3 Reviews of the Blacks Octane 1

I have the later model of this tent. Not much difference other than it's bright green. Initially I was really pleased with the tent. It fits perfectly on the back of my bike, is very spacious inside. Fits 2 large panniers inside, 1 in porch, 1 in living area. Sadly the inner is just too darn tight a fit. The attachment hooks can't take the strain. After just 2 days of use the hook in the bottom left corner at the front gave way bending out straight. I had to improvise there on after with string. Unfortunately I have no way of returning this tent as when I was cutting up the string (rather carelessly & hurriedly, my pen knife slipped and cut a hole straight through the outer. (have you finished laughing? I'll carry on) Thankfully the repair kit supplied was enough to rectify this. Next downside is the condensation build up, the inside of the outer sheet was soaking in a morning, I'd say the one air vent supplied isn't adequate. Took til midday to dry out before I could pack up and be on my way to the next stop. Generally I would say this kind of performance would be acceptable if you were paying around £40-£50, but this tent retails at £150! This was my first ever 1-man purchase and thought I'd really done my homework before purchasing. Sadly this wasn't the case

Fantastic one man tent for the price. I would change the tent guy lines and tent pegs. Its perfect, lots of room to sit up in if you are standard height. My tent cost me £99 a great price from blacks online. I'm going to try it out in the winter January or February 2010 (I used it in Edale in the summer this year very comfortable ) I think it will handle the bad weather well but I will be bringing along a wild country goretex bivi in case of any extreme failure.
But I'm very pleased with my octane 1 and I like that seedy 80s night club look

I got this tent at a well known on line auction site, much cheaper than the RRP, after my Argos one man was 'stolen' by my son for his fishing trips.
On first inspection it is extremely well made; the seams are well taped well and all the stress points are double reinforced. The stitching is well finished. The fly is excellent material.
One long superior aluminium pole fits easily into the flysheet and the tent is up in no time. I kept the inner attached to the fly and the second time I put it up was even easier.
It is a small tent - I am glad Im not over 6 feet or my feet would have touched the end. The door is the long length of the tent which on a dry day means that it feels spacious as you sit admiring the scenery, but on a wet day the zip needs to be half way down or you get wet. I got all four panniers in the porch.
The first night was very stormy. I was kept dry and the vent seemed to keep the condensation down. The tent did flap but I'd just cycled over Buttertubs from Hawes and after a few pints of Black Sheep in the Farmers Arms I didn't notice. Outside I noticed in the morning that there was half an inch of water surrounding the tent. Not a drop came through the groundsheet.
Cons: One reviewer has said the red Octane tent looks like a seedy nightclub inside.
In the morning when I dressed my arms touched the inner and condensation was transferred onto the inner making it damp.
Overall a very well made lightweight tent which does everything a tent should do but a funny dull red colour. It should have been 6' wider.
Highly recommended for the under 6 feet.
Can you guess where I stayed from the clues?
