We are very happy with this tent and have recommended it to others. We upgraded from a basic family tent set and we are so glad we did. We bought the footprint and the carpet and this makes for a very comfy feel under foot. The living area is a good size and the windows let in plenty of light.

Once you get used to pitching it, it's relatively straightforward with two adults. It has a sturdy feel to it once erected. The tent has withstood some absolutely dreadful weather - torrential rain and high winds for 24 hours in Anglesey, with no leaks. It is reasonably heavy and takes up quite a bit of space in the car, but then I guess that's the trade off for the generous proportions of the tent.

We only have a maximum of two people in each of the bedroom pods, and the space feels comfortable. We can comfortably fit a cupboard, folding table and four chairs and inflatable sofa in the living area. The hanging pockets are useful. We have experienced a little bit of condensation, but in fairness we have forgotten on occasion to open all of the vents.

Two minor criticisms, one of which has been raised in a few other reviews. The outer door only velcroes at the bottom and doesn't zip, therefore in windy weather it flaps around a bit. Also, it would be really useful to have poles to hold up the outer door, rather than having to roll it up every time you want it open. When it has stopped raining, the outer door is still wet and therefore you don't want to roll it up, but you often need air in the tent.

In summary, we are very pleased with this tent. We are considering buying either the side or front extension, but decided to wait a while to see what the reviews are like, particularly for the front extension which only came out this year.

Got a great deal on my Oakland XL as a display model from a Cotswold tent event. Yet to use it for real but took the time to see how it was to set up in the garden. Took me about 45 minutes on my own, certainly having the footprint helped. Since I've put it up it seems to have rained most days so it is still in the garden but there are no signs of leaks. It's been providing great entertainment for my daughter.

As others have commented the pegs supplied aren't great so I will be investing in news ones of various varieties including Delta's in the near future. Would also agree that the doors aren't great for access when it is raining but the addition of a side or front extension will resolve this.

Looking forward to using for real in the near future.

We (2 women) purchased this tent without doing any research. The men at the shop put it in car & we never realised the weight of it til we had to take it out, we should have taken it back but we didn't (our mistake). We watched the video on youtube before we headed off to campsite. It was very hard to erect as we are only 5.3', it took us about 45 mins in total & by the end where very hot & sweaty. The tent never moved in winds & no leaks. The only downside of this tent is when doors are open the rain drips into the tent & the door doesnt zip across the bottom. Overall a very strong sturdy tent. But we have only used it twice because it's just far 2 heavy & are now selling it, we will be researching are next one thoroughly before purchasing. Also does any tent fit back into it's bag????

I absolutely love this tent, I've reviewed it before but only after one trip. Me and my partner have used this tent quite a few times now and have finally worked out the best way to put it up. First off, don't follow the video off youtube, found a much easier way to get the tent set up. We use a ground sheet, invaluable as you can position you tent before you even start. Once happy with where you want it put the poles together and spread the tent out. Peg the tent at the back (all of the back points) and peg the two front corners. Start with the metal poles, insert the curves and then the legs which need to be pointed towards the back of the tent. With a person on each side, lift the poles upright and insert the metal pegs into the holes. This is the perfect moment to align the tent evenly on the poles as you can pull it easily. Next, insert the blue pole and the red pole to shape the tent, clipping the tent to the poles. Starting from the back, align each tent side going from pole to pole and pegging once happy. Finish with pegging the front and tighten the tension straps. Finish by pegging out the guy ropes. It really is a brilliant tent and the carpet and the side extension or front extension are a must ( both if you have the money and a big car).

We love this tent! We've just started camping again after 25 years so we were a bit rusty when it came to pitching the tent but even so it wasn't too difficult

There's only the two of us so the living area is more than adequate for us and we tend to sleep in the larger pod and use the other pod for storage and as a dressing room etc

There are two aluminium poles as well as the fibreglass poles which help with the sturdiness of the outfit. We have had heavy rain but there were no leaks or anything so we remained warm and cosy. The carpet is a must because it makes it feel much more warm and homely

We love the huge panoramic windows which bring the outdoors straight to your door and create such light in the living area it's fab! If it's draughty outside we like the fact that you can roll the front door up and sit just inside out of the wind but still feel as though you're sitting outside

We would prefer the doors to zip around the bottom and not just have velcro but when the flyscreens are zipped this means that they are sealed anyway to stop any bugs getting in

All in all we love this tent and we're very pleased that we chose it. Today we have taken delivery of the side extension and can't wait to try it out next weekend

We have just purchased an Oakland XL as a 'downsize' to the Nebraska XXL we previously owned. With 2 teenages that no longer feel it is 'cool' to come camping with Mum and Dad, we are down to a family of 3 (we also have a 7 year old) and felt the Nebraska was too big for our needs now.

The tent was really easy to pitch, we had it up in no time without practice, and the sturdy pegs that come as standard are great.

The living area was adequate for our needs. I had room for our kitchen unit, table, chairs and other belongings, with room to move around. The sleeping quarters are roomy. The larger pod comfortably sleeps 2 adults with 2 children in the smaller pod. We liked the fact that we could zip down the dividing wall so our youngest wasn't asleep in a pod alone.

