I bought this tent because I take my three small children camping on my own and I wanted us all in one bedroom. The tent is really easy to put up, three poles and pegging out and the job is done. Had a but of trouble tensioning the window flaps at the front but with a bit of adjustment to the guy lines managed to get them reasonably tight. Stood up to lashings of driving rain and everything was bone dry inside. The bedroom has plenty of room for airbeds, small suitcase and we even had a collapsible wash basket in the corner. We had our cooker and shelves in the porch area which was not massive but certainly adequate for our needs. One night was a bit chilly and we had 4 adults all on deckchairs comfortably sat in the porch with the doors closed. I love this tent as it is just the job for 3/4/5 night stays for a family.

Initially this tent seemed very nice BUT.

On our second use of this tent we had a rather windy night. We have camped with several different tents before and know we had assembled the tent correctly, but it was completely unstable in it's design. The whole tent collapsed sideways in the wind putting so much pressure on the tent itself that the poles snapped in multiple places and the inner tent was ripped in several spots.

We had to dismantle it in quite a hurry and go home first thing in the morning, cutting our holiday short with all our stuff completely soaked.

This was not an extreme wind that the tent was in - there was at least a hundred other tents in the field of different sizes and makes. And they were all just fine.

Do not buy this tent unless you are sure there will be no wind at all while you are away.

I have just returned from a camping trip with my two grandchildren aged 12 and 6, I chose the Atakama 5 because the pitching time said 10 mins. Being a 54 year old grandmother and knowing I had to have a large enough tent for the grandchildren, and would probably have to pitch the tent myself, the Atakama was my choice. I found the tent easy to pitch, my grandchildren helped by steadying the opposite poles as the tent rose and helped with the pegging round, my 6 yr old grandson took great delight in using the mallet to hammer the pegs home. (I had purchased a large peg extractor so this wasn't a problem). I had also used 2 extra groundsheets under the tent before pitching and the tent was fully erected and pegged out in 25 minutes total time, which I thought was pretty impressive.

I thought the bedroom inner tent area was too large and the living space too small, so I adapted this by only using the top two toggles of the inner tent and tucking the bottom area under from the centre position and this worked really well giving us an extra 2 ft of living room space and enough room for our table and chairs (suitcase type with seats attached). Doing this meant that the attached groundsheet was going to be short over the living area but this didn't matter as I had already pegged out 2 large groundsheets under this area before pitching the tent. Also I thought even if we had used the other 2ft of bedroom space this tent would not have been big enough for 5 people. I would recommend 4 maximum, especially if you use airbeds which take up more ground space. For 3 of us this was a great sized tent.

We didn't use the side door as I had my tent cupboard / tidy placed at the opposite side in front of the side door, so we just used the front porch area. I staked out a 'garden' area with the use of 2 sets of wind breaks either side of the porch (the low ones, so not to block us in) and I used this area for the two ring cooking stove which is on legs, and an extra camping table for meal preperation. I felt that we could have done with a fly sheet over this area as when it rained I had to cover the kitchen/cooking area over as there was not enough room in the living space of the tent.

Also the bedroom inner tent area had enough height to stand, but the living area space was not high enough and I had to bend my head in this area and also under the front porch area, and I am only 5ft 4in tall so another couple of inches would have been perfect.

All in all with a couple of adaptations this made a great tent, very easy for 1 person to erect, but I will be buying an annex/flysheet to cover the front cooking area before my next trip.

As a novice camper this tent was pretty easy and straightforward to put up but I have to agree with the other review the ring and pin is a very tight fit.

We bought it because we wanted extra height and it's so nice to get dressed standing up without hunching over like in other tents. We stored all our food, gas burners, fold up chairs etc in the front porch and it didn't feel cramped at all a really good space.

Overall a great tent with a lovely spacious feel, 2 more weeks and i'll be trying it out again, can't wait.

This was really quick to put up. I agree some of the pole sleeves are tight but gently does it best. Standing room is important for us as our previous expeditions left us seized up! Plenty of space in the front for cooking and storage. Can't wait to get away again.

I have a large family who have never been camping. About five weeks ago we went looking at camping gear and purchased this tent. The reason we chose this tent was price. As beginners I didn't want to pay out alot of money on something that may not be used again. On Saturday we decided to go camping to barmouth. On arrival we were a bit nervous as not even testing the tent or putting one up before. My 14 year old daughter erected it with her dad while me and 3 kids went to loo. When we came back it was up, so easy it took about twenty minutes for this to go up. Loads of room for sleeping and managed to store clothes and food comfortably at front of the tent. We had brilliant weekend and cant wait to go away next week with this great tent. I think I could get hooked.

