1 Reviews of the Blacks Tinker

By: Kwacker  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2001   Rating:

This tent was described as streamlined suggesting it was good in wind. It performed poorly in high winds. It was a comfortable single person tent in other conditions. I used an airbed and I could not use this if 2 people were in the tent.

Part of its problem was that it was inadequately guyed. I had a bad experience when it was pitched with the small end into high wind in heavy rain with standard guying. The single main guy at the small end bent the peg in the ground which reduced the tension. This reduced the tension in the roof which allowed both slopes to meet near the ridge and leak. The pressure on the roof forced the roof down. The high walls were also forced in and the roof and top of the walls met causing a leak around the edges of the roof. I spent a miserable night curled into a ball under the main poles.

After that I added another 2 main guys at the small end which improved but did not cure the problem.

On another occasion high winds were hitting the tent from the side. The wind got under the canopy, lifted the tent so the main poles were clear of the ground and the tent collapsed on my friend who was sleeping alone in the tent. In the morning we examined it. All pegs were in place and all guy sliders were locked. Despite this the tent had lifted enough so the poles fell over.

If you look at the black and white photos you can see the depression on the roof caused by the wind striking it. On the second photo you can see how the roof panel is being drawn up by the wind flowing over the roof.

It was one of those tents that seemed to promise more than it delivered. I put up with it for 3 years and then graduated to the Artic Guinea also shown on the photos
