By: OLDM8 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2001 Rating:
Great heavy weight camping. Spacious tent for 2 to 6 people. Well ventilated tent through top pockets means no condensation. This 323gm cotton tent doesn't rustle in the wind either, place bell end into the wind and it just sits there steady. Cotton is fireproofed so no worry about the occasional stray spark from the camp fire or BBQ. It has kept us dry in thunderstorms. It has a heavy duty zipped in groundsheet, the zip is high robust quality. It is very easy to remove, if you don't need to use it or you want to tie up the side-walls on a hot day for ventilation. The stitching of the seams is excellent and there are no baggy panels. It is provided with large wooden pegs and a giant mallet. I take some heavy duty steel pegs as well in case of stony or very hard ground. The main pole and the entrance A-frame pole are aluminium but there is timber main pole option. There is also a tent inner available, which may be invaluable in mosquito country. I can erect the tent on my own in under half an hour I am 60 years old. Minor grumbles are toggles on side air vents are too small especially with wet or cold fingers. The rings that attach the guy ropes to the tent tapes are poor, I have replaced them with small inexpensive steel rings. The A-frame at the entrance can be a chore to adjust on uneven or sloping ground, but with a bit of practice is OK. Other than that I love this tent, the design has been well tested since the Crimean War in 1855 and BCT have been in business for over 100 years. There are cheaper companies out there but they all compromise on quality.
I have spent around 1500 nights under canvass in dozens of different tents and this is one of my favourites.
