2 Reviews of the Blacks Octane 2

By: Romogape  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

I bought this for using when canoe/kayak camping trips.

Obviously the main criteria being a small pack size, light weight, big enough for me and all my gear and decent quality! I'm glad to say that it meets all of them, and some!

It's been used a few times now, and find it quick and easy to erect, good after a day on the water, and stood up to some bad weather too.

Not sure if it's ideal for two with gear, but most tent capacities tend to be optimistic in my opinion, but I'm sure I could cope with it for a night or two.

I got mine in Blacks clearance sale at the end of the season, (paid under £40!),, not sure if I'd pay the £220 they are now, but then again I wouldn't for any tent this size! I've always bought mine at the end of the season, or last year models, and usually get a bargain.

Overall I'd recommend this, if you're in the market for a decent quality, small, lightweight tent.

I'm surprised that this tent is not better known and that I'm the first to review on UKCS. I bought the Octane 2 via a well known online auction site for the princely sum of £43 and I have to say I've got myself an absolute bargain.

The tent is low profile, strong, sturdy and has stood up to the most torrential of downpours that mother nature has thrown at it.

Setting up is completed in 15 minutes absolute max, fly first, no problems whatsoever and very easy for 1 person to erect. If you're not concerned about having a SIG this is a tent that you should seriously consider and I would suggest it stands up well against it's better known 'rivals'.

Why haven't I given it 10/10? 3 reasons:

Height in the tent isn't great, at 6ft tall I can sit up but that's about it, not a real problem though.

The second reason is that the porch doesn't have a groundsheet. Fine in nice weather but as we know rain always gets in under the fly and your items in the porch area may get a little damp if you don't rest them on something other than the ground.

The final reason is the RRP - at circa £190 it is on the expensive side and I probably wouldn't have paid that amount for it - then again I wouldn't have paid that for any 2 man tent.

Overall though this is a top quality tent, that deserves a little more exposure to the camping community.
