Firstly, the model I have is the 2010 version with the stripy interior and not a 2009.

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said, absolutely superb piece of kit. Pitched it for the first time in the back garden this weekend and shortly after experienced some of the heaviest rain I have seen for years. No problem for the big Outwell, not a drop was seen from any of the seams.

I understand the frustration of some with the ingress of rain on opening a door (Outwell should take a look at the mini porch design on the Coleman Galileo XL (aka Weathermaster)). I too found this annoying but just chose to use the front porch entrance keeping the main living area bone dry. Easy.

I also use the footprint, carpet and windscreen and can equally recommend these too.

Throughout, this tent is complete quality. The stitching is beautiful, the choice of materials is spot on and the space is really well thought out. Me and the missus used to have to sleep in separate bedrooms as our substantial folding camp beds were not manufacured to sit side by side in a comvensionaly proportioned bedroom. Not so in the Vermont. By unzipping the removable wall, positioned between bedrooms one and two, we now have a massive single room with easily enough space for both beds and an additional deck chair to place our clothes etc.

Only negative has to be the price. I paid £649 for the tent, £70 for the carpet, £35 for the footprint and £39 for the windscreen. This is a lot but I do intend to use this stuff a lot over the next few years.

Highly recommended.

I have had this tent for the season, after buying it from outdoor world (new) but last years stock for £540 ish in about February,

We have been away three times this year ( 10 nights in total) and have to say the more we use it the more we like the tent,

The bedrooms are 2,3,2 but you can not get a double and a single air bed in the three resulting in all three bedrooms being used for a family of 4+1 friend, small issue I must say.

Also not happy with the tanked ground sheet, I think its a poor finish to the tent and can be improved on for very little cost.

But every thing else is really good, and that's why I have ratted it 9/10

You do have to watch the wardrobe pole being left in the tent as we have done the same bank-holiday weekend and as a result the tent is in the repair shop as we speak having a new panel sown in.

P.S got it in the bag pretty well.

Just purchased this tent from Yeomans (found a nice helpful young man who had extensive knowledge of Outwell tents to help us out) after visiting their camping display @ Evesham. We could not decide between the Ohio XL (fantastic tent but we felt it didn't offer the same spec as the Vermont), the Florida (loved the full length windows in the main living area but let down by the bedroom configuration) and finally the Vermont L (bedroom setup is 4+2 and we needed 3 bedrooms as boys wanted a room each) so the Vermont XL it was.

Unable to find a campsite with availability this bank holiday weekend so we pitched tent in the school playing field for a dummy run - took 45 minutes from us unpacking the tent to hammering in the final tent peg - didn't read instructions (if you can call them that) just watched the video on Youtube - took longer to get the tent down and back in the bag (still haven't managed it! will need some advice I think). We are really looking forward to trying this tent out properly next year and we write a full review - upgraded from a Gelert Quebec 8+4 as we needed LOTS of space for all our camping equipment, kids toys, dog (!) etc. Although really pleased so far with this purchase we have marked it 9/10 due to lack of instructions. Overall a luxury tent that ticked all our boxes (and more!)

We are a family of 5, with 3 kids (all girls ages 7, 4.5 and 2yrs).

We have just had our first outing in the new tent (well actually it was preloved but only used for 3 nights). We went to Derbyshire with three other families and the only downside to owning ths tent that as we had the biggest tent all 9 kids ended up playing in it!

After initial problems trying to erect the tent having no instructions and only seen the Yeomans YouTube video once we managed it after just over an hour. Had more problems fitting it back in the bag when we realised we had not removed the wardrobe rail!

Had a fantastic weekend and can't wait to use it again, it was great to go camping again after so long.

We also bought the kids room off ebay which the kids loved and they slept in until 9:30am on the second morning as it keeps their bedroom section quite dark.

This is our, (myself, OH, 14yo daughter and 11yo son) first ever tent and we decided after a great deal of looking, reading, umming and arrring to spend more money than we originally planned to try and make the whole camping experience as pleasurable as possible. I must say that I am glad that we did. We bought the tent and carpet (were going to get the footprint but out of stock so got a 8m x 5m tarp from B+Q instead) from Yeomans who provided very good service .

