at the end of the May Bank Holiday. As we were going away for 5 nights, we initially had the Montana 6P Front Awning on as I wanted to get some use out of it.

Unfortunately the Roof Protector cannot be used if you have either the Front Awning or Front Extension on. Due to the weather been temperamental, we decided to take the Front Awning down early. This gave us an opportunity to give the Roof Protector a trial.

As it was hot, we had the silver reflective side up, its definitely a two person job. You don't need to be tall as you can maneuver it on using the guy lines and use the elasticated edge to sit it on. With practice it can be put on in under 10 minutes.

It sits securely yon the Roof and I do not feel the guy lines would always be necessary. Once on the tent felt cooler as well as darker, which I liked. For at least 1 bird. When we took it down after 2 days it was easily cleaned.

We had the Extension on for 3 days without falling target to bird poo. Soon as we put the Roof Protector on it was a target

We actually woke up later then normal due to the absence of morning light coming thru. I would give this 8 out of 10 only because it does not fit on with the Awning/Extension.

Manufacturer's Description

The optional Roof protector provides protection from damaging elements like UV-radiation, bird lime and tree sap while countering the effects of extreme temperatures. The large panels are attached across the pole sleeves leaving a gap between roof and the protector allowing air to flow. One side of the Protector is silver coated, the other is black.