The large windows are great, allowing you as much privacy as you should wish with adjustable 'curtains'. I feel that the large door at the front of the tent would benefit from a zip fastening all around the seam rather than just a velcro fastening at the bottom. During windy weather this tended to flap around a lot.

I was a little wary of returning to a tent with bendy poles after having bad experiences with these with a previous tent. However during a weekend in Derbyshire we had severe winds and torrential rain for a whole night and the tent coped brilliantly. No breakages or leaks, very impressive!

This tent will last us for many happy camps!

We bought this tent to use for longer than 2 night stays, although It is not so hard to erect ( you really do need two people though), it does take up some room in the car. Build quality is excellent, with a clear attention to detail and a great design. It will stand most weathers and keep you warm and dry. As the outer doors do not have zips around the bottom, the fly screens need to be closed to stop the door bottoms flapping in windy conditions. We also bought the side extension , but it doesn't really seem to be made for the job - the fit along the sides of the main tent is not good, and it doesn't follow any of the external frame seams, so looks rather 'Heath- Robinsonish' close up.

As newcomers to camping (in our early fifties) we really didn't know what style or make of tent we wanted to purchase, then a Go Outdoors leaflet came through the door with a '£100 Off' voucher inside for the new Outwell Oakland XL. We popped along to our nearest store just to have a look, never thinking that we would actually buy this particular tent, but the minute we saw it, we were hooked. Go Outdoors was selling this tent at £350 excluding the voucher, so getting this quality of tent for £250 was fantastic. As we got such a bargain, we also purchased the footprint and the carpet and we are so glad we did.

The Oakland XL is classed as a five man tent and you can sleep five in it and there is enough living space for five, but we would call it a roomy four and if like us, there are only two of you, then the space this tent provides is luxury. Pitching the tent was no problem. We watched the 2 guys on the Outwell video and apart from a little tweaking here and there, it really was that simple! We managed to do it in 40 minutes!

There are panoramic windows right round the living quarter which makes it so bright and airy, a real bonus on a wet rainy day. There are plenty of air vents and both the side entry door and the centre panoramic window at the front of the tent can open fully which will allow the air to circulate on a warm day and both have zipped mesh doors to keep out flies, midges, etc. The curtains on the windows roll from the bottom up and can be fastened half way, which gives you a little extra privacy but still allows you to see out.

We can also vouch for the waterproofing of this tent. We spent Easter Friday in the highlands of Scotland where the heavens opened up about eleven that evening and torrential rain prevailed all through the night. We awoke in the morning as dry as a bone and hardly a drop of condensation to be seen.

We have seen this tent sell in some stores for £450.00 and even at that price, in our opinion. This tent is worth every penny.

This is our first tent and our introduction to camping. We went to Go Outdoors in the sales in September last year and were advised that this tent was very easy to assemble, spacious, and well built. As novices we should have no problems with it.

I read a few reviews online before discovering this site and most said the same thing. We bought the Side Extension, footprint, and carpet at the same time as they were part of an offer. We would not be without the carpet having tried it!

Bearing in mind neither myself or girlfriend had pitched a tent of this type or size before we had a trial run in the garden. It took us about an hour and a half to carefully unpack, watch the videos, assemble the tent, and pack it away again.

We have just returned from our first trip in it and are happy to award it 10 out of 10. We stayed in a very windy spot near Scarborough and the tent stood up brilliantly against the wind. Many of the tunnel tents were struggling whereas ours had no issues at all.

We were so impressed with how light and spacious it feels and the build quality is excellent. We had two adults, a 3 year old, a dog, and lots of 'stuff' and there was still plenty of room for when we had a further two adults and 2 dogs to visit.

Like other reviewers of this tent, we found the same niggle with getting the tent centred on its poles - but now we know about it, it is not an issue for us.

I haven't the experience with camping that many on this site have, however if you are after a well made spacious tent, look no further.

Overall, fantastic. And well worth the money.

We got this tent after a very windy weekend in Anglesey in a Quechua 2 second pop up almost destroyed our new found love of camping, as there is only myself my hubby and 7year old we decided that a large living space was essential and after seeing the Oakland XL at go outdoors Stockport decided it was the one for us. We only have used it once in 2010 at the end of the season and enjoyed it thoroughly, it was difficult for us novices to pitch but sure that its down to ourselves and not the tent design.

The living space is huge and all the windows really enhance this. I agree with the little niggles that others have such as the top of the tent where the pole thread through not being big enough so it can catch on the side poles, and being only 5ft and my hubby 5ft4 we cant reach to put it right lol. The side door does need velcro at the bottom too and will be doing that ourselves. But these are little niggles that can be addressed and I am sure other tents have their own problems. It lightly rained on the second day of our weekend but this didnt effect the tent, no leaks etc.

No issues with the front pole as is on here, hopefully it was a faulty batch. Will be getting the carpets and side extension for this year to add even more luxury and am very tempted by the new front extension that Outwell have brought out for this tent in the 2011 catalogue.

Would recommend this tent to anyone that enjoys the luxury of a large living area with huge windows and Outwells reliability.
