4 Reviews of the 4m Standard

When we decided that our old canvas Raclette 'house' tent really was no good for weekend camping as it took so long to put up, we considered a bell tent. We much prefer canvas to nylon as is so much more hard-wearing and you can tell it will last for years and years.

My husband was very keen but before we got it I had reservations as I was worried about the mess factor, there being only one space as opposed to separate bedrooms. I was persuaded and I must say it has been a great buy.

We have three children age 10, 8 and 6. We thought about a 5m one but they are very heavy and we thought it looked a bit enormous. The five of us lying down take up half the floor space, all lying next to each other. The kids love the cosyness and security of this and as they sleep very well, it's fine with us too.

The mess isn't a problem - as long as the clothes are chucked back in their bags and you sweep up once in a while. It makes a lovely hang-out with other children as it is so open a space and also so robust - I never worry about anyone damaging it.

It is very quick to put up. I can do it by myself and with two of us it takes 20 mins. We have had long and short holidays in South of France heat and English rain. No problems.

If you had to pack this tent away very wet, it would be worse than a nylon tent and would take longer to dry out - this is the main down side of bell tents, plus the fact that they take up a lot of room in the car.

For longer holidays in Britain, we take a day tent for cooking and eating in as this is not practical in a bell tent.

I have owned my bell tent for 2 years and used extensively. The design and quality of manufacture is of a very high standard. Very cool in the sun with all of the venting connotations and warm especially with inner tent.

Inner tent very high standard and useful for keeping out the drafts and insects as well as the cold, one thing I would say about the inner is it takes up half the tent so can make the 4m feel a bit small.

I have used in 30mph wind and rain and days of rain on end. No leaks and No problem with wind.

My advice is to get the heavy duty pegs for guy lines and get fully wetted out and dry once to stop drips.

I love my bell tent. It's roomy and easy to put up. I can do it in about 15 mins with 2 whining kids. The only reason I give 9 instead of 10 is coz you do have to be careful to tuck up the groundsheet or rain will seep in (not the tents fault but the setter-upper & the english weather but the fact it can happen makes it not 100% perfect!)

People do like to comment (positively) on it esp if it's the only bell tent in the campsite ; my favourite from a 4 year old on a hot day after rolling up the sides 'why is their tent floating' !

Well made .Value for money, easy to pitch. Had 2 - 2 week holidays and 4 long weekends. I am installing a wood burner for next year. It is now November and I hope to have a long weekend before the snow sets in, lol. Our last canvas tent lasted us approx 28 years ,I feel this belltent will be the same. It will need reproofing about every 3/4 years to keep it in tip top condition, you will not get condensation on the inside, the material is heavy cotton unbleached, it looks cool. We have old fashioned multi coloured blankets (20 yrs old) they sit on the floor (we dragged them out of the loft) Our grandkids think it is great to go into nans Indian tent lol (must get some war paint to look the part lol).

Manufacturer's Description

4 metre diameter Bell Tent with separate groundsheet

Sides roll up on hot days to let the breeze through. This is the unique selling point of a Bell Tent. Just think - no more 'melting' at festivals!
Lightweight but strong (285 g/m²), high quality, unbleached, cotton canvas (the perfect balance between durability and portability)
Only weighs a total of 17kg (including tent, poles, pegs, bag and separate groundsheet)
All packs down into matching canvas bag with two shoulder straps, small enough to go on the back of a motorbike/Smart car (approx 90cmx30cmx30cm)
Fabulous unbleached colour - no bright white nightmares - creating an iconic silhouette, and giving a warm and gentle vibe inside. (Please note, colours may vary slightly from photographs, and from year to year.)
Material is treated to be water, UV and mould-resistant for up to 60 weeks of constant use. You can then re-proof the tent at a cost of around £20
An A-frame-covered entrance. Unlike some bell tents this has an A-frame entrance which creates a porch to stop the rain coming in. Tents without this feature can let the rain in and leak all the way up the entrance flap (ie. to the middle of the tent!)
Takes two people around eight minutes to erect...okay, it took us four goes to get it that fast!
Can be erected by one person in around 12 minutes
Waterproof groundsheet is octagonal, made to measure and is pegged down to stop it being blown about
The walls have an eight inch, colour-matched, rubber flap that tucks under the groundsheet to create a wind and rain-resistant seal
Beautifully made, using quality materials
4 x unzippable windows/air vents, complete with mosquito nets
Heavy-duty, zipped front door for fast access and a secure seal
Can be fitted with our specially designed Bell Tent Uk stove.
