Bought this from GO for 199, and can say it is money well spent. We had a couple of practice pitches. And we went away last weekend in it. Me and 2 12 year olds pitched it fully in an hour, just taking our time with it. This will get better with practice. A great sized tent for 6 people. The living space was more than enough for 9 of us in the bad weather, we played charades! It rained constantly Friday night and most of Saturday with no leaks at all. Just woke up Sunday morning to a bit of condensation, but not surprised with all the rain we had.

I have given it 8 just because of the weight of the tent and poles. I have them separate now, and the bag could be a better design, awkward to carry. But I love my tent, can wait to go away again.

Like most reviewers, we bought ours from Go for around £200. We're a family of 7, our children range from 18 to 7, our eldest will probably have to start bringing one of our smaller tents for himself, (we also have two Ion 3's and an Electron, all Hi Gear) as our youngest gets bigger, we won't all fit. Our dog always camps with us too.

The best thing about this tent is the huge living space, we've used this tent twice so far, once at Ravenglass, Cumbria and last weekend we went to Fort William.

We can fit two fold out picnic tables with seats and two folding canvas chairs with plenty room to spare.

The extra storage pockets are very useful, though the cupholders were a little pointless, and to be honest, we don't even use them. Definitely need good lighting in this large tent in the evening.

Putting up the tent took 3 of us around 30 minutes, not rushing it.

Guylines are high visibility, but there are lots of them, although fair to say we haven't had this tent up in a gale yet (we have with the others).

Annoying not being able to open the windows from the inside, but that's fairly minor. Full ventilation in the roof would be nice in good weather, the central flap only opens to reveal a window in the roof, no opening.

I'd like windows in the rooms, but that's probably just because I like to see the outdoors.

One good idea, but which we haven't used as yet, is the small zip access for electric cables to enter the tent and rooms.

Bag is very heavy when packed and bags compartments don't fully unzip for complete access. A little tough to repack, but finding it easier each time, as we figure out the best way to fold it. Perhaps adding wheels to a bag this heavy would be something Hi Gear could consider? My husband is going to end up with a hernia if he has to keep lifting it. (We're actually considering buying a small trolley from Screwfix to help move it around).

If you can manage the weight and the hassle of repacking this tent, this is a very good family tent.

We have just come back from our 6th holiday in this tent. Yet again it lives up to every expectation we have. This year we added the porch to the tent also for a bit of additional cooking space etc however it is in the 2011 fabric so doesn't match and looks a little tacky!

This tent generally takes 45 minutes for the 2 of us to erect but is fairly simple and easy after a few goes. We only have 2 of the bedrooms in our tent as we use one of the bedroom areas for additional storage space.

I really do enjoy staying in this tent for long periods of time, and would happily have a 2 week break in this as I don't feel closed in at all with the high ceilings and centre area. We have splashed out on the carpet - couldn't get the hi-gear one so got the equivalent (Gelert I think) which originally when I saw it thought it was a big old rip off - but actually it came in useful. We also have the wind break which makes for a nice area in and outside that can be private if required. I love this tent and plan to have many more happy holidays in it!

Having looked at the newer model it looks tacky and inferior quality - can't quite understand why they have changed this?!?

We were looking for a tent with a good head height for the living space as well as separate pods/rooms. This one was on offer at Go Outdoors a while back so we purchased the tent, the carpets, the footprint and the canopy. Fortunately we had a dry run of putting up the tent in a friends garden - because the 'ring and pin' system for pegging down the tent takes some getting used to - we did an online search to see what we had to do, as there were no instructions for how to use the ring & pin system with the tent! It took the three of us (a couple with a teenage daughter) over an hour to put this tent up, even after a dry run. Having the footprint groundsheet helped a lot in setting up the tent (even though this tent has a groundsheet already sewn in). It has lots of windows/vents with fly screens and a sky light window in the main living area - but it still can get very warm in the tent on hot days. Its a great family tent with lots of space - the not so good side is the time it takes to put up, the 'ring & pin' system, the amount of space it takes up in the car boot, and how hot it can get inside the tent in warm weather.

We bought this in may 2011 for £220 plus the carpet and its the best money i`ve spent, lovely spacious living area, carpet makes it extra cosy, hubby and I just took it on its first week away, pitched in half hour,(most of that was pegging in guide ropes) then the same to do air beds, unpack and pour a glass of wine!

Had bad rain one night and wind, stayed dry as a bone and moved less than our neighbours Outwell in the winds, only downfall is I would like more ventilation in hot weather, eg able to open the big windows in living area, but apart from that cant fault it, husband took it down himself in 20 mins and it packed easily into the bag, pegs were nice and strong, even though our pitch was rock hard. Bedroom pods are cosy, don't let too much light in the mornings, just about enough room to get changed in. This tent easily sleeps 6, though you could get 3 kids in each pod and more in sleeping area if you needed! Has an extra porch area outside tent, but will probably invest in the canopy as handy for bad weather.

Tent does get very hot on a warm day, but thats ok as we enjoy sitting outside having a drink!

So glad we bought this, excellent value.

We have had a great week in the sahara 6 from Hi Gear. It was put up in the rain and down again in the rain. It took every bit of weather that the Scottish highlands could throw at it. Difficult to pack away though. Can't understand how you guys have managed that. I called Hi Gear's head office and they said that the tents are 'vacuum' packed. If you could advise us how to pack this away I would be most grateful. Cos I would probably have scored it a 9 if I could get it packed away

We used ours for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was really good. Only problem we had was the poles round the main entrance. Couldn't work out how it fits! There seemed to be one small red pole and some random black poles with some bends in them left over after constructing the main part. I don't know if we'd been given the wrong poles but couldn't find anything in the instructions. Anybody have an idea?

Bought my tent when Go outdoors had it on offer for £199, used it for the first time July. Needless to say I did not pre-erect it, my first pitch was pouring with rain and it took three of us an hour to fully erect it, maybe more a reflection on our poor skills though. Tent was fantastic during four lovely days of rain. Bargain.

AMENDMENT TO PREVIOUS REVIEW!

NB - The Sahara 6 was replaced in 2010 by a newer model. We have not used this model but have viewed it in Go Outdoors and we are HUGELY disappointed.

The newer model has a smaller fitted groundsheet, tatty looking fabric and a serious lack of vents.

This is not the same tent we bought or reviewed above. After a couple of long inspections it seriously appears that rather than improving the previous version they have actually gone backwards.

PLEASE be aware that our review was for the 2009 model only and that while a lot of it may still be true you can't take it for granted and you will need to inspect it in the shop yourself.

We would not have bought this version of the Sahara 6 as there are better tents in the same price range whereas we could not have said that last year.

Manufacturer's Description

Outer pitching first, the Sahara will keep you dry whilst putting up the spacious inner bedrooms via Easy Pitch technology.

A spacious family tent with a 3.8m diameter central living area is designed for up to 6 people to spend the week away from home.

Protected with a 3000mm Hydrostatic Head, the Sahara 6 will withstand the rain and water from the sky and the reinforced groundsheet stops water seeping into the bedrooms and living areas.

Plenty of ventilation points means that you can keep cool in the warm, or warm in the cold whilst the PVC windows allow huge amounts of light into the living areas.

Along with all of this, the Sahara 6 has hanging fittings, a double guy system, large porch and electric cable zip to name just a few.
