4 Reviews of the Blacks Good Companion Major
By: Molly65 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2001 Rating:
Lovely tent, but for me only suitable for camping by car, or possibly split between 2 on a bike? Astonished to see it listed as 4 berth, have only used it with two people, or with 2 plus a child when I was small enough to fit behind the pole. Room to stand in centre. Need to pitch inner first is a disadvantage in rain. Just learned from this site that it can hang from A frame. I inherited it with centre pole and always used it that way.

Its all been said before in the reviews whether for a Minor, Standard or Major.Just the Major gives oodles of space for two, plenty for three and if under 6 foot; enough for four, lying front to back in the tent. With the extended flysheet it is just awesome.
Get one if you can.
Agusta as above , or below, depending on where this post fits is spot on.

Hi, We have a good companion standard with the extended fly sheet [ also have small flysheet purchased much later]. My parents bought it as ex display when we went to Austria in about 1967 and I still use it today. I've just bought new peg rubbers to stitch on as the last of the old ones fell off a couple of weeks ago! Still waterproof in spite of large tear I stitched up which is right over inner tent. I hope to find some pics to post so watch out.

The Good Companions Major was made by Black of Greenock, the big brother of the Blacks Minor and the Standard. This tent makes a great base camp shelter with plenty of room inside the inner tent for all the kit. Like the Minor and the Standard the inner tent can be pitched either first or last suspended below the ‘A’ frame poles. The advantage of the ‘A’ frame is there is no pole in the way of the accommodation area and leaves the door opening clear of obstructions. The flysheet is kept well away from the inner using the ‘A’ frame making sure in high winds it does not touch the inner allowing wet to get inside. An option offered by Blacks was an extended Fly sheet giving yet further room outside of the inner tent for extend storage of equipment. This range of tents, in my view, great with different option depending on what the user wanted; these tents should be remanufactured again as they would appeal to a wide range of people and groups.

Manufacturer's Description
This tent is one of a set of three, the Good Companions Minor, Standard and Major manufactured by Blacks of Greenock made in the 60’ &70’s. It has an ‘A’ pole and the inner and flysheet are made from Egyptian cotton, the tent can be put up with fly first or the inner first, best to put the fly up first due to the height of the tent; the fly without the inner makes a good sun shelter on sunny day in the garden.
