Just back from our first camping trip with this tent. The tent is amazing - loads of space for everything really. We went whole hog and bought the footprint and carpet which helped protect the base sheet. Carpet was brill. Easy to put up. More difficult to put in the bag though - we tried a few times to get it packed away.
One major difficulty we had is knowing what to do with the front porch groundsheet. It was windy and the whole thing kept lifting up about 30' or more off the grass. Don't know how you are supposed to fit this groundsheet in with the tent or peg it down. There is a lack of instructions for this part of the tent and will have to figure this out before our next trip in 2 weeks time.

Used our new Vermont XL this May Bank Holiday (2009) and found it to be as good as all the other reviews. We had traded it in for our Outwell Georgia XL that we had last year. We found it to be so much easier to put up - although the poles are a lot heavier and you definitely need two people to put it up. The inside was a lot roomier than I had expected (as the Georgia is absolutely huge). I've uploaded my pictures and as you can see there is still room inside even with chairs and the table and benches in there.
Another feature I liked is that you can open the side doors (with mesh) to allow cool air to come in when sun comes out.
The porch is brilliant and very roomy - enough room to put your camp kitchen in and even 2 chairs and still leaves loads of space to store all the kids toys and shoes.
We did try putting the porch up using the porch-poles. Found this a bit awkward as you have to fix on the guy-lines and take them off when you putting it away which is a bit time consuming. Didn't realise until we put it back (closed doors and pegged out guylines) that you can in fact roll up the whole of the front (instead of using poles) and I think I would probably prefer to do that next time.
Only difficulty the whole time was trying to get the air out of it when packing it away. Only just got it back into it's bag and then couldn't zip the bag.

Tent much better than I could have expected, we unzipped the partitions and had one big family room with three doubles and a single, great for keeping an eye on infants etc. We used the cupboard as a store / toilet and found it great for keeping items out of the way of the kids. The living space is HUGE - we bought the carpet and can say its definitely worth the money. Great to have a 'wet area' for cooking / eating and a dry area for playing with the kids / changing etc. No leaks at all after two wet days / nights. Great choice if you are worried about fitting onto standard pitches, so glad we bought this tent, cant see us ever buying another one!

The size and layout of this tent is just perfect and that its got a sewn in groundsheet. Lots of windows so nice and light too. The closed in porch is great and the zipped front between main living area and porch runs from top to bottom either side so is great if you have dogs like me cos you can zip both sides down to a preferred height and it acts like a fence stopping the dogs escaping & prob babies/toddlers! The built in wardrobe we used as a toilet tent for night times and still had room for coats & footwear. We purchased the carpet too which was lovely and well worth it.More than enough room for 2 adults, 2 teens and 4 dogs. But my main reason for leaving this review is the first time we used it, last Aug, was 2 weeks in the Gower on top of a cliff apparently in the worst weather for years, we went to bed and the campsite was full, must have been about 45 various tents, woke in the morning to find only 11 tents remaining as the rest had blown down, poles snapped etc during the night in the gale force winds & torrential rain! Of the 11 remaining tents 9 of them were Outwells! That holiday (from hell!) was the ultimate test for any tent and it passed with flying colours! Not even one leak!

Fantastic roomy tent! its like a 4 apartment house and the bonus of the childrens play room, that is a godsend, kept the kids amused for hours! trust outwell to think of everything, they deserve a medal!
This tent is really well thought out, making it so comfortable and versatile. We are only a family of four, but I really wanted a large roomy tent so we do not feel cramped and uncomfortable for a fortnight's holiday and this tent is the perfect answer!
Highly recommend this tent to anyone.

We bought this tent because it was the only one we could find that was big enough for us and our 7 kids under 11 + having room to live and play & a closed off, but closed in 'porch' for cooking/storage. With a toddler this was essential for keeping him away from the cooker etc. We LOVE the tent - it felt like a palace and invoked a few 'that's we need need' comments from passers-by! It stood up to a fair amount of rain and wind for us - although be Warned - we had a sag in our pitching (our fault) which left outer and inner in contact - meaning a river within one night. However, this ran down under us and the kids stayed dry! Once we sorted out the sag we were totally dry after that. Footprint and Carpet were both excellent investments and seriously added to the overall comfort and home-from-home feel. Stacks of space for all of us (although we only took 6 kids this time) to sleep. For the future we are thinking the bigger ones can have a 'throw-up' tent in the outer porch that can be put away each night (another reason for wanting a sealed in porch). We struggled to work out how the ground-sheet for the porch was supposed to fit (we didn't have written instructions) and somehow don't think we quite got it right, but everything stayed dry so that was the main thing :)
All-in-all a fabulous family tent that we plan to use for our holidays for many years to come :)

