Our first large tent.

Bought it on a sale from Go Out Doors, with the footprint, carpet and porch.

We have camped in torrential rain and very strong winds and never had any leakage or anything!

The tent has never let us down. There is plenty of room for a grown up family of 5 and two large dogs. The porch fits on the side and you have plenty of room for a cooker and table.

Have thought about getting a more expensive tent, now we are getting into this camping lifestyle, but can't fault this one.

Great tent at a great price, especially if you can get the porch, footprint and carpet thrown in!

We have had our tent now for three summers and it is as good as ever. It stood up to severe weather warnings May half term without any problems. It is spacious, strong and waterproof. We will certainly buy another one when ours finally becomes too old. We also have the carpet and porch. Easy to assemble as well. I have put it up several times on my own.

We have just spent 4 nights away in rain every day the tent did not leak and was very good

I have repitched it the garden to find out that one of the poles has spilt after the first use.

Other then this its a brilliant tent :)

I think the porch may be a good idea as we had lots of muddy shoes and we could of tried and kept the mud in there then in the living area

Go Outdoors sale this week and after purchasing the Kalahari 8 tent several weeks ago, we looked into investing in the porch due to the unpredictable British weather. It appeared the Porch for the Kalahari 8/10 is unavailable due to the sale.

However, when looking through the display models I noticed the similarities between the Kalahari porch and the Zenobia 6 Porch. Checked the online dimensions and there is approximately 1cm difference within height and width. I took a big chance and purchased the Zenobia rather than waiting. Please see the pics I have posted for reference, but I can confirm that the Zenobia 6 Porch will fit the Kalahari 8 tent.

We've just been camping with some friends of ours and they have a Kalahari 8, and they were very positive in their recommendation of it. So much so that I thought we might invest in one ourselves as our growing family is needing a bit more room.

But here's my gripe.

This morning the new brochure from 'Go Outdoors' arrived through the door, and I saw to my delight that they were selling the Kalahari 8 with a 'Save 50%' sticker on it. So instead of paying retail price of £600 I would pay only £300.

Being a 'if something sounds too good to be true' kind of guy I decided to take a look on the Interweb and see if this really was a great bargain, and no of course it's not.

For a start, it turns out Hi-Gear is just a Go Outdoors brand. They have a web-site that makes it look like it's a proper company but it's just a brand. They are careful however not to tell you that anywhere on the Hi-Gear website. I think I'm right in saying the tent is made by Gelert, so I assume some deal was done whereby that model would only be made under the Hi-Gear brand.

Secondly, our friends bought theirs from Go Outdoors for £200, so where and when is this tent ever sold for £600???

So if you want a Kalahari tent, you can only buy it from Go Outdoors, at the price they dictate, and there is no price competition.

So I'm just a bit annoyed really. Go Outdoors is trying to pull one over on us by using a brand which does not really exist to make it seem as though you are getting a great deal on a tent which no one would ever pay £600 for.

Maybe it will go down to £200 at the end of the season and I can get one then.

Just returned from our first long weekend camping in the Kalahari 8. Purchased from Go Outdoors in the sale for £199.

My wife, myself and our 3 year old. Unfortunately the weather was not in our favour. One guy I spoke to said it was the worse weather he'd experienced for 5 seasons. The tent was simple to put up, it took my wife and I about 40 mins in total, including the guying which was pre-attached. The Sewn in groundsheet was excellent. We had no problems with leaking or condensation despite the horrendous weather. We left one bedroom down which gave us more than adequate room for table and chairs. I would highly recommend this tent. We used 2x tarpaulin for the footprint at 3x5m each and overlapped them slightly. All in all a solid good value tent for the money. Next thing on my list is the porch!