We have just returned from our 2nd outing and our first WET outing in the Vermont and I am pleased to say that it magaged to keep us all bone dry.

Firstly the good points, the tent is very spacious especially as there are only 4 of us. It is very well designed on the whole with the 3 separate areas of bedrooms, living area and front area/porch. Numerous otions for windows/screens/doorways being fully open, flyscreened, or obscured. The front porch opens fully to provide a sheltered outdoor area. Various options for bedrooms from 1 very large open unit would sleep 6 comfortably or 7 at a squeeze to a 2/3/2 (2/2/2 would be more comfortable) separated arrangement. The separate wardrobe unit with hanging rail is v. Handy for storage. The lighting cable tidy is also a nice touch. Appears to be very well made.

The not so good bits, its BIG/heavy in the bags. Although its fairly straight forward to erect with 2 people I would think it would be quite a job in strong wind. If you open the front door when its raining the rain comes straight in to the tent as the front wall slopes inwards at the top. The instructions with the tent are virtually useless.

Overall I would highly recommend this tent to anyone that wants a large, stable, dry place to enjoy their camping trips in (providing you have somewhere to store/transport it.

Not much to add to all the other reviews - clearly a popular tent. I've just put it up to give it a quick clean before our next trip and reminded myself how much I love it! The only reason it got 9 vs 10 is that when it rains, due to the sloping front, you get soaked going in and out and the water drips onto the bathtub groundsheet. Outwell ought to make a canopy for the front just as a rainshield for the door. They make a canopy for the side but we don't like to use the side doors, plus it takes you over the max pitch width. It's a great size for us, gives us a bedroom for me and OH and the kids a room each also. A big benefit is that it fits perfectly onto C&CC pitches (without the canopy). I can even pitch it on my own (5'9' girly - not easy, but do able)

I can only echo what the other reviewers have said - this is a fabulous tent! The layout is spacious and well thought out, there are lots of practical details like cable entry, fly screens, light cable tidy etc, and the build quality is very good.

When we first pitched it in the garden I couldn't believe the space inside, but we needed it with five of us and a labrador! It has been much admired when it's been out and about, even caravan owners have been impressed (and they like their mod cons). I decided not to cook in the front porch, I didn't want grease and smells on my lovely tent, but the space is fantastic for storage, eating or relaxing in during the day. We switch to the middle section once the kids have gone to bed, it's cost with the curtains closed and the carpet underfoot.

There's no denying that this is cumbersome beast. You'll need a good amount of space in your car for the tent and pole bags, the same space to store it at home, and a couple of fit people to pitch it; but I am always amazed that such a huge amount of material can be folded up so neatly. I walked around a tent exhibition a couple of weeks ago, looking at all the fancy new outwells, the Maryland, Arkansas etc. I came away with a big smile on my face - I still loved my Vermont the best of all, I had made the right choice.

We're on tent no. 2 of these as no. 1 leaked a couple of weekends ago (admittedly in torrential rain!). Yeomans were fantastic though, arranging a replacement ASAP and assuring us that the comments above of everyone having no issues is more the norm.

We bought as a big tent, for the 2 of us + 2 kids, to camp for weeks at a time in UK weather. In that regard it's close to perfect, with a porch large enough to cook and eat in, and a massive _dry_ living area which we have the carpet for. 3 bedrooms + the wardrobe give us lots of places to 'dump' things and mean we have somewhere to tidy the kids toys away at night!

Additionally, we us C&CC sites alot, and this fits nicely on a standard pitch.

Downsides? Its big. :) There's many different ways to put it up (none of which are fun in the wind). The porch flaps around no matter how you peg it (to the point of pulling up normal steel pegs), but to be honest, these are quibbles!

'New' tent has been up in the garden now for a week and so far no leaks, so fingers X'sd we had a duff 1st one. :)

We have just returned from a week away in the xl that we bought in the jan sale online, along with the footprint, carpet and side extension. Although it was quite an investment, we are certain we have made the best choice of all the tents available at the moment.

As a previous reviewer stated, the instructions are pretty poor, as, unless you are Geoff Capes, putting ALL the poles in and then trying to erect them is a rather tall order for 2 of us under 5ft 6'! We changed tack and put only the section we were erecting in each time and didn't have any problems at all.