We used one for the first time this year we put it up in half an hour no problems, we didn't even practice putting it up before we went away.

It rained very heavy all day and night and no leaks , very pleased with it.

Me and my partner claude had no trouble erecting the base camp. We believed the tent to go up very easy with a bit of elbow grease and camping knowledge

Once the tent was erect me and claude found enough space within it, wasn't like the usual tight squeeze to get in. The entrance was nice and big so I fitted in very well and didn't have to get in any awkward positions to cross the threshold

We found the ropes really useful as with our old tent we had black guylines so me and claude were always falling on top of each other with this tent at least we can wait until were inside ;)

Overall this tent is perfect for a couple or three as we found out, one night on our travels. I would definitely recommend this tent to anyone that wants a stable roof over their heads yet there is enough room to play with ;)

For the price, £59,it would have been 10 out of 10. The problems come with design and putting it up.

Problem 1. The pole sleeves are too tight.Feeding the poles, even though they are shock loaded is quite a struggle, the eyelets for some of the guys get in the way when trying to push the pole through.

Problem 2. The ring and pin system is far too tensioned. It took 2 of us over 10 minutes a pole to eventually get them in place, and that was after making an adaptation. The instruction diagram that comes with the tent shows the ring and pin attached to an adjustable strap which could easily have been tensioned and tightened once the pin was in place. However, what the tent actually comes with is a fixed loop to which are attached 2 rings and a pin. There is no play in this arrangement whatsoever.

In order to give slightly more play,we removed the ring with the pin attached and fixed it to the other ring which was attached to the fixed loop. This gave us an extra 1',which took off some of the pressure in getting the pin into the end of the pole.Is this a production error which is why the tents are being sold at such a low price?

Problem 3.Although getting the main part of the tent above the sleeping area tensioned and well balanced was not a problem, getting the front part of the tent above the living area pulled tight was a different matter. No matter how many times the front pole and guys were adjusted,we could never get the front outer tensioned as well as the rear of the tent.

Problem 4.Not so much a problem, more a design niggle. The living area could do with gaining an extra 1 foot at the expense of the sleeping area.We were only 2 adults and a dog but, even so it is not spacious.I do'nt know how 5 could use this front area in comfort.

I know this sounds like a big moan, but if you only want the tent for weekends or short breaks and can sort out any of the problems, particularly the ring and pin system, its actually not a bad tent.

It stood up to 2 wet nights well enough, its light and small enough to pack into the car, although the flimsy bag ripped putting it away.

For longer trips we will use our Vango Aspen, different class altogether,or for my solo camping the Wild Country Quasar.

The weekend just gone (Sat 4th July) I decided to test run putting the tent up which turned out into a massive sleepover with three of my sisters children, my son and my wife. Because we are novices it took us well over an hour to get the tent erected but I was very impressed with the amount of space inside. In the bedroom part my two nieces slept in one side, my son and nephew slept in the other side of the bedroom and me and my wife slept in the porch. Even passed the rain test at 5 in the morning.

We also noticed one of the side openings was slightly leaking but it was down to the fact that we had not put the porch side up right, their was a bit of slack and a puddle of water formed but it was a good learning curve for when we do it for real in the next couple of weeks. Also managed to get it all folded away in the little bag which I thought would never happen

Manufacturer's Description

With large living /storage and sleeping areas, the Atakama 5 is ideal for families having a long weekend away, or any groups of campers who may need space to store gear and spread around.

It is a double skin tent, with the outer pitched first to keep things simple, and a breathable inner to keep you comfortable.

The outer flysheet is 190T PU coated polyester with taped seams and a hydrostatic head of 3000, meaning it's rugged enough to handle scrapes and waterproof enough to take the heaviest downpours.

For warmer conditions, the breathable inner and large side and front doors will make sure the inside is ventilated enough so you and your kit are not overheating. The front door can be extended out as a canopy using the steel porch poles, offering shelter from sun or showers.

The porch/living area has a pre-attached groundsheet, making it easy for you to keep a clear, clean space for furniture, bikes etc., and keeping the bedroom area draught-free.

For extra stability, the tent has pre-attached double guylines, so it will easily withstand any strong gusts of wind. The guylines themselves are bright and reflective, to help you to find the tent in the dark, and to stop other campers from tripping over them if you're in a busy campsite.

Other useful features include slick pole sleeves to aid pitching, fire-retardant fabrics, and large windows to allow maximum light in if you need it.

A simple, yet versatile tent for easy group camping.
