Like the others my main problem is the front opening. I'd like to know if the Montana front extension actually fits before I spend £150 buying one.

We used this in France for 2 weeks in 2009. One day it rained heavily and we spent the day in the tent slobbing about and playing cards etc. Really nice to have the carpet, but the side extension was suggested so that we could enter through there - into the carpet area - we didn't get one!

Its good for us as our kids are 14 and 16 and want their own space - we have the middle room. Putting the tent up isn't too bad although on the two small sites we had in France having the footprint was really useful as it helped position the tent well in a tight space. The kids are both scouts so this may be an accessory you might consider as they want to put up the tent. The vacuum effect is also an issue so we leave the inner doors partly open and put someone inside when erecting the tent. Looking forward to the next event.

Follow up to previous review - just spent 2 weeks in this monster tent in Cornwall. All weather conditions thrown at it - heavy rain, strong winds, sunshine - and it took it all in its stride. Plenty of room for all our camping equipment (and we have lots!), clothes and kids toys. Six of us sat under the canopy area one night and there was still enough room for people to get round. Really pleased with this purchase - sure, the front sloping door is a bit of a pain when it comes to wet weather, and it is a heavy tent but these are minor niggles compared to the luxury it provides. In fact, fellow campers experienced tent envy when I showed them around. I really need to purchase a smaller tent for weekend camping but I have been spoilt by the size and quality of the Vermont XL that I don't think anything else would live up to it!

Oh how I love my new tent! after one too many wet weekends in our old Outwell Family Dome L tent, we decided we really needed to upgrade to a tent with a sewn in groundsheet, and after much research settled on this one.

The first time we put it up, it only took about 40 minutes (I'd read the other reviews on here and watched the brilliant youtube video beforehand!). Took a bit longer the second time, on a rather more uneven pitch, but still pretty straightforward.

I love the space in this tent, and although I was sceptical about the need for the wardrobe section, it did help to keep things a bit tidier in the tent. I also like having the 'wet' area in the porch and then a lovely clean 'no shoes' sewn-in groundsheet living room. Another good feature is the versatility of the bedrooms; it can be set up as 3 separate rooms; a large and a small room or even everyone in all together.

The only negative points so far are that it is really hard work to get back in the bag. We had problems even with two of us lying on top of the thing. It's also very heavy, which generally isn't a problem as it's not a backpacking tent, but at the last site we went to you couldn't park the car next to the pitch and we struggled. Also, the front of the tent is sloped so when it rains, loads of water come in every time you open the door.

Was a bit concerned looking at some reviews, in particular the side extension (annex) but this has proved a great tent. An over indulgence maybe even for 6 of us but it makes it a really nice place to be even on rainy days. Last site we were at I overheard someone saying its a hotel as we put it up. Just about right.

Two things to note though that are common themes it seems. One is putting it up. Seems that we have tried all combinations of those poles, from end to middle. Depends how they sit when you thread them as well as whether the tent is wet but in the end the key is to get one main pole up and anchor it. Do whichever is easier at the time then the rest are easy.

Second is the much commented side extension, securing and gaps. My tip is to lean the extension against the main tent (with or without poles inserted), and take the anchor cords to the other side first. Anchor them at the base of the pole on the other side at the floor steel ring. Should just cover a sequence of poles over the top. Can't remember if this is 3 or 4 but pull taught over as many as it covers. Then click the main extension part to the Vermont poles and turn these connections so you wrap the extension canvas around the main poles. You then only have the gap between the main pole and the tent which is small enough even on windy days. Then put the extension up. If you can, erect the whole thing with the prevailing wind (if there is one), onto the door of the extension then the wind goes over the top. The other way it can get under the overcover part.

Happy camping.