The lesson we learnt also was laying the extension guys over the top BEFORE erecting the last 2 sections (we had had a dry run in the garden)or you find it VERY hard to throw them over afterwards!

The carpet is a dream, I have long strips of velcro holding in place along the sides, and it stayed put all week. We left it inside the tent when we packed up and to our delight it rolled up perfectly well with the tent and all fitted neatly into the bag.RESULT!

The bathtub groundsheet was ok, maybe I should have ensured the porch skirts were pegged tighter so it didn't 'flap' so much, but generally, it 'did as it said on the tin' and kept all the kitchen equipment, dining area and larders high and dry.

The windows, curtains, fly nets are great, a mutitude of combinations to be had for whatever weather you have.Just the curtains up in the rain giving you protection and ALL the daylight, just the fly nets to allow the air to flow through or all of them wrapped up to ''let it all out''!

The extension is a must, I used to HATE getting wet right outside the door after unzipping in our previous tent, so, to have this monster of a porch was perfection. We used that side as the main entrance, had acres of space to sit and eat, and , much to my husbands disgust, got some lanterns all along the outer rim for 'enchanted evenings' haha!

The bedroom sections are fantastic, very roomy and lots of extra pockets for stray teddies, books etc. The wardrobe room was a great addition, along with a small larder to store folded items and a laundry 'bin', it kept all the messy stuff tucked away neat & tidy.Bliss!

We have to say, if you buy this tent and have problems then you would be the most unlucky of people. This tent is worth every penny we have spent and we hope to keep this one now till we are old(er) and grey(er)!

We have held back on leaving a review for this tent until we had used it a few times and got a real feel for it.

After doing lots of research on the internet and reading the tent reviews on this website we decided to spend a little more money than originally planned and went for the Vermont XL.

I have to say that we don't regret one penny of that spend.

Firstly, and the biggest draw back are the instructions which, frankly, are rubbish. We watched a video on youTube a few times which shows one method of erecting the tent(search for Vermont XL on youTube) and can get the tent with everything including beds, kitchen, table, chairs, and windbreaker up and running in 1 hour.

The tent has plenty of room for a family of four and all the extras, ie: tables, chairs, dog beds, kitchens, etc, etc. The bedrooms are plenty big enough and cosy at the same time. There are storage pockets either side of the middle bedroom door which come in very handy for things like clean pants, socks, mobile phones, books, whatever you like really.

We got a good deal from Towsure for the Tent, Footprint and Carpet. Which ever tent you decide on, go for the Footprint and Carpet as well. The footprint saves the sewn in ground sheet from dirt/mud etc so there is no need to get the tent back out on your arrival home to clean it. The Carpet just makes the whole experience of walking in socks or bare footed so much more pleasurable and lends an air of comfort to the whole living space.

The front lift up canopy/porch area is a nice touch with lots of room underneath for a table and chairs and a cooking area. This is the place to sit and watch the world go by whilst sipping a cold beer or a good old pot 'o' tea.

Moving into the tent, the next divider/doorway like all the doors and windows in the tent has a mosquito net. This door has a good number of options for zipping up, as mentioned in an earlier review.(not quoted)the doorway can be zipped from the bottom - up to create a barrier for your dog at whatever height you like. This can also be fully opened/closed or opened from the side to create a standard door.

The main living area has a separate inner tent which is marketed as a wardrobe with a removable hanging rain. We use this very handy place for our Kampa-Karzy(toilet) which we only use at night to save the kids going out in the dark.

Overall I would give this tent a very honest 9/10 with the one mark deducted for the very poor instructions.

Manufacturer's Description

The Vermont XL has been discontinued, and replaced for 2012 with the Vermont XLP - there are 2 fundamental changes in the new XLP - the first is that the windows are now all tinted which will have the effect of minimising the glare from the sun but also of improving privacy. The second is that the front of the tent has been re-designed to incorporate a Panoramic Room - a large fully enclosed front porch area with a 4-zip multi-door opening which allows you to open up the entire front of the tent converting the room from an enclosed porch to a sun room .

The XLP has it's own listing on this site.