Fantastic family tent, especially with the porch area for cooking, keeping a wet dog to dry off, extra storage room! New to camping and this tent is so easy to put up and collapse. Large bedrooms that can be divided into four bedrooms or all the family sleep in one side and the other end for storage. Plenty of storage pockets for plates etc. Velcro straps all over the place to hand lights etc, really well thought out. Big living area made super cosy with the carpet, home from home and I would recommend it to anyone.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS TENT:

* Fantastic size (massive but without looking oversized) for our family of 2 adults, 2 children (aged 12 + 9) and dog

* The four double bedrooms mean us grown ups get a room, the kids get a room each plus we have a 'dressing' room to keep our clothes in. On colder trips we take one of the internal dividing curtains down and all sleep in one big bedroom

* Easy to put up - got it down to under 30 mins now (not including putting up porch)

* Lots of pockets to store bits & bobs

* Can stand up in each room

* Fantastic value for money - bought this last year from Go Outdoors in sale for £179

* x 2 doors with zip up fly mesh

* x 2 windows which each roll open with zip up fly mesh

* x 4 sleeping compartments each with zip up & fly mesh doors

* Door comes with poles which can be used as a canopy

* Fits back into bags (x 2)

* Fully sewn in groundsheet

JUST A FEW NIGGLES:

* Some sites do charge extra

* We have suffored minor leakage & some condensation problems

* 2 bags - does take up a lot of room in car

We also bought the footprint, carpet and porch too.

The footprint is great to protect the groundsheet of the tent and provides a little extra insulation. It's also good so you can see how your tent will be pitched before putting the tent up. We do, however find if it does rain puddles of water do get trapped between the footprint and groundsheet which can sometimes leak through a little bit.

The carpet is wonderful! Although a little bulky when packed away, this does protect your groundsheet, adds that extra bit of insulation and makes the tent look homely :) We also bought a couple of cheap (non matching) tent carpets for a whopping £5 each that fit nicely into the bedrooms again giving you warmth, extra insulation, protecting the groundsheet and making it cosy.

The porch is fantastic to keep muddy shoes, kitchen/cooking equipment (NOT bbq), food, bin etc even though we find it an absolute pain to put up! This does not fit back into the bag it came in if we include the poles and there is a small gap between tent & porch but still wouldn't be without it!

All in all we absolutely love this tent and feel so lucky to have chosen this as our first family tent :) BUY IT!

Fantastic tent, very easy to put up and very easy to take down. It only takes me and the wife 30 minutes to put it up and we do not file for divorce whilst putting it up! All the poles are the same and slide in and out very easily. Also, the tent actually easily fits in its bag no matter how badly you fold it away, good for when its windy and you need to get it away quickly.

The tent is spacious and loads of pockets for your stuff. We only put one bedroom up and have the rest as living space. Its bigger than our living room at home!

I would recommend buying the footprint. This not only protects your tent but also makes it even easier to put up by giving you a guide to were to peg.

This tent can also with stand the worst weather including wind. If people say theres has blown over they can not have putit up right, as ours stands strong whilst others are getting blown all over the shop

Yep can easily say the best tent we have had.

Great tent only used one bedroom pod for 2 adults and 2 children. Loads of room and the awning held all the kitchen kit and a fold up 4 seater table. Only gripe is it is hard to keep the large end vents closed when it is windy so the tent losses all its heat. But like I say great tent. Me and an 8 year old pitch the tent and awning in 30 mins in a fair breeze, not bad for our first ever camping trip.

Manufacturer's Description

An updated version of the Kalahari Elite, the Hi Gear Kalahari 8 Eclipse is a spacious, stable and comfortable tunnel-style tent with two large partitionable bedrooms in a face-to-face layout, roomy enough for you, your family and all your gear.

The bedrooms comfortably sleep four at each end of the tent, in 2+2 inners with breathable polyester walls. They're made using darkened 'Eclipse' fabric that blocks out daylight, keeping it cool and dark inside so you get a better night's sleep. The bedrooms can also be removed, to give you extra storage space, or room for dirty gear.

The large living space has two large windows and hanging storage pockets to help keep it tidy, organised and liveable. Multiple vents along the roof help air flow throughout the tent.

The sewn-in groundsheet couples with the fire-retardant polyester flysheet give you a ventilated interior that's completely protected from draughts and downpours. The two doors can prop and extend out for extra shelter, or to expand your relaxation space.

Other useful features include the water-repellent zips and dual electrical cable access points. Pre-attached high-visibility guylines, reduced pole sleeves, and the sewn-in groundsheet make pitching quick and easy.