First 'quality' tent purchase - managed 2 nights in a cheap one with no sewn in ground sheet - this is like a palace compared!Loads of room for family of 5 - pretty quick to erect (watched the video on youtube - hubby even managed it single-handedly!)and to pack away - although we have to make our kids roll down the folded tent in order to get it back in the bag!Love the practicality of the 'wet' area which we use for cooking on wet days - keeps it away from the living area. We bought the carpet and footprint which are well worth the money.Love the tent, just a few minor issues - struggle to get the front area fully pegged down - always seem to have flappy bits of material!and the sloping front is a pain in the wet as when the door is unzipped all the water drips in. Have looked at purchasing Montana front extension as apparently it fits on the front of this and would prevent the sloping front problem - only thing is, it is already considered a large tent for most sites and not sure if I really want to make it any bigger!

Love the size and layout of this tent as it suits our family just right. There are some features that could be improved to make it even better, these include providing a storage bag that allows you to ' easily ' put the tent away after use and some lighter tent poles - we would gladly pay extra for both these things as you can almost break your back humping it from your vehicle or trailer to pitch.

It's well worth purchasing the side porch extension as this provides a super spot for cooking etc and keeps the weather away from the entrance, another worthwhile purchase is the carpet which gives a homely touch inside.

I purchased this tent 2nd hand, and I agree with other reviewers this tent is fabulous. Its large, and big enough for my family and needs. It took me and my partner 55 mins to pitch it. I used it for the first time for 10 days and was amazed with it, as before I had a 5 berth caravan and the truth of it the Vermont has more space than the caravan. I too came away with a BIG SMILE and cant wait to go away again at the end of July. The best tent I've owned.

A great tent, big, heavy and very well pegged. We braved Cornwall last “summer” and there were some other tents that didn’t last. Ours did!

However. We also have the side extension. A great idea but ours just doesn’t seem to fit. The walls clip on to the poles perfectly but I cannot get the roof to be taught. There is nowhere for the room lines to hook to on the far edge of the roof and they are not long enough to peg down! Thus we end up jury-rigging them to other lines. The result is that in almost any wind, the extension roof fabric flaps noisily in the breeze. We thought perhaps Yeomans had supplied the wrong one (eg for the non XL Vermont) but when they sent a replacement, it was exactly the same. This weekend (May bank holiday) I have taken some video and will forward to Outwell directly for their thoughts!

Other than that, the extension is a great feature for cooking under and well barley use the front porch as a result. Unless it’s tipping it down!

The ground sheet and carpets make for a very warm, cosy tent on cooler nights and the numerous windows keep it cool in the day too. A fab tent!

Brought this tent at a very good price from the tent factory and pitched it for the first time at Easter. My husband and I put up the middle pole first then the rest after we opened the doors to let some air in because when we tried to lift the other poles ,it had a vacuum effect. Only took us an hour to pitch (in very strong winds!) so was very pleased with that

The wardrobe was bigger then we remembered from a display and we fitted quite a lot in it. We cooked in the porch next to an open window (onions) but it didn't hold the smell which was good!

We love this tent and can't fault it apart from one thing which was the front of the porch which flaps a lot in the wind, but that really is only a little fault. The carpet is fantastic. Loads of space for our family of 5. Our 2yr old has just gone from a travel cot to an airbed, but if she hadn't I would have seriously considered using the walk-in wardrobe to put the cot in! it would have fit in there nicely!

We did a lot of research looking for the right tent for us and I can defiantly say that we have the perfect one!

I've just bought by internet because there's no more in France (outwell furnished haiti) and it was a great pity. I've received and we must test in Guerledan lake this week end. The trolley carrier bag is well done and poles seem to be higher quality than what we saw before in other family tents. I hope that no leakages appear cause it would be difficult to ship down but. It appears so nice. We are just new French campers and for nothing else we want to renonce to camping by now. Enjoy it

Manufacturer's Description

The Vermont XL has been discontinued, and replaced for 2012 with the Vermont XLP - there are 2 fundamental changes in the new XLP - the first is that the windows are now all tinted which will have the effect of minimising the glare from the sun but also of improving privacy. The second is that the front of the tent has been re-designed to incorporate a Panoramic Room - a large fully enclosed front porch area with a 4-zip multi-door opening which allows you to open up the entire front of the tent converting the room from an enclosed porch to a sun room .

The XLP has it's own listing on this site.