We bought this tent when we had outgrown our smaller one and were considering buying a caravan. We wanted a bit more space and also we wanted to spends a week or 2 camping at a time and needed something substantial.
The cost of caravans immediately stopped us from looking any further so we went BIG tent shopping. When we found this tent online we knew it would be perfect. Spare bedroom, wardrobe, separate living and cooking area.It all appealed.
We went to see one in a local camping shop and bought it on the spot. We added a fitted carpet to our set up this year.
I have to say its just great! It is really easy to put up (takes 2 adults about an hour and that includes all the pegging out) Getting it down again couldn't be simpler. (again less than an hour into the bag) If you follow the principle of folding the outside edges into the middle over and over then you can eventually roll it up in one go. The pack is smaller than you'd expect. The poles are super heavy though but a small price to pay for such a great tent.
We have camped in the rain and stayed dry, in the wind and stayed put and in the scorching heat and stayed cool (thanks to the squillions of windows and doors)
Its the best tent we have ever owned. We usually camp on sites without marked pitches so haven't had trouble yet with the size although I think its cleverly designed in one long box.
If you can't make up your mind let this reassure you. You won't be making a mistake with the Vermont XL. Outwell tents are so highly spec'ed and well worth every penny!

Our tent arrived this morning & as they give rain later my Husband & I thought that we would set it up there and then in our garden.
We pegged down the groundsheet, then laid the tent on it with the poles at each side ready to go. (as they do in the videos) We timed ourselves from this point onwards and bearing in mind we had our 2 children ages 7 & 3 to 'help' (hinder) us too! lol
It took us 35 minutes without rushing which we thought was pretty good going!
We put the back top arch pole in first, then the legs to it and attched the pins (all whilst on the ground) we then pulled up the back arch & pegged the guy ropes down at the rear.
Then we did the same for the front arch & then did the middle arches.
This worked really well and whilst I attached the kids room, opened up the windows & started setting up inside my husband adjusted all the guy ropes while the children played in their new kids room.
All in all a very easy put up & the weather was sunny but with a slight wind (hence having to use the guy ropes to hold each end up as we were putting it up.
I shall take some pictures later and add them so you can see the set up. Our Kingsize matress is yet to be blown up but laid flat on the floor it looks as though it should fit nicely in the middle room. Plenty of room for the 2 children to share the kids room with both their blow up mattresses which gives us a spare end room or an extra large bedroom for us!

We purchased this tent a month ago a took it for its first outing the 1st weekend in July.
We had a practice run beforehand which did go smoother. Bur within 1/2 hour we were ready to set up the inside of the tent.
The tent is massive inside and as it was a lovely evening it seemed far to big. When we retired for the evening the carpet and footrpint retained alot of warmth in the tent and it was lovely. Four adults, chairs and table fitted comfortably.
It then rained continuously for the next two days.
With four adults and two children we were able to cook, eat and relax inside the tent without feeling cramped and the windows gave us alot of light into the tent.
We did notice a small leak in one of the seams but once it dried out we sprayed it and it was fine the rest of the time.
We went out for the day with the weather being so bad and on the way back drove through thunder and lightening. We were expecting the worst when we got back but the tent was fine, no leaks nothing. I was really impressed and cant wait to go away in it again.

Although we haven't yet used our tent we will be for 2 weeks from 16th August & I just wanted to write a review as to why we made this purchase.
We have been camping in our garden every year for the last 4 years. Each year buying a larger / better equipped tent than the previous year.
I have spent almost 2 weeks researching a spacious tent & our requirements were the following.
1) To stand up in the majority of it
2) At least 2 'bedrooms'
3) An area for the kitchen / table & chairs
4) Fairly Easy / Quick to put up & pack away
5) Room for plenty of storage
6) Windows that open
7) Space to use as a toilet area
8) A good / fair price
So far this tent meets all our requirements!
On reading other reviews, this 2008 tent seems to be better though out than the 2007 version in terms of the bedroom layout.
I also love the idea of the walk in wardrobe, what a luxury!
We've purchased the Carpet & Kids Room to go with it so we'll use the 2,3,2 as Kids Room, Our Room & Toilet (hopefully)
The middle living area we're hoping to use to relax / play in and the outer living area to cook & eat in. I like the idea of the bath-tub groundsheet to shake off the kids 'mess' or wash down and dry outside if necessary.
We purchased this yesterday for £399.14 which compared to what many others have paid seems a bargain. The Kids room was £38.29 & the carpet £42.47 (Total £479.90)plus £12.95 delivery on top.
As some have suggested we have purchased better quality pegs so hopefully all will be okay?!
We've watched the video on erecting the tent and as soon as it arrives we'll test it out in the garden for a week before we go to the campsite.
I'll write a more detailed review on our return but just to say a big thank you to everyone here who adds their reviews, it was very helpful in our research!

Manufacturer's Description
The Vermont XL has been discontinued, and replaced for 2012 with the Vermont XLP - there are 2 fundamental changes in the new XLP - the first is that the windows are now all tinted which will have the effect of minimising the glare from the sun but also of improving privacy. The second is that the front of the tent has been re-designed to incorporate a Panoramic Room - a large fully enclosed front porch area with a 4-zip multi-door opening which allows you to open up the entire front of the tent converting the room from an enclosed porch to a sun room .
The XLP has it's own listing on this site.
